Heroes of the Storm on Steam Deck is normally the Windows Battle.net client running inside Proton or Wine, not a native Steam build. That means the correct fix depends on where the failure occurs: the launcher, the game’s graphics startup, the compositor, or the Proton prefix. Start with an update and restart, then test one change at a time.
- Update SteamOS and reboot.
- Test another Proton build.
- Reset HotS graphics and disable overlays.
- Use a gamescope workaround for repeatable in-match crashes.
Identify the installation and crash pattern
Your Steam shortcut may start Battle.net, which then launches HotS inside a Proton/Wine prefix. Steam Input, Steam compatibility settings, Battle.net cache, HotS files, Proton files, and Steam’s shader cache are separate layers. A non-Steam shortcut may not offer Steam’s normal “Verify integrity” command, and launch options applied to the shortcut are not necessarily inherited by the game executable launched inside Battle.net.

A March 14, 2026 Blizzard forum report describes access-violation crashes roughly 10–15 minutes into matches and says enabling gamescope stopped them for that user. It is useful pattern evidence, not proof of a universal cause or fix: Blizzard forum report.
1. Update SteamOS and fully restart
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install available updates.
- Choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- Launch HotS before changing other settings.
This update-and-restart sequence is also recommended in Steam Deck performance troubleshooting guidance: Steam Deck troubleshooting steps. Use the stable SteamOS channel while eliminating variables. Valve’s August 7, 2026 news listing identified 3.8.16 as the stable reference and 3.8.25 Beta as a preview build with a documented composition-related issue; check your Deck locally rather than assuming either version is installed. If the crash began after joining Beta or Preview, switch to stable, update, restart, and retest.

2. Test Proton versions systematically
- Highlight the Battle.net or HotS shortcut in your Steam Library.
- Press Menu, then open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Test the current stable Proton build, then Proton Experimental.
- Try Proton Hotfix if Battle.net will not launch or update.
Change one build at a time and completely exit Steam and Battle.net between tests when possible. Record whether the launcher, splash screen, menus, or an actual match fails. Proton-GE can be tested by experienced users who already manage it with a trusted tool such as ProtonUp-Qt, but it is not an official Valve or Blizzard baseline and can introduce regressions. A newer build may fix Battle.net while causing black screens or input problems; another may improve stability at a performance cost.
3. Enable gamescope or correct compositor handling
The cited March 2026 report used Lutris and resolved recurring access violations by enabling gamescope, selecting a valid output resolution, and using fullscreen mode. In Lutris, open the game configuration, enable advanced options, open System options, enable gamescope, choose a valid resolution, and test fullscreen. The report mentioned --force-grab-cursor only for cursor capture on multi-monitor systems; it was not identified as the crash fix.
If Battle.net was installed through Lutris, use Lutris’s gamescope toggle. If it was added directly to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut, there is no single launch command that is safe for every executable and argument layout. Try the launcher’s normal fullscreen mode first and only add a gamescope configuration after confirming which executable Steam starts. This workaround is most relevant when the game is stable in menus but crashes repeatedly after several minutes in a match, especially when docked or using an external display.

4. Reset HotS graphics and reduce rendering load
- In HotS, press F10.
- Open Options > Graphics.
- Select Restore Defaults and restart the game.
- If it still crashes, lower texture quality and screen resolution.
- Retest with overlays and external tuning disabled.

5. Clear Battle.net cache and repair HotS
Use this branch when Battle.net opens but repeatedly prepares or patches data, shows a login-module error, or fails to launch HotS after an update. Blizzard’s crash guidance recommends closing background software, clearing cache, repairing files, updating the operating system, and reinstalling when necessary: Blizzard crash troubleshooting.

- Exit HotS and Battle.net completely, including its background process.
- Clear the Battle.net launcher cache using the cache location for your installation method.
- In Battle.net, open the HotS game menu and choose Scan and Repair, or the equivalent repair option shown by your launcher version.
- Only then consider clearing Steam’s Proton shader cache.
Battle.net cache, HotS data, Proton-prefix files, and Steam shader data are different. Do not use a universal filesystem path: prefixes differ between Steam, Lutris, Bottles, Heroic, and other managers.

For a clean test, run HotS in handheld mode with no dock, external display, Decky Loader plugin, MangoHud or other overlay, TDP/GPU-clock tool, capture utility, ReShade layer, Lutris overlay, or desktop chat overlay. Steam Deck guidance recommends disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode and restarting; Blizzard likewise warns that overlays and background applications can conflict with games: Steam Deck troubleshooting and Blizzard crash guidance.
If the crash stops, re-enable one tool at a time. A failure that returns only while docked points toward external-display resolution, refresh rate, fullscreen mode, or compositor behavior rather than corrupted HotS files.

7. Rebuild the Battle.net and HotS Proton prefix
Use a clean prefix after graphics reset, cache clearing, and compatibility testing fail—especially if you repeatedly changed Proton versions, moved the game executable, have multiple Battle.net prefixes, or Battle.net updates never complete.
- Back up screenshots, custom controller layouts, and any files you need.
- Uninstall HotS from Battle.net.
- Identify the correct Battle.net prefix by its contents, then remove or rename only that prefix.
- Install Battle.net again using one manager and one Proton build.
- Add the newly installed launcher to Steam.
- Install HotS and test before adding launch options, plugins, overlays, or graphics tweaks.
Deleting the wrong prefix can remove other Blizzard games sharing that environment. A fresh prefix removes configuration corruption but cannot fix a current Proton regression, SteamOS problem, or Blizzard-side outage.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing variables when a clean prefix and several Proton builds all fail, SteamOS itself is unstable, or the problem began immediately after a current SteamOS, Proton, Steam, or Battle.net update. Check Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm support hub and technical forums for a matching incident.
