Start by identifying whether Sea of Thieves fails to launch, hangs on a black screen, closes during play, or makes the whole PC freeze or restart. Check the official Sea of Thieves status page, then use the repair steps for your storefront: Steam file verification is different from Xbox app or Microsoft Store repair. Work through low-risk fixes before reinstalling; a full PC shutdown calls for system-stability checks, not just game repair.
First, identify when the crash happens
- Nothing happens after clicking Play: check Windows, the launcher, account sign-in, and installation integrity.
- Black screen or a close during loading: prioritize Windows updates, graphics drivers, file repair, and launch-specific account or regional settings.
- Crash after joining a session or during play: test overlays and background utilities, restore hardware tuning to default, and check temperatures and system stability.
- The entire PC freezes, reboots, or powers off: investigate hardware, power, temperatures, memory, and Windows logs. This is different from the game simply closing.
- An error names an anti-cheat component, executable, or missing file: first verify or repair the game using its own storefront. Do not download replacement game files from third-party sites.
If the problem began immediately after a game update, check the status page and verify the installation before making extensive changes. A local reinstall will not necessarily fix a game-side issue.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Check service status. Visit Sea of Thieves Game Status for an outage, maintenance window, or incident. If service is disrupted, wait for it to clear rather than reinstalling.
- Restart the PC and update Windows. Press the Windows key, type Check for updates, open Windows Update, install available updates, and restart—even if Windows does not explicitly require it. Rare includes an up-to-date Windows installation among its launch and crash troubleshooting steps.
- Repair the game files. Follow the Steam or Xbox app/Microsoft Store instructions below; do not use one storefront’s procedure for the other.
- Turn off nonessential overlays and monitoring utilities. Disable them for a test, then add them back one at a time if the game becomes stable.
- Update or clean-install the graphics driver. Use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver source. If crashes started right after a driver update, test the previous stable driver instead of assuming the newest one is best.
- Return manually tuned hardware to default. Temporarily remove CPU or GPU overclocks, undervolts, custom memory timings, and aggressive tuning profiles.
Rare’s support articles were last updated June 23, 2023. They are a useful official baseline, but Windows, Steam, and Xbox app menu labels may have changed since then.
Repair the installation for your storefront
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Sea of Thieves and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (called Local Files in some Steam interfaces).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let Steam replace or redownload files it finds damaged.
- Restart Steam and test the game.
Steam file verification is the right first step for a damaged or incomplete Steam installation; it does not repair a driver, an unstable PC, or an Xbox sign-in problem. Steam lists an Xbox Live account as required for the Steam edition, so a failure around its sign-in window may involve authentication rather than game files. See Rare’s Steam launch guidance and Steam’s launch troubleshooting.

Xbox app or Microsoft Store
Open the game’s app-management page in the Xbox app or Windows settings and use the available Verify and repair, Repair, or equivalent option first. Labels and locations vary by app and Windows version. If the game works through the Xbox app but the launcher itself appears damaged, repair the Xbox app or Gaming Services through the app’s available settings before resetting the game.
Use Reset only after less destructive repair options fail: it can remove local app data or settings. Rare’s older Microsoft Store instructions also describe this sequence for a stubborn launch failure:
- Uninstall Sea of Thieves.
- Run
wsresetas administrator to clear the Microsoft Store cache. - Restart the PC.
- Reinstall the game. Rare’s guidance specifically advises installing to the C: drive; that is Rare’s recommendation for this procedure, not a universal Windows requirement.
- In Windows, find Sea of Thieves under Apps and Features or Installed apps, open Advanced options, and use Reset if the option is available and repair has not helped.
Refer to Rare’s Windows launch guidance for its Store-specific steps.

If it crashes during gameplay
Test overlays and background software
Rare recommends disabling overlays as a troubleshooting step. Turn off Steam and Discord overlays, Xbox Game Bar, Nvidia or AMD overlays, and tools such as MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server for a clean test. Also close recording, RGB, monitoring, frame-rate limiting, and unusually demanding background applications. These are practical candidates to test, not confirmed causes of every crash.
Disable one group at a time where practical; if the crash stops, re-enable applications individually to identify a conflict. Do not permanently disable security software without evidence it is blocking the game. If security logs show a block, use the vendor’s guidance or seek platform support rather than weakening protection broadly.
Remove unstable tuning
Return user-applied CPU and GPU clocks, voltage, undervolts, memory timings, and power limits to stock settings. Rare specifically calls out CPU or GPU overclocking and Intel SpeedStep changes made in BIOS. A factory-overclocked graphics card is not automatically a problem; the diagnostic aim is to undo changes you applied. If the game becomes stable at defaults, test system stability before restoring a tuning profile.

Check heat, memory, and storage
Watch CPU and GPU temperatures while playing, check Windows storage warnings and drive health, and run a memory diagnostic if other applications also fail. Rare advises checking RAM, processor and graphics-card stability, overheating, hard-drive operation, and available storage. A crash in several demanding games points toward a broader system issue rather than Sea of Thieves alone.
If the game will not launch or shows a black screen
Test another Windows administrator account
Rare recommends trying a local Windows administrator account for launch failures. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to use an administrator account permanently or to run unknown executables as administrator. If the game launches only in another account, profile permissions, profile corruption, or account-specific Store/Xbox settings may be involved.

- Date and time: right-click the Windows clock, choose Adjust date/time, toggle Set time zone automatically off and on, restart, and test.
- Language and region: Rare’s launch guidance suggests temporarily placing English (United States) first in the language list and setting the region accordingly. If the system is already configured that way, it suggests trying English (United Kingdom). Restore your preferred settings if the change does not help. Labels vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check that the PC meets the published requirements
The Steam listing for Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition publishes the following Windows requirements. They describe the Steam listing, not a guarantee that every PC meeting the minimum will run without crashes.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher | 64-bit Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel i3-4170 at 3.7 GHz or AMD FX-6300 at 3.5 GHz | Intel i7-4790 at 4 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 at 3.6 GHz |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon R9 270 | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX Vega 64, or Intel A750 |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 100 GB available | 100 GB available |
| Other | 64-bit processor and operating system; broadband internet | 64-bit processor and operating system; broadband internet |
Check your Windows version with Windows + R, enter winver, and press Enter. Confirm at least 100 GB is available on the installation drive, and consider whether the drive is nearly full or showing errors. A PC close to the minimum may have little headroom when other demanding programs are running. See the Steam listing and system requirements.

Update or roll back the graphics driver
Rare identifies outdated or corrupted graphics drivers as possible contributors to crashes and recommends driver maintenance. Find your GPU under Task Manager > Performance > GPU or Device Manager > Display adapters, then get drivers from the manufacturer:
If a crash began just after a driver update, rolling back to the previous stable driver is a reasonable diagnostic test. For persistent driver-related problems, use the installer’s clean-install option where available, or a reputable display-driver removal process; restart after removal and again after installation. Test the game before adding overlays or tuning utilities back. Avoid third-party “driver updater” tools when the GPU maker provides its own drivers.
If the whole PC freezes, reboots, or powers off
A game closing to the desktop is an application failure; a full system shutdown or reboot calls for a broader investigation. Rare advises checking PC hardware and the Windows installation when the computer itself shuts down. Check CPU and GPU temperatures, power delivery, GPU power cables and seating, RAM stability, BIOS settings, storage health, and any overclocks or undervolts. If the PC also fails in other demanding games, Sea of Thieves may be exposing instability that exists elsewhere.
Windows Event Viewer may show display-driver, hardware, or Kernel-Power events, but a Kernel-Power entry often records that a shutdown was unexpected; by itself it does not identify the cause. Reliability Monitor, Windows Memory Diagnostic, drive-health checks, and a test in another demanding game can help narrow the issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to reinstall or contact support
Reinstall only after storefront repair or verification fails, the installation remains damaged or stuck, or the problem followed an interrupted update. Before uninstalling, check free space, close the launcher and related processes, and restart after removal. Reinstall through the same storefront unless you have a specific reason to change platforms. Reinstallation will not fix an unstable driver, overheating, a hardware fault, an overlay conflict, or a game-side regression.
If the game still crashes after Windows updates, file repair, a clean driver test, overlays disabled, and hardware tuning returned to default, stop repeating the same steps. Record when the crash occurs, whether the whole PC is affected, any exact error text, recent updates, and relevant Windows reliability or event-log entries. Contact Rare Support or the relevant launcher support team with those details.
