To switch profiles, choose Switch User and select the profile. To remove a profile from that console, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Users > Delete Users. That last action is not the same as closing the person’s PlayStation account: account closure must be requested through PlayStation Support.
PS5 user profile, PlayStation account, and guest: what’s the difference?

Choose the action that matches your goal: switching changes the active profile; adding creates a local user or signs in to an account; deleting a user removes a profile from this PS5; closing an account is a separate request to PlayStation Support.
How to add an existing PlayStation account to PS5
- On the PS5 Home screen, select the profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Select Switch User, then Add User.
- Select Get Started.
- Follow the sign-in prompts. Enter the account’s sign-in ID and password, or use another sign-in method offered on screen, such as a passkey or PlayStation App sign-in.
- Complete any verification prompts.
This is the route in PlayStation’s account-creation and sign-in instructions. Adding the account to the console does not transfer ownership to the PS5; the account remains usable on other compatible devices.
How to create a new PlayStation account on PS5
- Select the profile picture on the Home screen.
- Choose Switch User > Add User > Get Started.
- Choose Create an Account and follow the prompts.
- Provide the requested details and verify the email address.
PlayStation’s account setup asks for details such as date of birth, country or region, preferred language, sign-in ID, password, and online ID. Enter the date of birth and country or region accurately: PlayStation notes that some account details cannot later be changed. See PlayStation’s account-creation instructions.

Creating or managing a child account
A parent or guardian who is the family manager can manage child accounts and parental controls through Family Management or the PlayStation Family app. You can also begin on the console with Switch User > Add User > Get Started > Create an Account and follow the parental-control prompts. How to switch users on PS5
From the Home screen
- Select the profile picture in the upper-right corner.
- Select Switch User.
- Choose the profile you want to use.
With the PS button
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select the avatar or profile icon.
- Choose Switch User, then select the profile.
The avatar-and-switch route is also described in the PS5 Quick Start Guide. Switching changes the active local profile; it does not sign the account out of every device, remove the profile, close the online account, or change console-sharing settings.
How to use a guest or temporary user
- Open the profile menu and choose Switch User > Add User.
- Look for the guest, one-time, or temporary-play option shown on your console.
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
Menu wording and guest availability can differ, so use the option actually displayed rather than assuming every PS5 has an identical label. A guest is suitable for a short visit when the player does not need a permanent profile. Do not rely on guest play to retain saves, trophies, or settings.
Use or create a full PlayStation account if the player wants persistent trophies, friends, purchases, cloud saves, a PlayStation Plus subscription, parental controls, or use across multiple consoles. PlayStation describes account continuity and related features in its account support information.

How to delete a user profile from your PS5
- If necessary, sign in to another user with permission to manage console users.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Users and Accounts > Users > Delete Users.
- Select the profile to remove and confirm.
Menu names can change slightly with PS5 system software. If the labels differ, look under Users and Accounts and check for system updates.
Before confirming deletion
Removing a profile may remove information stored locally for that user, including save data, screenshots, video clips, settings, and automatic sign-in details. Before proceeding, check whether anything important exists only on this console.
- Upload compatible saves to cloud storage if the user has PlayStation Plus.
- Copy important saves or media to USB where supported; do not assume USB backup covers every kind of data.
- Confirm the account’s sign-in email and password so the user can sign in again if needed.
- Check that the user does not need local-only saves, clips, or settings.
Deleting the local profile does not automatically close the online account or erase its purchases, trophies, friends, or subscription. If you remove the wrong profile, local-only data may not be recoverable; check available cloud and USB backups.
How to remove someone from PlayStation Family Management
Family membership and a local PS5 profile are separate. To remove an adult family member, the family manager can sign in, open Family Management, select the adult, and choose Remove from Your Family. PlayStation notes that removing an adult who was a parent or guardian also removes their ability to set parental controls. See PlayStation’s family-account instructions.

PlayStation says child family members cannot be removed from the family. That restriction is different from removing the child’s local user profile from a particular PS5. See PlayStation Family app support.
How to close a PlayStation account permanently
There is no local PS5 user-deletion command that closes the underlying PlayStation account. Under PlayStation’s US Terms of Service, account closure must be requested through PlayStation Support. Have the account’s sign-in ID, online ID, and security information available when you contact them: PlayStation US Terms of Service.
Account closure is a serious step. It may affect access to digital purchases, PlayStation Plus benefits, trophies, friends, cloud saves, the online ID, and related services. Confirm the specific consequences with Support before submitting a closure request; the applicable terms and support process may vary by region.
If you only want to stop using an account on this console, consider removing its local profile instead. If the concern is security, other options include changing the password, changing the sign-in ID, removing payment methods, or deactivating devices. PlayStation’s account support hub, password reset support, and Console Sharing and Offline Play support cover account management and device settings.

If you sold, lost, or gave away your PS5
If you can still use the console, remove your local profile. If it is no longer accessible, secure the account rather than assuming local profile deletion has happened.
- Change the account password and review sign-in security using PlayStation password reset support.
- Remove saved payment methods if you no longer want them associated with the account.
- Review Console Sharing and Offline Play. PlayStation says console sharing can be enabled on one PS5 at a time; remote deactivation of all devices is limited to once every six months. See PlayStation’s console-sharing instructions.
- If the console has already changed hands, do not access another person’s account. A factory reset is broader than deleting one user and erases console data for all users; use the appropriate reset/setup process for a device you own.
Console Sharing and Offline Play allows other users on the enabled PS5 to access specified purchased games and some PlayStation Plus benefits. It does not transfer ownership of the purchasing account or its games.

The Add User option or labels look different
Check that the console is running current system software, then look under the profile menu and Users and Accounts. Sony can adjust menu layout and labels, and guest availability may depend on settings or the selected mode.
You forgot the password or cannot sign in
Use PlayStation’s password-reset and account-recovery guidance. You may need access to the account email or help from Support. A sign-in problem is not solved by deleting the local profile.

A child cannot access a profile or feature
Check family-management restrictions, parental controls, the family manager’s credentials, and whether the account is locked or suspended. Removing a local profile does not alter the child’s family status.
Games disappeared after a profile was removed
The games may have been purchased by another account. Access by other users can also depend on whether Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled for the purchasing account on that PS5; see PlayStation’s sharing guidance.
You cannot close the account from PS5 Settings
That is expected: PlayStation’s US Terms of Service direct account-closure requests to Support. Use the account details listed in the terms when contacting them.
