Start by updating the game, verifying its files, and updating your graphics driver; then test with overlays off and lighter graphics settings. If crashes persist, try the Steam-only DirectX 11 workaround below or compare another official PC version.
First, identify when the crash happens

Players have reported Steam, DirectX 12, loading screens, cutscenes, overlays, driver timeouts, and high frame rates in connection with crashes. Those are community reports, not confirmed causes. The official site lists Version 2.0 notes dated July 24, 2026, and subsequent updates, which show continued maintenance but do not establish that every crash has been fixed: official Where Winds Meet site.
Try these fixes in order
- Update the game. Close the game and its launcher, reopen the launcher you use, install pending updates, then restart Windows.
- Verify or repair the installation. Use your storefront’s verification tool or the launcher’s repair option if one is available.
- Update the graphics driver. Install a stable driver for your GPU and restart Windows. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable version instead.
- Disable overclocks and overlays. Temporarily return GPU settings to default and turn off overlays and monitoring or injection tools.
- Reduce graphics load. Cap the frame rate, lower demanding settings, and disable frame generation or ray tracing if enabled.
- On Steam, test
-dx11. Treat it as a reversible community workaround, not an official permanent fix. - Compare another official PC distribution only if the crash seems limited to one launcher.
- Reinstall only after these tests. If repair or verification fails, reinstall the launcher or game from its official source.
- If the whole PC freezes or reboots, inspect Windows and hardware stability rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
- Contact official support if a reproducible crash remains after these steps.
Check the PC requirements for your launcher
Storefronts display different requirements, so do not treat one listing as universal. Steam’s current listing gives the more conservative baseline for its build: Windows 10/11 64-bit, an Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 480 8 GB, DirectX 12, and 130 GB minimum storage. Steam lists 32 GB RAM and 200 GB storage as recommended, and recommends an SSD. See Steam’s technical-support and requirements page.
Epic’s listing instead shows 8 GB RAM, GTX 750 Ti, RX 550, or Arc A380, DirectX 11, and 100 GB storage among its minimums. That is a material difference, not evidence that either list applies to every launcher: Epic’s Where Winds Meet listing. A minimum specification is not a promise of stable play at high settings; on a 16 GB system, close unneeded applications before testing.

Verify or repair game files
Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Where Winds Meet and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Let verification finish, restart Steam, and try launching again.
Epic Games Store
In your Epic library, open the game’s options and choose Verify. Launcher labels can change, so use Epic’s current in-app options rather than relying on an outdated menu path.
Official launcher
If the official launcher offers Repair, Check, or Scan files, run that before downloading the full game again. The exact control may differ by launcher version. Some players have reported that client repair and missing-file downloads helped startup or loading crashes, but this is not a guaranteed or officially confirmed fix.
Try DirectX 11 if the Steam build crashes
Steam lists DirectX 12, while Epic displays DirectX 11 in its minimum requirements. Some players report that forcing DirectX 11 bypassed particular loading, region, or driver-timeout crashes, but NetEase has not established it as a universal fix. It may change performance or available graphics features.

- In Steam, open Library, right-click Where Winds Meet, and choose Properties.
- Enter
-dx11in Launch Options. - Close the window and launch the game to test.
To undo the test, return to Properties and remove -dx11. If the game will not launch with the option, remove it and try the default renderer. Do not add this launch option to another distribution unless that launcher supports it.
Lower graphics load and remove background hooks
Use a temporary, easy-to-reverse configuration so you can tell whether load or a background tool changes the behavior:
- Set a frame-rate cap appropriate for testing, such as 60 FPS.
- Disable frame generation if enabled; lower textures if VRAM use is high, and reduce shadows, effects, or view distance.
- Turn off ray tracing if available and try borderless windowed mode if exclusive fullscreen is unstable.
- Restart the game after changing major graphics options.
- Close unnecessary applications, especially on a system with 16 GB RAM.
Disable likely overlays and hooks one at a time: Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, capture or RGB utilities, and reshade or injector tools. Test, then re-enable tools individually if the game is stable; that helps identify whether one is involved. Official patch notes acknowledge that background software can interfere with in-game shortcuts, but that does not prove such software causes crashes. Do not use cheats, unauthorized tools, or modifications; the official site warns that abnormal tools or behavior can lead to restrictions or bans.

Check drivers, storage, and launcher behavior
Graphics drivers and tuning
After updating the GPU driver and restarting, test with default driver settings. Temporarily disable GPU overclocking or undervolting. If a crash started after installing a new driver, comparing with the prior stable driver can help isolate the change. Community reports mention drivers and runtime components, but they do not establish a particular missing-runtime cause. Avoid downloading DLLs from unofficial sites.
Installation drive and path
The official launcher guide recommends an SSD and says its installation path should use the system language or English; it warns that other path languages can cause errors. It also recommends trying the game executable directly from the game directory if the launcher does not respond, and reinstalling the launcher if that fails. Direct executable launching is a diagnostic step: account authentication or patching may still depend on launching through the client. See the official PC launcher installation guide.
Keep ample free space beyond the nominal download size, avoid unusually long folder paths, and check that the launcher and game are using the intended drive. The storefront and launcher guidance give different storage figures, so no single amount should be treated as sufficient for every version and update. An SSD is recommended, not a guaranteed crash fix.

If the whole PC locks up or reboots
A crash to desktop points first toward game files, drivers, overlays, renderer, and settings. A black screen with a driver reset, hard lock, or unexpected reboot may involve Windows or hardware stability. Check Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer for errors around the crash time, and look for GPU driver timeouts. Also check CPU and GPU temperatures, RAM stability, power behavior, and whether overclocks or undervolts are enabled. If other demanding games also crash, investigate the system rather than treating this as a Where Winds Meet-only problem.
Compare launchers only as a diagnostic
PC versions are available through Steam, Epic Games Store, and the official launcher. Some users report fewer crashes on a different launcher, but those anecdotes do not prove one distribution is universally more stable. If testing another build, download it only from an official storefront or the official site, confirm that you are using the same NetEase-linked account and that cross-progression is properly linked, and account for the extra disk space. Treat this as a way to isolate a storefront-specific issue, not a guaranteed cure.
Steam and Epic list the game as free-to-play, with in-game purchases; no paid optimizer or crash-fixer utility is needed for these troubleshooting steps. Official listings: Steam and Epic Games Store.

When to contact support
Escalate if crashes persist across launchers after verification and repair, happen at the same quest, region, or cutscene, began immediately after a named update, or occur on hardware that meets or exceeds the recommended specification. Contact support as well if you cannot log in or suspect an account problem. The official news index lists [email protected]; check the index for the current contact route.
Include the launcher and game version, Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, exact trigger and frequency, any error or driver-timeout text, and whether testing DirectX 11, disabling overlays, and removing overclocks changed the result. Attach crash logs, DxDiag, or Event Viewer details if support requests them.
