Your Xbox Series X|S reports the NAT behavior created by your modem, router, mesh system, hotspot, or ISP. Start with a restart and UPnP, then check for double NAT before forwarding ports. If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), only an ISP-side change can provide the public IPv4 path that Open NAT generally requires.
What Open, Moderate and Strict NAT mean
NAT controls how readily your console can establish connections with other players. Open NAT can generally connect to consoles behind Open, Moderate or Strict NAT. Moderate NAT usually connects to Open or Moderate consoles, but some peer-to-peer sessions may fail. Strict NAT has the most restricted inbound connectivity, making party chat, hosting and joining particular players more likely to fail.
NAT is not a measurement of download speed, Wi-Fi strength or ping. It can differ between Xbox Network Settings and an individual game, between consoles in the same home, and between your home broadband and a mobile hotspot. Open NAT improves reachability and session establishment; it does not automatically lower latency.
Check the Xbox result before changing anything
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system, then Settings.
- Go to General → Network settings and read NAT type.
- Select Test NAT type.
- If matchmaking or party chat is failing, also run Test multiplayer connection.
System updates can change wording slightly; if the labels differ, use the search function within Network settings for “NAT type.” Microsoft’s troubleshooting reference is Xbox NAT error troubleshooting.

Fix 1: Restart the network, then enable UPnP
Restart the Xbox, modem or ISP gateway, and router before making advanced changes. Then enable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), which lets the Xbox request temporary port mappings.
- Find the router administration address on its label, documentation or app.
- Sign in and open a section named Advanced, Network, NAT, Internet or Firewall.
- Enable UPnP, save, and restart the router.
- Fully restart the Xbox and run Test NAT type again.
Menus vary by manufacturer and ISP; UPnP may be unavailable on an ISP-managed gateway, or appear enabled while failing to create a working mapping. Keep router firmware current and use a strong administrator password. UPnP allows devices on your network to request mappings, so disable it when it is unnecessary and manual configuration is practical. Do not combine UPnP, manual forwarding and DMZ while troubleshooting; conflicting or stale mappings make the result harder to diagnose. Microsoft gives the same warning in its multiplayer troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 2: Remove double NAT
Double NAT means two devices are routing traffic: for example, an ISP modem/router feeding your own router, an ISP gateway feeding a mesh system in router mode, or two personal routers in series. Common clues are Strict NAT, unsuccessful UPnP, NAT that changes after restarts, or forwarding that works on one device but not the other.
Preferred: access-point mode
Put your personal router or mesh system in access-point/bridge mode. The ISP gateway remains the only NAT router.

Alternative: bridge or passthrough mode
Put the ISP gateway into bridge or passthrough mode so your personal router becomes the sole routing and NAT device. Availability and terminology depend on the ISP.
Fallback: forward through both routers
Forwarding between both routers is more complex and can still fail with symmetric NAT or conflicting UPnP behavior. Do not put the Xbox itself into bridge mode; bridge mode applies to the gateway/router arrangement.
Fix 3: Reserve the Xbox’s local IP address
- On Xbox, open Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings.
- Record the console’s IPv4 address and MAC address.
- In the router, create a DHCP reservation for that MAC address.
- Confirm the Xbox keeps the reserved address after reconnecting.
A reservation prevents a changing local address from silently breaking forwarding rules.
Fix 4: Forward Xbox Live ports manually
Use forwarding only after UPnP fails or is unavailable. Add these rules to the router that actually holds the public-facing WAN address, targeting the reserved Xbox IP. The list below is Microsoft’s consumer Xbox Live list; check the official page for future changes: Xbox Live network ports.

- Enter each required rule with the correct TCP or UDP protocol.
- Save the configuration and restart the router and Xbox.
- Run Test NAT type and Test multiplayer connection.
Port 3074 alone may not resolve Teredo, party-chat or other Xbox Live functions. Forwarding cannot overcome CGNAT, ISP filtering, a second router, or a router firmware problem, and it is not guaranteed to produce Open NAT.
Multiple Xbox consoles: use Alternate port selection
Two consoles can compete for the same external Xbox Live port. Enable UPnP first. If one console remains Moderate or Strict, try the console-side alternate-port feature:
- Open Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings.
- Select Alternate port selection → Manual.
- Choose an available alternate port and retest NAT.
Exact choices can change with system software. This setting does not bypass CGNAT or double NAT and does not replace a valid public IPv4 path. If experimentation causes new problems, return it to Automatic. Manual forwarding for multiple consoles may require different external ports and is substantially more complicated.
Check whether your ISP uses CGNAT
Carrier-grade NAT shares one public IPv4 address among customers, preventing unsolicited inbound mappings from reaching your home even when the router is configured correctly.

- Compare the router’s WAN/Internet IPv4 address with the public address shown by a reputable IP-check service.
- A WAN address in
100.64.0.0/10is reserved for carrier-grade NAT under RFC 6598. - Addresses in
10.0.0.0/8,172.16.0.0/12or192.168.0.0/16usually indicate another upstream router or gateway.
Ask the ISP whether the connection uses CGNAT and whether it can provide a public IPv4 address, bridge/passthrough mode, or a gaming/public-IP option. Availability, pricing and whether the address is dynamic vary by ISP and plan. IPv6 support does not automatically make the Xbox NAT test Open.
DMZ or exposed-host mode: diagnostic only
A router DMZ (also called exposed host) sends unsolicited inbound traffic to one internal device. Temporarily assigning the Xbox’s reserved IP can show whether router filtering is the cause, but it exposes more network surface than forwarding specific ports and is not a preferred permanent fix.
- Never place the whole home network or the router itself in a DMZ.
- Use only the Xbox’s reserved address.
- Remove the rule after testing, then retest with UPnP or forwarding.
What to do when NAT is still Strict
Strict NAT and UPnP is unsuccessful
- Enable UPnP and restart all network equipment.
- Check for double NAT.
- Reserve the Xbox address and forward the official ports.
- If that fails, investigate CGNAT or contact the ISP.
Strict NAT but UPnP is successful
Restart the router and Xbox, remove duplicate or stale manual rules, check for a second router, and consider Alternate port selection when multiple consoles are present. Do not assume Wi-Fi is the cause.
Moderate NAT
Moderate may already be sufficient for many games. Pursue Open only when there is a concrete problem such as failed hosting, party chat trouble or inability to join particular players; avoid risky DMZ changes merely to change the label.

Forwarding appears to do nothing
- The rule targets the wrong or changed Xbox IP.
- The rule was entered on the wrong router.
- Double NAT, CGNAT or ISP filtering blocks inbound traffic.
- Router firmware mishandles mappings.
- Another console or device is competing for the port.
- The game needs additional, game-specific networking beyond Xbox Live’s base requirements.
NAT changes after every restart
Suspect UPnP lease conflicts, multiple consoles, an unstable router, a changing Xbox address, mesh or gateway role changes, or inconsistent ISP-side NAT.
Settings that are often blamed incorrectly
- Ethernet: improves stability and interference resistance but normally does not change NAT, which is determined by the routing path.
- DNS: can help name-resolution failures but normally does not convert Strict NAT to Open.
- IPv6: can help when correctly supported, but is not a universal NAT fix.
- Clearing alternate MAC address: a reset step, not a proven NAT conversion.
- Factory reset: last resort; it erases settings and cannot fix CGNAT or ISP restrictions.
- VPN: commonly makes inbound connectivity harder. Use one only if it specifically supports inbound port forwarding and you understand the limitations.
When hardware or an ISP upgrade is justified
A configurable standalone router can help when the ISP gateway lacks reliable UPnP, DHCP reservations, bridge mode or forwarding. For example, the TP-Link Archer AX55 supports router and access-point modes, web/app administration, gigabit ports, Wi-Fi 6 and VPN features; the manufacturer page did not state a current US price on August 18, 2026.
Do not buy a “gaming router” solely for Strict NAT if the ISP uses CGNAT or the new router will sit behind an unchanged gateway and create double NAT. A mesh system is worthwhile for coverage or roaming, not inherently for NAT. For CGNAT, asking the ISP for a public IPv4 address or bridge/passthrough service is usually more relevant than new hardware; terms and prices are ISP-specific.
Verify the actual game after the Xbox test
After the console reports Moderate or Open, test the affected game and party chat. Games may display their own NAT label and use additional networking. Xbox services, game servers, account restrictions, outages and game-specific firewall behavior can still cause failures even when Xbox NAT is Open.
The Bottom Line
Use this order: restart everything, enable UPnP, remove double NAT, reserve the Xbox IP, forward Microsoft’s ports if necessary, then investigate alternate ports and CGNAT. If the router does not have a public IPv4 path, no Xbox setting or new router can guarantee Open NAT.
