Wild Rift: Fix Network Lag and High Ping on Android and iOS

Use Wild Rift's Connection Test and a controlled Wi‑Fi versus cellular comparison to find whether high ping comes from your router, carrier, ISP route, device, or Riot's match server.

If League of Legends: Wild Rift feels delayed, first run the game’s Connection Test, then compare the same match conditions on Wi‑Fi and cellular data. That identifies whether the delay comes from your phone, router, ISP or carrier, network filtering, or Riot’s match-server route. Riot publishes 180 ms or lower as a maximum recommended latency, but lower and stable ping is better for competitive play; 180 ms is not a guarantee of smooth matches. Riot’s latency guidance also notes that physical distance from its servers can keep latency high even with a fast broadband plan.

Check whether it is network lag or FPS lag

High ping is long round-trip time to the match server. Jitter is ping that repeatedly jumps, producing delayed commands or rubber-banding. Packet loss means data fails to arrive and can cause freezes, warnings, or disconnects.

FPS lag is different: the phone cannot render frames smoothly. Heat can trigger thermal throttling after a long session. Check the in-game ping indicator and Connection Test before lowering graphics settings; graphics changes can improve FPS but cannot shorten the network route.

Run Wild Rift’s Connection Test first

  1. From the main menu, tap the gear icon.
  2. Tap Connection Test.
  3. Tap Start Diagnosis.

You can also open the test during a match from the gear icon beside the minimap. Menu wording and colors can vary slightly by language and game version. Riot’s tool diagnoses likely causes; it does not repair the connection. See the Connection Test documentation.

Modem/router delay Weak signal, interference, distance, or an overloaded router Move closer, restart the router, try another band, and reduce congestion
Regional broadband or ISP delay Slow ISP or carrier routing Compare another network or location and contact the provider
Match-server delay Server distance, routing, a regional path, or a Riot-side incident Repeat the test, compare with other players, and send Riot the evidence
Green results but poor gameplay FPS drops, heat, storage pressure, or intermittent loss Check frame rate, temperature, background apps, and repeat the test during the problem

Use a controlled Wi‑Fi versus cellular test

  1. Play a short practice or normal match on the current Wi‑Fi and note ping and spikes.
  2. Switch to cellular data and repeat under similar conditions.
  3. If possible, test a different Wi‑Fi network.
  • Bad only on home Wi‑Fi: investigate the router, interference, congestion, DNS, or ISP.
  • Bad only on cellular: investigate signal strength, carrier congestion, handoffs, and carrier routing.
  • Bad everywhere: consider Riot’s route or servers, region/account issues, device software, or misidentified FPS lag.
  • Normal ping with stutter: focus on frame rate, heat, storage, and device performance.

Riot recommends switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data in its mobile connection guide.

Fix Wi‑Fi problems

  • Move nearer to the router and test at another time of day.
  • Try both bands when available: 5 GHz can be faster and less congested at short range, while 2.4 GHz travels farther. A weak 5 GHz signal can be worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection.
  • Restart the modem and router.
  • Pause video streams, large downloads, cloud backups, and console or PC updates; disconnect idle devices temporarily.
  • Install router firmware updates.
  • Avoid public, hotel, school, or overloaded shared Wi‑Fi when possible.

Apple gives similar advice on range, alternate frequencies, router restarts, and firmware in its Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guide.

Fix cellular-data problems

  • Move to a location with a stronger, steadier signal.
  • Check that Wild Rift is allowed to use cellular data.
  • Compare LTE and 5G where your phone permits network-mode selection.
  • Test at different times; tower congestion and traffic-management policies can be time-dependent.
  • Temporarily disable battery-saving modes that restrict networking or performance.
  • Do not equate high download speed with low game latency.

Google’s Android connectivity guidance also recommends restarting, switching networks, and moving closer to the router where relevant.

Disable VPNs and network filters while testing

Temporarily turn off VPNs, gaming VPNs, ad blockers that install a local VPN, DNS filters, firewall/security apps, iCloud Private Relay, and school or enterprise profiles. A VPN adds a server hop and can increase ping or packet loss, although a particular route can occasionally be better. Riot has documented cross-region VPN problems and their effect on Wild Rift connectivity in its VPN-region announcement. Do not treat a paid VPN or “ping booster” as a universal fix.

Try DNS only for connection-establishment problems

Riot documents Google Public DNS in its mobile guide. It may help failed lookups or login/connectivity establishment when an ISP resolver is malfunctioning. It normally cannot fix server distance, Wi‑Fi congestion, packet loss, radio interference, or poor ISP peering.

Android 9 and later

  1. Open Settings and find Network & internet (the name varies).
  2. Open Private DNS, choose Private DNS provider hostname, enter dns.google, and save.
  3. Retest Wild Rift.

Older Android Wi‑Fi settings

Where manual DNS is supported, use primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4.

iPhone and iPad-specific checks

  1. Update iOS/iPadOS and Wild Rift, close background apps, and restart.
  2. Use Settings → Cellular to confirm Wild Rift may use mobile data.
  3. Temporarily disable VPN, Private Relay, and filtering profiles.
  4. Free storage, then test another Wi‑Fi network and cellular data.
  5. Reinstall only after verifying Riot account access.

Riot’s Apple troubleshooting guide recommends these checks.

Reset network settings only after simpler tests

This does not erase personal files, but it removes saved Wi‑Fi passwords, paired Bluetooth devices, VPN profiles, APN or cellular customizations, and related preferences.

  • iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
  • Android: usually Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth; some phones call it Reset network settings.

Apple documents these consequences in its Wi‑Fi guide.

When the phone cannot fix the problem

If ping remains high on unrelated Wi‑Fi and cellular networks, or the Connection Test repeatedly flags match-server delay, the likely causes include regional routing, server geography, a carrier/ISP path shared upstream, an account or region issue, or a Riot-side incident. A fast internet plan does not remove physical distance or poor peering. Check whether friends in the same region are affected and test from another location before escalating.

What to send Riot Support or your ISP

  • Riot ID and region
  • Phone model, OS version, and Wild Rift version
  • ISP or mobile carrier and approximate location
  • Wi‑Fi versus cellular ping results
  • Date, time, and whether the issue affects the lobby, loading screen, or matches
  • Connection Test screenshots
  • Whether VPN, Private Relay, ad blockers, or custom DNS were enabled
  • Whether other online games are affected

Riot’s latency guidance asks for diagnostic context such as test results, ISP, approximate location, and current ping.

What not to do

  • Do not use a nearby speed test as proof that the route to Riot is healthy.
  • Do not repeatedly change DNS expecting it to repair packet loss or server distance.
  • Do not use a VPN without measuring ping and stability before and after.
  • Do not reset network settings before recording passwords and custom configurations.
  • Do not reinstall before confirming account access.
  • Do not lower graphics settings when the ping indicator is normal and the symptoms are frame-rate stutter.
