On a Windows-based ASUS ROG Ally, change the shared graphics-memory allocation in Armoury Crate SE: open Settings → Operating Mode (or Performance) → GPU Settings, choose Auto, 6GB, or 8GB, then restart. Start with Auto; on the original 16GB Ally, test 6GB first when a game reports insufficient VRAM.
Before changing the setting
The ROG Ally does not contain upgradeable, dedicated VRAM. Its AMD Z1 or Z1 Extreme integrated GPU uses unified memory architecture (UMA), sharing the Ally’s physical system RAM with Windows and the CPU. The setting reserves or presents part of that shared pool as graphics memory; it does not add RAM or increase the GPU’s compute power. See ASUS’s explanation at ASUS ROG and AMD’s UMA guidance at AMD Support.
Menu names and available values vary by model, firmware, and Armoury Crate SE version. The original 16GB Ally is the main case covered here. Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally models have different memory configurations or labels, so use the options shown on your device.
Increase the allocation in four steps
-
Open Armoury Crate SE
Press the Ally’s dedicated Armoury Crate button, or launch Armoury Crate SE from Windows. Close games and save work because the change requires a restart.

Open GPU Settings
On the original Ally, select Settings → Operating Mode → GPU Settings. On newer ASUS handheld interfaces, the middle menu may be called Performance: Settings → Performance → GPU Settings. ASUS documents both layouts at its support FAQ and its performance guide.

Choose Memory Assigned to GPU
Find Memory Assigned to GPU, Graphic Memory, or the equivalent dropdown. Choose one of these values:

- Auto: the best starting point for general gaming because the system manages the shared pool.
- 6GB: a useful first fixed-value test on many 16GB models; ASUS describes it as a possible balance between graphics and system memory.
- 8GB: the maximum listed in ASUS’s current Ally support FAQ, useful when a particular title needs a larger reported graphics-memory allocation.
An older ASUS guide used 4GB as a default example, but defaults and choices can differ by model and software. Treat the value displayed on your Ally as authoritative.

Restart and retest
Restart Windows fully; sleep or hibernation is not enough. Launch the affected game after reboot and check its VRAM warning, hardware check, textures, stutter, and stability. Keep the resolution, graphics preset, power mode, and test scene consistent, changing one allocation at a time. ASUS specifies the restart requirement at its support FAQ.

Which allocation should you use?
| Situation | First test | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General gaming | Auto | Preserves flexibility in the shared memory pool. |
| VRAM warning on an original 16GB Ally | 6GB | Tests a larger graphics allocation without reserving half the system memory. |
| A game explicitly requires more reported VRAM | 8GB | ASUS lists 8GB as the maximum available choice in its current FAQ. |
| Windows becomes sluggish | Auto or a lower value | Returns memory to Windows, launchers, and CPU-side work. |
| Missing or blurry texture streaming | 6GB, then 8GB | Checks whether the title benefits from a larger UMA allocation. |
| No improvement | Restore Auto | The bottleneck may be resolution, settings, drivers, power, or the GPU itself. |
Do not assume 8GB is universally faster. Reserving more memory can leave less for Windows, shader compilation, browsers, and launchers. ASUS’s current guidance presents 6GB as a possible 16GB balance, not a universal benchmark result: ASUS ROG performance guidance.
What changing VRAM can—and cannot—fix
- It can satisfy a game’s VRAM compatibility check, enable texture options, or reduce memory-related texture problems in some titles.
- It can worsen stutter or sluggishness if Windows and the game run short of general-purpose RAM and begin paging to storage.
- It does not increase wattage, clock speed, thermal limits, or GPU compute capability.
- It does not guarantee higher frame rates. For a GPU-limited game, try resolution, texture quality, upscaling, frame generation, or the Ally’s operating mode; ASUS lists FSR, RSR, RIS, and AMD Fluid Motion Frames among its broader tools.
Verify the result
After the reboot, re-open Armoury Crate SE and confirm the selected value remains set. Start the game from a fresh launch and check its own graphics-memory display or hardware test. Windows diagnostic tools may show dedicated and shared GPU memory differently, so do not expect every screen to reproduce the dropdown value identically.

Troubleshooting
The GPU setting is missing
- Restart Armoury Crate SE and Windows.
- Install Armoury Crate SE updates.
- Update BIOS and firmware through MyASUS or the support page for the exact Ally model.
- Update ASUS System Control Interface and AMD graphics components.
- Check Settings → Operating Mode/Performance → GPU Settings again.
ASUS forum support has previously recommended Armoury Crate and BIOS updates for a missing control; see that support thread.
Windows or the game still shows the old value
- Confirm you performed a full restart, not sleep.
- Check Armoury Crate again, then launch the game after the restart.
- If necessary, select Auto, reboot, and reapply the desired value.
The game still reports insufficient VRAM
- Test Auto, reboot, and retest.
- Test 6GB, reboot, then test 8GB only if needed.
- Update the game, AMD driver, BIOS, and Armoury Crate SE.
- Lower resolution or texture quality and close unnecessary launchers and background apps.
- Restore Auto if system memory becomes constrained.
A warning can reflect a game’s compatibility threshold rather than proof that the Ally cannot run it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Ally slows down or the game crashes
Return to Auto or the previous value and restart. Symptoms of an allocation that is too high include Windows sluggishness, longer loading or shader-compilation pauses, new stutter, and low-memory crashes. Some games handle UMA memory poorly, so the highest value is not automatically the most stable.
BIOS fallback (not universal)
Some third-party guides and community reports describe a BIOS option named UMA Frame Buffer Size, usually under an advanced menu. ASUS’s current official instructions use Armoury Crate SE instead. BIOS labels and availability vary by model and firmware, so use this only if the Armoury Crate control is unavailable and consult model-specific documentation. Examples include this third-party guide and community reports. Armoury Crate may also be unavailable on SteamOS or other non-Windows installations.
