BuildTheEarth’s New York City team is recreating parts of the city at approximately one Minecraft block per real-world metre. MineFact’s January 2026 progress report claimed more than 50,000 buildings, while the most developed areas are concentrated in Lower Manhattan. It is a public, volunteer-built project, not an official Mojang or Microsoft map, and it is not a finished digital copy of all five boroughs.
The original 2022 report’s figure of 2,731 participants remains useful as a historical snapshot, but it should not be presented as today’s membership total.
What the original claim got right—and wrong
The New York build is part of BuildTheEarth, a community project launched by YouTuber PippenFTS in 2020 to recreate the planet inside Minecraft. The New York regional team is led by MineFact, also known as the creator behind MineFact/MineFact Network.
A March 14, 2022 report said 2,731 people were working on the New York project. That number is historical. The official BTE NYC team page currently lists 3,719 members, while a June 2026 BuildTheEarth Patreon post describes more than 7,530 users. Those figures likely count different populations—such as team members, community users or other participants—so they cannot be combined into a single workforce total.

#1 Best Overall
The 2022 story was broadly right that a large collaborative build existed. It is wrong to treat its participant count, or its implication that New York is finished, as current.
What “1:1 scale” means in Minecraft
Here, 1:1 means an intended horizontal scale of roughly one Minecraft block for one metre in the real world. That makes coastlines, streets, blocks and building footprints geographically recognizable. It does not mean that every window, room, road marking, utility line or interior is reproduced exactly.
BuildTheEarth says it uses a modified Air-ocean map projection to limit distortion and preserve scale more effectively than a simple equirectangular projection. Projection choices, source-data quality, Minecraft’s block geometry and manual interpretation can still introduce inaccuracies. Building height, terrain resolution, architectural detail and interior coverage vary from place to place.
How the city is built
1. Geographic data establishes the world
Terrain, coastlines, roads and building footprints provide a generated base. BuildTheEarth says its technology and geographic data create real-world terrain before teams add detailed structures.

2. Automated generation expands coverage
Procedural tools make it possible to lay out enormous areas quickly, but generated buildings may be generic or inaccurate. A geographically present block can therefore remain a placeholder rather than a finished building.
3. Volunteers refine the result
Human builders replace or improve generated structures, reconstruct prominent landmarks and work through assigned plots. Review and rebuilding are especially important for recognizable or technically difficult areas.
The original 2022 account said MineFact developed a map-data system, first testing the approach on Frankfurt before focusing on New York. Public sources establish the broad data-assisted workflow, but not a complete current specification for every dataset, importer or building-production tool.
Who is behind BTE NYC?
- PippenFTS: Founder of the wider BuildTheEarth initiative.
- MineFact: Prominent creator and leader associated with the New York team.
- BTE NYC: The regional group responsible for New York’s map and building work.
- Volunteer builders: Contributors who construct and refine individual plots, facades and landmarks.
- BuildTheEarth administration: The wider organization coordinating regional teams and infrastructure.
BuildTheEarth says thousands of builders participate across teams around the world. The project is community-run and has no stated deadline for finishing individual places.
How large is the current build?
| Measure | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Original NYC participation claim | 2,731 people | Historical figure reported on March 14, 2022; not a current count. Tech Times |
| Official BTE NYC team page | 3,719 members | Page-listed membership figure; “members” does not necessarily mean active builders. BTE NYC |
| June 2026 Patreon description | More than 7,530 users | Broader user/community figure whose measurement is not directly comparable with the team-page total. BuildTheEarth Patreon |
| Buildings reported in January 2026 | More than 50,000 | Project-reported figure from MineFact’s five-year video, also reported by Tom’s Hardware; not an independently audited census. |
| Geographic coverage reported in January 2026 | Nearly 700 square kilometres (about 270 square miles) | Reported coverage, not a claim that every location is equally detailed or complete. Tom’s Hardware |
Which parts of New York are developed?
Showcase and progress reports place the strongest concentration in Lower Manhattan. Reported or featured areas include:
- World Trade Center district
- Tribeca and the Civic Center
- Two Bridges
- Little Italy, Chinatown and the Seaport district
- SoHo, NoHo, Nolita and the Bowery
- Battery Park City and Liberty Island
- Parts of Queens and Brooklyn
January 2026 coverage described progress elsewhere in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, while the Bronx and Staten Island had not received comparable development. “Covered” can mean that terrain or a generated shell exists; it does not guarantee finished facades, interiors or fully modeled infrastructure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to visit the Minecraft New York server
The official team page currently lists the Java server as nyc.buildtheearth.net and Minecraft version 1.21.10. MineFact’s January 2026 video description also lists the Bedrock address bedrock.buildtheearth.net. Server addresses and supported versions can change, so check the official NYC page immediately before connecting.
- Own a compatible Minecraft edition and sign in to your Microsoft account.
- Use the edition and version currently supported by the project.
- Open Minecraft’s multiplayer menu and choose Add Server.
- Enter the current Java or Bedrock address listed by BTE NYC.
- Join the server and select the NYC destination or hub option.
- Allow for loading delays, unfinished districts, queues, maintenance and performance problems in dense areas.
A server visit is a live community experience. It is not proof that the entire city is available as an offline world.

Can you download the map?
MineFact’s January 2026 video description advertises Java and Bedrock downloads. The links point toward Patreon-based access, and the June 2026 Patreon post describes monthly download packages that can include world folders and schematic files.
- Do not assume the files are free.
- Do not assume a package contains every completed part of the city.
- Check the current tier, package contents, file size, edition compatibility and required version before paying.
- Expect a snapshot to differ from the live server and to require substantial storage and memory.
Patreon access is optional project support and download access; casual visitors can use the public server instead. Current pricing and exact package contents should be checked on BuildTheEarth’s Patreon.
How to help build New York
The BTE NYC page includes an Apply option. Applicants may also need to join the project’s Discord communities, follow team standards and complete starter assignments.
- You may receive a shell, facade, landmark or assigned plot rather than choosing any location freely.
- Teams can require review or approval before work is merged into the public map.
- Private interiors, sensitive facilities and some buildings may be restricted.
- Advanced building skills are not necessarily required; regional teams can provide guidance.
- The project is volunteer-based and has no published completion deadline.
What this project is not
- It is not an official Mojang, Microsoft or New York City government release.
- It is not a finished, equally detailed recreation of all five boroughs.
- It is not an exact architectural or interior replica simply because its geographic scale is 1:1.
- It is not necessarily a free offline download.
- It is not one of the unrelated “New York City” maps sold or shared elsewhere for Minecraft.
The strongest description is a large, publicly visitable and actively developing 1:1-scale recreation of parts of New York City within BuildTheEarth. Its scale makes the geography compelling; its volunteer workflow means completion and detail remain uneven.
