If Life Is Strange crashes, freezes, or will not load on PS4, work through this order: close and restart the game, update the game and console, power-cycle the PS4, restore licenses, verify every episode has finished downloading, reinstall the game, and then rebuild the database. Back up saves before deleting data or using any initialization option. This sequence follows Square Enix and PlayStation guidance while separating game, save, license, and console faults.
Confirm which Life Is Strange you own
“Life Is Strange” can mean several different PS4 products. Identify the exact title shown on the PS4 home screen or in Library before applying advice.

Also note when the failure occurs: at launch, after “Press any button to start,” while loading one episode or save, during a cutscene, or across several games. Record any error code, including CE-34878-0 or CE-41839-5.
Protect saves before changing anything
Deleting the application normally removes installed game files, not separate saved-data files. Deleting saved data can permanently remove progress. Initialize PS4 and Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) erase user data.

Make a USB backup
- From the function screen, open Trophies, press OPTIONS, and choose Sync Trophies.
- Insert a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive.
- Go to Settings > System > Back Up and Restore.
- Select Back Up and ensure saved data is included.
PlayStation says the drive needs at least twice the storage space required by the backup file: PS4 backup instructions. PS Plus users can check online storage, but verify that synchronization completed before relying on a cloud save.
Fast, low-risk fixes
1. Close the application and restart
- Press the PS button.
- Highlight Life Is Strange, press OPTIONS, and choose Close Application.
- Relaunch it. If the PS4 is unresponsive, shut it down fully rather than repeatedly selecting Rest Mode.
2. Update the game and PS4
Highlight the game, press OPTIONS, and select Check for Update. Then open Settings > System Software Update. If an update is stuck, open Notifications, highlight the update, choose OPTIONS > Delete, and retry. For repeated failures, use only PlayStation’s official USB update instructions and the exact PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP folder structure: PS4 system software.
3. Power-cycle the console
- Turn off the PS4 with the front power button.
- Unplug the power cable from the back.
- Wait two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable, turn on the console, and test the game.
This clears a temporary system state more completely than Rest Mode. Square Enix documents this procedure in its PlayStation crash guide.

4. Restore licenses
Use this when a digital game has a padlock, episodes or add-ons are missing, or the account or primary-PS4 status recently changed. Go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore. PlayStation says this does not affect saved data and may help with crashes: restore licenses. It cannot repair a damaged disc.

5. Finish every download
Open Notifications > Downloads. Wait for the base game, episodes, and required add-ons to finish. A digital title can show “ready to use” while additional data is still downloading; players have reported startup crashes in that situation, but it is not established as a universal cause: community report.
Reinstall the game correctly
Square Enix’s original-game sequence places re-downloading after restart and updates: support article. Reinstalling replaces application files; it does not prove that a save or hard drive is healthy.

Digital copy
- Highlight the game, press OPTIONS, and select Delete.
- Open Library > Purchased and download it again using the purchasing PSN account.
- Re-download owned episodes and add-ons.
- Wait until all downloads and installations finish before launching.
Disc copy
- Eject the disc and clean it with a soft, clean cloth.
- Reinsert it. If necessary, delete the installed application.
- Reinstall from the disc and apply every available update.
A physically damaged disc will not be repaired by a license restore or a digital-style reinstall. Test another disc game if reading problems continue.
Rebuild the PS4 database
Use this after reinstalling when crashes persist alongside slow menus, missing icons, storage warnings, or repeated indexing problems. It scans the drive and creates a new content database; it is not a guaranteed repair for damaged game files, saves, or a failing drive.

- Press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualShock 4 with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select 5. Rebuild Database and wait for the scan to finish.
Do not unplug the console during the operation. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode instructions. Option 5 is different from options 6 and 7, which erase data.

If only one episode or save crashes
Back up the save before testing. Try a new game, another save slot, or a different episode. If those work while one save consistently fails, damaged save data is possible, but it cannot be confirmed without comparison. Do not delete the only save. Restore an earlier USB or cloud copy only when you understand that it may overwrite newer progress.
When the PS4 itself may be at fault
Stop repeatedly reinstalling Life Is Strange if unrelated games also crash or the console shows several of these symptoms:
- Frequent application errors in other games.
- Very slow menus, unusually long loading, or repeated database rebuilds.
- Games failing to install or update.
- Unexpected shutdowns, excessive fan noise, or heat.
- Problems reading multiple discs.
One game crash alone does not diagnose a bad hard drive. Broader symptoms justify PlayStation’s repair and support routes: PS4 support.

Initialization is a last resort
Only consider these after backing up data, confirming your PSN credentials, and ensuring the game can be downloaded again or the disc is available:
- Initialize PS4: deletes user data and returns the console to its original state.
- Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software): deletes user data and removes and reinstalls the PS4 firmware.
Initialization cannot be undone and is not a guaranteed Life Is Strange fix. PlayStation’s warnings and Safe Mode options are documented here and here. Square Enix places system-software reinstallation after restart, updating, and re-download, not at the start.

When to contact support
Provide the exact game and edition, disc or digital status, PS4 model, error code, crash location, whether other games fail, every step attempted, and whether the problem survives a complete reinstall. Use the official Square Enix support index and PlayStation’s error-code guidance, including CE-41839-5 troubleshooting, rather than applying the same fix to every code.
