How To Take and Find Hidden Screenshots on Steam Deck

Press Steam + R1 to capture in Gaming Mode, then find the hidden files under Steam's userdata/760/remote folders. This guide covers App IDs, Desktop Mode, transfers, and missing thumbnails.

Press Steam + R1 together in Gaming Mode. Steam should show a notification that the image was saved. On a standard SteamOS installation, the file is usually hidden in /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<SteamID>/760/remote/<AppID>/screenshots/, not in the normal Pictures folder.

Take a screenshot in Gaming Mode

While a game is running, press the Steam button and R1 simultaneously. A Steam notification confirms the capture. This controller shortcut is separate from Steam’s desktop F12 screenshot hotkey, which depends on the Steam Overlay and can be changed in Steam’s in-game settings. See Steam Deck Guide’s shortcut reference and Valve’s Steamworks screenshot documentation.

If nothing happens

  • Confirm that you are in Gaming Mode or running the title through Steam.
  • Check that the Steam Overlay is enabled; Steam’s capture system depends on it.
  • Try the shortcut again after the game has fully loaded.
  • For a non-Steam game, Overlay support and screenshot-manager integration can vary. Use Spectacle in Desktop Mode if the application does not cooperate.

A game’s own photo mode is a separate system. It may write to the game’s installation directory, a Documents folder, a Proton prefix, a cloud-synced folder, or Steam’s capture location if it calls Steam’s screenshot API. Third-party capture tools likewise use their own destinations.

Find the image through Steam first

In Desktop Mode, open Steam’s Recordings & Screenshots or Screenshots area—the exact wording depends on the current client layout. Select the image and choose an option equivalent to Show on Disk, Open Folder, or Open File Location, when available. Valve documents access through the desktop screenshot view, the Steam Overlay, and the uploader after a game closes; newer clients also distinguish local images from images uploaded online. See Valve’s documentation and its client update notes.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

This route avoids guessing the game’s numeric App ID. A screenshot being visible in Steam does not necessarily mean it has been uploaded to the Steam Community or synchronized to another device.

Open the hidden folder manually

Use this method when Steam cannot reveal the location or you want to copy many files.

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode.
  2. Open Dolphin, KDE’s file manager.
  3. Press Ctrl + H to show hidden files. Menu placement can differ between KDE builds.
  4. Browse to /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/userdata/.
  5. Open the numeric folder for the relevant local Steam account, then 760/remote/.
  6. Open the numbered game folder and then its screenshots folder.

The complete default pattern is:

/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<SteamID>/760/remote/<AppID>/screenshots/

Some installations expose the same data through /home/deck/.steam/steam/userdata/<SteamID>/760/remote/. The two layouts can point to the same Steam data through directory links or different installation arrangements. The documented default path is described by Steam Deck Guide.

What each directory means

Part Meaning
deck The default SteamOS user account.
.local A hidden directory; it is invisible until hidden files are enabled.
Steam Steam’s local data directory.
userdata Per-account Steam data.
<SteamID> The local numeric account directory, not the public profile name.
760 Steam’s screenshot-related userdata area.
remote Local screenshot data arranged by application.
<AppID> The game’s numeric Steam application ID, not its title.
screenshots The image files for that application.

If several account or game-number folders exist, use Steam’s manager to identify the title, or sort folders and files by recent modification time. Do not assume the number is recognizable from the game’s name.

View screenshots in Gaming Mode

Gaming Mode can display captures through its media, game overview, or screenshot interface, but labels and locations change with Steam client updates. The dependable way to inspect, rename, organize, or copy the underlying files is Desktop Mode with Dolphin. If a thumbnail is visible but cannot be opened or shared, use the folder path instead of repeatedly retrying the thumbnail.

Make future screenshots easier to find

Steam can keep an additional, convenient copy. In the desktop client, open Steam > Settings > In Game, find the screenshot options, and enable the setting equivalent to save an uncompressed copy or save a copy to a selected folder. Labels vary by client version and language. A practical destination is:

/home/deck/Pictures/Steam Screenshots/

Take one test capture and confirm the actual destination before relying on it. The library copy and the easy-to-browse copy are separate files, so duplicate storage can grow quickly.

Capture the Desktop Mode screen

For a browser, emulator, settings window, or the Linux desktop itself, use KDE’s Spectacle rather than Steam’s game shortcut.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
  1. Switch to Desktop Mode.
  2. Open Discover, browse Utilities, and launch Spectacle (or search for it).
  3. Choose the entire screen, active window, or a selected region.
  4. Configure automatic saving, the destination folder, and shortcuts if needed.

Spectacle commonly saves to Pictures by default, although its destination can be changed. These files do not automatically enter Steam’s screenshot library. For a Steam Community capture, use Steam’s capture system or import the resulting image through a suitable Steam workflow. See Windows Central’s Spectacle guide.

Copy screenshots to another device

Destination or method How to use it Trade-off
USB drive In Desktop Mode, copy from the hidden folder in Dolphin to a USB drive. A USB-C hub or dock may be needed for USB-A hardware. Fast and offline; requires hardware.
microSD card Copy to a card or card reader from Dolphin. Useful for bulk transfers or storage expansion, but unnecessary for an occasional image.
KDE Connect Install KDE Connect on the Deck and phone or computer, pair them on the same network, then send selected files from Dolphin. Convenient and wireless; pairing and local-network access are required.
Cloud storage Upload through a browser or desktop app such as OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. Easy across devices, but large uncompressed collections consume account storage.
SFTP Advanced users can enable SSH and copy over Wi-Fi with SFTP. Good for bulk transfers; never expose SSH to the public internet or use a weak password.

Copy rather than move on the first transfer, verify the destination, and keep the originals until the copies open correctly. A dock can also connect displays and peripherals; Valve’s official dock information is at steamdeck.com/en/dock.

Fix files that exist but do not appear in Steam

Check the ordinary causes

  • Look in remote, not just Pictures.
  • Confirm the correct Steam account number and App ID folder.
  • Check whether the image was made by Spectacle, a game photo mode, or another tool.
  • Verify that Steam Overlay was active when the capture was made.
  • Check that the file is complete and opens in an image viewer.
  • Remember that a local file, Steam’s local library, a Steam Community upload, and cloud synchronization are different things.

Rebuild the screenshot index as a last resort

If the files are present but Steam shows gray, blank, or missing thumbnails, a community-reported workaround is to rebuild the local index. It is not an official Valve repair and is not guaranteed to fix every SteamOS or client bug.

  1. Exit Steam completely.
  2. Back up the 760 folder.
  3. Open /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<SteamID>/760/ (or the equivalent .steam path).
  4. Move these files to a backup location, or delete them only after the backup: screenshots.vdf, screenshots.backup, and screenshots.firstbackup.
  5. Restart Steam and let it re-index the existing images.

Never delete remote. That directory contains the actual screenshots. The workaround and reports of incomplete indexing are discussed by the Steam Community at this troubleshooting thread and this Steam Deck discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a Steam Deck screenshot without entering Desktop Mode?

Yes. In Gaming Mode, press Steam + R1. Desktop Mode is only needed for convenient file browsing, transfers, or desktop captures.

Why are my screenshots not in Pictures?

Gaming Mode captures normally go to Steam’s hidden userdata path under 760/remote. Pictures is commonly Spectacle’s default location or a folder you selected for an additional Steam copy.

Can I use F12 on Steam Deck?

F12 is Steam’s configurable desktop screenshot hotkey and requires the Steam Overlay. Steam + R1 is the practical Gaming Mode shortcut.

Where are screenshots from a non-Steam game?

If Steam Overlay capture works, Steam may organize the image under that application’s data; behavior varies. Otherwise check the game’s own folders or use Spectacle.

Do Steam screenshots automatically sync to another Deck or PC?

Not necessarily. Local files, Steam’s screenshot library, Community uploads, and cloud synchronization are separate. Verify the upload or transfer independently.

How do I send a screenshot to my phone?

KDE Connect is usually the simplest wireless option: pair the Deck and phone on the same network, then send the selected file from Dolphin. Cloud storage is another option.

The Bottom Line

Use Steam + R1 for game captures, then look under /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/userdata/<SteamID>/760/remote/<AppID>/screenshots/. Use Spectacle for Desktop Mode, copy files before moving them, and never delete remote when repairing Steam’s index.
