Yes. The Xbox Series X|S controller—officially called the Xbox Wireless Controller—works with Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. For the quickest, most reliable setup, connect it with a USB-C data cable. Use Bluetooth for cable-free play when your PC supports it, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter when Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable.
Individual games still need controller support, and Xbox Wireless is a different connection method from Bluetooth.
What you need
- Wired: the controller, a USB-C cable that carries data and power, and a free USB port.
- Bluetooth: an up-to-date Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with built-in Bluetooth or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter, plus batteries or a charged battery pack.
- Xbox Wireless: an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, a free USB port, and batteries or a charged battery pack.
Microsoft lists the Xbox Wireless Controller as compatible with Windows PCs through USB and Bluetooth: Xbox Wireless Controller specifications.
Connect the controller with USB-C
USB-C is the best starting point when reliability matters. It does not require Bluetooth hardware, and the same connection is useful for firmware updates and configuration.

- Turn on your PC.
- Plug a data-capable USB-C cable into the controller.
- Plug the other end directly into the PC, avoiding a hub while troubleshooting.
- Press the controller’s Xbox button.
- Wait for Windows to recognize it, then start a controller-compatible game.
The Xbox button should stay illuminated instead of continually flashing. A charge-only cable can power the controller while preventing Windows or Xbox Accessories from communicating with it. Microsoft documents the USB-C connection here: Xbox Wireless Controller with USB-C.
If USB connection fails
- Try another USB port, preferably a port directly on the PC.
- Try a known data cable; not every USB-C cable carries data.
- Restart Windows with the controller connected.
- Open Xbox Accessories to see whether the controller is detected.
Connect by Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the simplest cable-free option if your PC already has working Bluetooth. The controller appears in Windows as Xbox Wireless Controller.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Turn on the controller with the Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds. Release it when the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Wait for Windows to report that it is connected, then test it in a game.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and enable Bluetooth.
- Press the controller’s Xbox button, then hold the Pair button until the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- Choose Add Bluetooth or other device, select Bluetooth, and choose Xbox Wireless Controller.
Microsoft’s general instructions are at How to connect an Xbox controller to a PC. Windows labels can change slightly between releases, but the sequence is always: enable Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller.
If it will not reconnect
- Open the Windows Bluetooth device list.
- Select Xbox Wireless Controller and choose Remove device.
- Turn the controller off and on.
- Put it into pairing mode and add it again.
Also disconnect it from an Xbox console or another device that may be claiming the connection.

Connect with an Xbox Wireless Adapter
An Xbox Wireless Adapter uses Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless protocol; it is not a Bluetooth adapter. It can help when a desktop has no Bluetooth, Bluetooth pairing is unreliable, or you specifically want Xbox Wireless.
- Plug the adapter into the PC.
- Allow Windows to recognize or install it.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button.
- Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until its Xbox button flashes.
- Wait for the adapter and controller lights to stop flashing, then test the controller.
Xbox Support documents the connection and troubleshooting process at Connect an Xbox Wireless Controller to a PC and Troubleshoot the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Current official U.S. retail availability and pricing were not established, so check a current Microsoft or reputable retailer listing before buying.
Update and configure the controller
- Install Xbox Accessories from the Microsoft Store.
- Connect the controller to Windows with a compatible USB-C data cable.
- Open the app and install any offered firmware update.
- Use supported button-mapping and configuration options, then test the controller again.
Microsoft specifically requires a compatible USB-C cable for Windows configuration. Do not assume every firmware or mapping function is available over Bluetooth: Xbox Wireless Controller support.
Check whether Windows sees the controller
Before changing game settings, test Windows itself:

If the controller works in this panel, pairing is probably complete. A game, launcher, Steam Input profile, or remapping utility is then the more likely cause.
Make it work in Steam, Xbox PC games, and other launchers
Steam
Most Steam games support Xbox/XInput controllers directly. In Steam’s controller settings, verify that the controller appears. For a game that does not respond, try enabling or disabling Steam Input for that game, then restart it. Avoid running multiple input translators at once. Steam’s update guidance is available at Steam Controller troubleshooting.
Xbox app and PC Game Pass
Xbox controllers usually present naturally in Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem, but controller support remains game-specific. If a title does not respond, verify it in joy.cpl, update firmware over USB-C, close Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, or similar tools, and restart the Xbox app and game.
Epic, Ubisoft, Battle.net, and other launchers
The launcher does not guarantee controller support; the game must support Xbox/XInput input. Test in joy.cpl, try USB-C, close competing remappers, and check the game’s input settings. Adding a non-Steam game to Steam can provide Steam Input as a workaround, but it does not work for every title.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The Xbox button flashes but never connects
- Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth devices.
- Power-cycle the controller and restart Bluetooth or Windows.
- Pair again within range of the PC.
- Try USB-C to confirm that the controller itself works.
Windows says “Try connecting your device again”
Remove the old pairing, turn Bluetooth off and on, restart Windows, reduce nearby interference, and pair again. If it still fails, use USB-C and update the controller through Xbox Accessories. A Microsoft Q&A example describes USB-C as a fallback, but community reports are anecdotal: Microsoft Q&A.
Windows detects it, but the game does not
- Close the game.
- Connect by USB-C.
- Close other remapping tools.
- Confirm operation in
joy.cpl. - Relaunch the game and adjust Steam Input or the game’s controller option only if needed.
Xbox Accessories cannot find it
Use another known data-capable cable and USB port, connect directly rather than through a hub, restart Windows, close the game, update Windows, and repair or reinstall the app. Power alone is not enough; the cable must carry data.
Inputs work but prompts are wrong
Steam Input, a remapping utility, or the game’s own prompt support may be changing the displayed layout. Disable unnecessary remappers, try the game’s native controller mode, toggle Steam Input, and restart the game.
Headset or microphone behavior differs
Audio behavior can vary by USB, Bluetooth, Xbox Wireless, the game, and Windows’ selected audio device. Test playback and microphone input separately in Windows sound settings rather than assuming every connection method exposes identical headset features.

Which connection should you use?
| Method | Best for | Advantages | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-C | Reliability and troubleshooting | Simple setup, no Bluetooth required, useful for firmware | Needs a cable; charge-only cables fail to provide data |
| Bluetooth | Convenient wireless play | No dedicated Xbox adapter when the PC already has Bluetooth | Requires Bluetooth hardware; pairing and interference problems are possible |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter | No Bluetooth or persistent Bluetooth failures | Dedicated Xbox Wireless connection | Separate hardware; current availability and price require verification |
Use USB-C first when you need a dependable baseline. Choose Bluetooth for ordinary cable-free play. Consider the Xbox Wireless Adapter only when Bluetooth is unavailable or consistently troublesome.
