Sony’s October 2020 change was not a PS4 firmware update that erased game libraries. It was a redesign of the PlayStation Store and Game Library on the web and in the mobile app, timed around the PS5 launch. The new experience centered on PS4 and PS5 content, removed the wishlist, and stopped browser and mobile purchases of PS3, PSP and PS Vita games and add-ons. Previously purchased content and existing PlayStation Plus entitlements were not automatically deleted.
What Sony changed in October 2020
Sony reorganized the desktop PlayStation Store, its mobile-store experience and the Game Library page. The company described the redesign as a more unified experience for PS4 and PS5, while the rollout was reported in phases: Sony’s support notice used October 19, 2020, for the legacy-purchase restriction; desktop changes were reported during October 21–26; and the redesigned PlayStation App was scheduled for October 28.
- Web and mobile stores no longer offered purchases of PS3, PSP or PS Vita games and add-ons.
- PS4 apps, themes and avatars were also removed from the web and mobile storefronts.
- The wishlist was discontinued, and existing wishlist items were deleted.
- PlayStation Messages was integrated into the newer PlayStation App.
- The Game Library and navigation placed greater emphasis on recently played, PS4 and PS5 content.
Sony’s official notice lists the affected categories and the continuing access policy: PlayStation Store important notice.
Was this actually a PS4 system update?
No. The controversy concerned the web and mobile versions of the PlayStation Store, not a conventional PS4 console-firmware update. PS4 owners could still use their console libraries. The largest practical change fell on people who used a browser or phone to find and buy older-platform content.

What users could still do
| Function | After the redesign |
|---|---|
| Buy PS3, PSP or Vita games on the web or mobile app | Removed from those storefronts beginning with Sony’s October 19 date |
| Buy legacy content on the relevant console | Still available at the time, subject to title, region and licensing |
| Redownload an existing purchase | Existing purchases remained accessible through supported devices |
| Use previously claimed PlayStation Plus content | Not affected by this specific change, although entitlement still depends on the subscription and platform |
| Use the wishlist | Discontinued; saved items were removed |
| Use the redesigned PS4/PS5-focused web and mobile store | Available, with the new navigation and library organization |
Removing a buying route was therefore different from removing ownership access. A game could remain in an account’s purchase history even after its listing disappeared from the browser store. Availability could still vary by country, platform, licensing status and publisher delisting.

Why the backlash was so strong
Legacy purchases became less convenient
Owners of older hardware could no longer browse and purchase PS3, PSP or Vita content from a computer or phone. They had to use the relevant console’s storefront, which many users considered slower and harder to search. The restriction also affected add-ons, making it especially troublesome to locate downloadable content for games people already owned.
The wishlist disappeared
The wishlist change was a concrete loss rather than a cosmetic redesign. Players who used it to track rare, older or discounted games lost their saved list when Sony removed the feature.

Older purchases were harder to discover
Reports described a library that foregrounded recent activity, current-generation games and subscription content. A PS4 owner searching for a PS3 purchase, PSP title or Vita DLC could encounter a less complete and less intuitive view than before. The original contemporary report documented these complaints, but it did not establish a measured percentage of affected users: Tech Times’ October 14, 2020 report.
Preservation concerns were exposed
The change highlighted several different risks that are often incorrectly collapsed into “Sony deleted the games”: losing a convenient purchase route, losing a storefront listing, and losing access to an existing purchase are separate outcomes. Digital libraries may remain tied to account, device, licensing and service support even when a title is no longer easy to find.

The PS5 timing shaped interpretation
The redesign arrived weeks before the PS5 launch and was built around PS4/PS5 integration. Some fans therefore saw it as evidence that Sony was pushing legacy platforms aside. That is a user interpretation of the timing, not a documented statement that Sony intended to punish older-console owners. Sony’s public explanation emphasized the redesigned experience and PS4/PS5 integration; its app announcement is available at PlayStation Blog.
Important distinctions for PS4 and legacy owners
- PS4 access: The redesign changed discovery and navigation, but it did not by itself remove a PS4 owner’s purchased games.
- Legacy buying: New PS3, PSP and Vita purchases disappeared from web and mobile stores, while console storefront purchasing continued at that time.
- Owned content: Sony said previously purchased games and add-ons remained accessible through the relevant devices.
- DLC: A base game purchase did not guarantee that its add-ons would remain easy to locate or available in every region.
- Compatibility: Buying a PS3, PSP or Vita title did not automatically make it playable on PS4 or PS5.
- Wishlist tracking: A title saved only to the wishlist was not a purchase and was lost when Sony removed the feature.
What happened to the PS3, PSP and Vita stores later?
The October 2020 web/mobile restrictions were not the same event as a shutdown of the PS3 or Vita console stores. In 2021, Sony proposed closing those console storefronts, then reversed that decision after user criticism. On April 19, 2021, Sony said PS3 and PS Vita stores would continue operating, while PSP commerce would retire on July 2, 2021: Sony’s announcement.

That reversal matters because it shows the two issues had different outcomes: browser and mobile purchasing remained restricted, but Sony did not proceed with the proposed PS3 and Vita console-store closure. Sony’s current support wording continues to distinguish legacy purchases from web/mobile buying: PlayStation support notice.
