CE-110538-8 means your PS5 could not read the inserted Blu-ray-format disc. Eject and inspect the disc, clean it from the center outward, insert it in the correct orientation, and test several known-good compatible discs. If games, Blu-ray movies, and DVDs all fail, use Safe Mode’s cache/database tools and then arrange Sony service; the code does not by itself identify a failed laser or other specific component.
Start with the non-destructive checks below. Do not factory-reset the console or force a disc out before you have established whether the fault follows one disc or the entire drive.
What CE-110538-8 means
This is a disc-reading failure, not proof that the particular movie or game is defective. Possible causes include a dirty or scratched disc, incorrect insertion, unsupported or badly authored media, a temporary system/database problem, or a fault in the console’s disc-reading mechanism. Sony’s public error guidance does not diagnose a specific laser, spindle motor, cable, or drive-board failure. See Sony’s CE-110538-8 support page.
These instructions apply only to a PS5 that actually has a disc drive: an original disc model, a PS5 Slim with an installed drive, or a PS5 Pro with its optional compatible drive. A PS5 Digital Edition without that add-on cannot read physical discs.

Fixes to try, in order
1. Identify the disc and inspect it
Note whether the failed item is a PS5 or PS4 game, commercial Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, DVD, or recordable disc. Remove it and examine both sides under good light for fingerprints, dust, cracks, deep scratches, clouding, warping, or delamination. A visibly damaged disc should be replaced or tested in another compatible player before you diagnose the console.
2. Clean the disc correctly
- Hold the disc by its outer edge or center hole.
- Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs.
- Wipe in straight strokes from the center hole toward the outer edge.
- Reinsert the disc and test it again.
Do not use paper towels, abrasive materials, household solvents, toothpaste, scraping, or circular polishing motions. Sony’s cleaning guidance is on its PS5 disc-reading troubleshooting page.
3. Reinsert it in the correct orientation
Orientation depends on how the console is positioned. Sony specifies that, when a PS5 is standing vertically on its stand, the disc’s labeled side faces left as you insert it. Do not treat “label side left” as a universal rule for a horizontally positioned console or every model revision. Insert gently; never twist, push against resistance, or repeatedly feed a disc that is not seating normally.
4. Test several known-good discs
Sony recommends trying another game, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD. For a more useful diagnosis, test one known-good PS5 game, one PS4 game disc if available, one commercial Blu-ray movie, and one commercial DVD. Eject and reinsert after each test.

This table is practical troubleshooting guidance, not an official Sony diagnostic chart. Sony’s formal instruction is to try other compatible discs and seek support if the problem continues.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
5. Confirm the media is supported
PS5 optical drives are not universal CD/DVD/Blu-ray readers. The current PS5 documentation lists support for PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD. The manual also says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Check the model manual at Sony’s PS5 documentation.
- Audio CDs are unsupported and are not a valid diagnostic test.
- Burned, unfinalized, or otherwise poorly authored discs may not play.
- Do not use 8 cm discs.
- Movie-region restrictions can matter; do not assume a disc from another region will work.
- A disc made for a different format is not evidence of a defective PS5.
The manual notes that the console’s BD/DVD region code can be changed only a limited number of times. Confirm your console and disc regions before treating a movie-only failure as hardware.
6. Restart and check system software
Perform a normal restart and install any system-software update offered in Settings. Sony’s dedicated procedure focuses on reinserting the disc, testing other media, and then using Safe Mode; it does not identify a particular firmware version as the cause of CE-110538-8.
7. Use Safe Mode’s cache and database tools
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the power button again, releasing it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Start with the cache option if it is offered. If the error remains, return to Safe Mode and choose Rebuild Database.
Safe Mode labels can vary with system software. Read each warning on screen. Rebuilding the database is a software troubleshooting step; it does not prove or repair a particular optical component.
8. Reserve “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” for a final software test
Sony lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) after the other troubleshooting steps. It deletes all information on the console. Back up saved data and other important information first, and use the reset only if you accept that loss. A full reset is unlikely to repair a drive that fails with multiple known-good discs.

How to tell whether the disc or console is at fault
The strongest home test is whether the error follows one disc or remains across supported media. If several clean, known-good games and movies fail—including different disc types—the console or removable drive needs service rather than more cleaning. Repeated clicking, grinding, unsuccessful spin-up, or unreliable insertion/ejection strengthens that conclusion, but none identifies a specific failed component.
If a disc is stuck
Do not pull, pry, shake, or force it. Sony provides a manual-ejection procedure that requires a well-lit workspace, a flat surface with a soft cloth, a #1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver, and the console powered off with cables and accessories removed. After removing the stand/base and the correct disc-drive cover for your model, turn the manual-eject screw clockwise until the disc is almost completely visible, then gently remove it. Do not power on or play the console with the cover removed. The cover and eject steps differ between PS5 revisions, so follow the model-specific instructions on Sony’s disc troubleshooting page.

Should you replace the PS5 disc drive?
Check warranty status and Sony’s repair process before opening the console or buying parts. Original PS5 disc models have an integrated drive, while some Slim models and the PS5 Pro use a removable, model-specific module. A drive intended for a Slim or Pro should not be assumed to fit an original PS5, and “plug-and-play” compatibility is not universal.
Experienced repairers can review Sony’s U.S. parts information at Sony’s parts and accessories page, which references an authorized parts partner. Availability and compatibility depend on the exact model; the page does not establish a universal price. Avoid unverified marketplace modules and do not adjust laser potentiometers, wipe internal optics with alcohol, or replace a laser based only on this code. Those actions can cause damage and complicate warranty service.
When to contact Sony
After cleaning, correct insertion, compatibility checks, multiple-disc testing, and Safe Mode troubleshooting, persistent failure is enough reason to stop home diagnosis. Sony directs users to PlayStation Support or its repair flow when the disc-reading function still fails. Start with the official error page at playstation.com/en-us/support/error-codes/ps5/ce-110538-8. U.S. customers can also use Sony’s repair portal or Sony support contact options. Repair eligibility and cost vary by country, model, warranty status, and diagnosis; Sony does not publish one universal repair price for this error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a dirty Blu-ray cause CE-110538-8?
Yes. Fingerprints, dust, and smudges can prevent reading. Clean from the center toward the edge with a soft, lint-free optical-disc cloth, then test the disc again.
Why does one disc work while another does not?
The failing disc may be scratched, damaged, region-restricted, poorly authored, or unsupported. If several different supported discs fail, suspect the console or drive instead.
Can a PS5 play DVDs?
Supported DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD media are listed in Sony’s documentation, subject to disc condition and region or authoring limits.
Can a PS5 play CDs?
No. Sony states that PS5 consoles cannot play audio CDs, so a CD is not a valid test disc.
Will rebuilding the database delete my games or saves?
Rebuilding the database is the less-destructive Safe Mode option. Read the current on-screen warning; do not confuse it with Reset PS5, which deletes console information.

Does a factory reset fix a failed disc drive?
It can serve as Sony’s final software test, but it deletes all console information and is unlikely to fix a physical drive fault. Back up first.
Can the PS5 Digital Edition read Blu-rays?
Not unless it is a model that supports and has a compatible add-on disc drive installed. A standard Digital Edition has no optical drive.
Should I clean the laser myself?
No. Sony’s consumer guidance does not require opening the drive. Internal cleaning, laser adjustment, or component replacement can damage the console and affect warranty service.
Is a replacement drive interchangeable between PS5 models?
No universal interchangeability is established. Confirm the exact model number and drive compatibility, especially when comparing original, Slim, and Pro systems.
