Insert the card, then in Gaming Mode open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card and confirm the warning. SteamOS erases the card and formats it as ext4 with casefolding, the normal format for a Steam Deck game library. Back up anything you need first: formatting deletes the card’s existing partitions and files.
What cards work with Steam Deck?
The Deck’s expansion slot supports UHS-I microSD cards in the SD, SDHC and SDXC families, according to Valve’s technical specifications. Steam’s support guidance recommends a UHS-I card rated Class 3 or better (Steam Support).
UHS-I describes the card bus. U3 describes a minimum sequential-write classification of 30 MB/s, while A2 describes application-performance requirements under the SD specification. Neither guarantees a particular game-loading result on the Deck. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but Steam says their higher bus speeds are not supported.
Capacity that makes sense
| Capacity | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 128GB | Lowest-cost expansion | Fills quickly with modern games |
| 256GB | Smaller libraries | Less headroom for large installs |
| 512GB | Most owners | Costs more than entry-level cards |
| 1TB | Large libraries and frequent rotation | Higher purchase cost |
| 2TB | Very large removable libraries | Check authenticity, warranty and value carefully |
Usable capacity will be lower than the number printed on the package because manufacturers use decimal capacity calculations and the filesystem consumes some space.

How much should you pay for speed?
Choose a reputable UHS-I, U3/Class 3-or-better card from an authorized seller. A premium card can provide more consistent transfers, installations and repeated writes than very cheap media, but it will not automatically increase game frame rates. Paying mainly for UHS-II, UHS-III or microSD Express headline speeds is usually poor value in a Deck-only setup because the Deck remains a UHS-I host.
Examples of products that fit the interface include the Samsung PRO Plus 1TB microSDXC, Lexar PLAY UHS-I and SanDisk Extreme UHS-I lines. Their advertised maximum speeds require compatible readers; the Deck cannot deliver those higher-than-UHS-I bus rates. The Lexar PLAY PRO microSD Express is backward-compatible, but its Express-class speeds require an Express host and generally do not justify a large premium for Deck use.

Before you insert and format the card
- Back up photos, ROMs, saves, screenshots and other files. Steam Cloud does not protect every manually copied or non-Steam file.
- Confirm that you have selected the intended card; formatting is destructive.
- Charge the Deck or connect its charger so the process is not interrupted.
- Use the microSD card directly. An SD-size adapter is not inserted into the Deck’s slot.
Install the microSD card
- For a first installation, put the Deck in a safe idle state or power it off.
- Hold the card in the orientation shown by the slot and push it gently into the spring-loaded slot on the Deck’s bottom edge.
- Continue until it clicks into place, then release it. If it does not seat naturally, remove it and check the orientation instead of forcing it.
Format the card in Gaming Mode
- Enter Gaming Mode and press the Steam button.
- Choose Settings, then System.
- Select Format SD Card.
- Read the warning and confirm only if the card contains no data you need.
- Wait several minutes for SteamOS to finish.
This is Valve’s standard path in the current SteamOS interface (Steam Support). Labels can move slightly between SteamOS releases. Formatting removes existing partitions and files, creates ext4 with casefolding, and does not copy existing games or increase the card’s advertised capacity.
Use the card for game storage
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Confirm that the microSD card appears as a storage location.
- When installing a game, choose the card as the destination.
- Use the Storage screen to move installed games between internal storage and the card where Steam offers that option.
If the card is missing immediately after formatting, restart Steam or reboot the Deck before trying advanced recovery.

If the Deck does not detect the card
- Remove and reseat it carefully.
- Reboot the Deck.
- Check Steam > Settings > Storage again.
- Open Desktop Mode through Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop and see whether Linux detects or mounts the card.
- Test it in a known-good reader or another device.
- Verify the seller and card capacity. If several devices fail to recognize it, treat the card as defective or counterfeit rather than repeatedly formatting it.
A card visible in Desktop Mode is not necessarily configured as a Steam library. An incompatible filesystem, unusual partition layout, mount-point problem or a Steam restart can keep it out of Gaming Mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If formatting fails or the button is unavailable
Retry after a reboot and reseat the card first. Failure can result from damaged partition metadata, write protection, a failing or counterfeit card, a layout left by boot media, or a temporary SteamOS state.

Advanced Desktop Mode fallback
Only after backing up important data, switch to Desktop Mode and inspect the card with KDE Partition Manager or the KDE disk utility. Delete partitions only on the microSD card, then create one ext4 partition and return to Gaming Mode. This is a community workaround, not Valve’s primary formatting instruction; anecdotal discussions include cards visible in Desktop Mode but not Gaming Mode and partition-recreation troubleshooting.
KDE may show the internal SSD, USB drives and the microSD card together. Verify the removable device’s capacity and identity before deleting anything. Avoid untested terminal commands such as wipefs or mkfs.ext4; a wrong device path can erase the operating system or personal files.

If a previously working card suddenly asks to be formatted
- Do not immediately accept the format prompt.
- Reboot and check whether the card returns.
- Try Desktop Mode and see whether it mounts.
- If the data matters, stop writing to the card and attempt a backup from another Linux-capable computer.
- Replace the card if the problem repeats.
Individual users have reported unexpected reformat prompts after updates, but anecdotal reports do not establish a universal SteamOS defect (community report).
Can Windows or macOS read the card?
A Deck-formatted library uses ext4, so it is not normally plug-and-play in Windows, and macOS does not provide the same native ext4 workflow as Linux. Keep the Steam library card dedicated to the Deck and use a separate exFAT card, USB drive, network transfer or Linux-compatible transfer tool when you regularly move files between systems. Reformatting the library card as exFAT for Windows convenience removes the normal SteamOS library format.
When an internal SSD upgrade is the better answer
An SSD upgrade can provide substantially more storage and better sustained performance, but it requires opening the Deck and introduces installation and potential support risks. It is not a simpler substitute for inserting a microSD card; for straightforward expansion, the properly formatted UHS-I card is the lower-risk route.
