Official PC requirements: compatibility, not a 4K target
Steam lists the same broad requirements for the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree. The expansion launched on Steam on June 20, 2024 and requires the base game. These specifications indicate that the game should launch at the developer’s target, not that it will deliver 4K Ultra, ray tracing or high-refresh performance.

See the Steam technical requirements and the Steam expansion listing. A GTX 1070-class card is an old compatibility recommendation, not a modern 4K buying recommendation.
Build 1: sensible 1080p PC
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 or another current six-core gaming processor.
- Cooler: A quality tower air cooler; an included stock cooler can work, but a tower cooler generally reduces noise and sustained temperatures.
- Motherboard: B650-class AM5 board with firmware support for the selected CPU.
- GPU: Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB, GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or comparable current midrange card.
- Memory: 32GB DDR5-6000 as a matched 2×16GB kit.
- Storage: 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD minimum; 2TB is more practical for several large games.
- Power and case: Reputable 650–750W 80 Plus Gold PSU and an airflow-focused case with two intake fans and one exhaust fan.
This is already well above the official recommended specification. Spending on a flagship CPU or GPU solely for 1080p Elden Ring is difficult to justify; put the difference into a reliable platform, SSD capacity and cooling.

Nvidia lists 12GB of GDDR7 for the RTX 5070 and announced a $549 launch price. Its marketplace showed that price but marked the card out of stock when crawled, so neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed 2026 retail price: Nvidia marketplace and Nvidia’s launch announcement. This tier is a strong all-round choice for modern 1440p and occasional 4K output without paying for a flagship card.
Build 3: 4K value PC
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, or a Ryzen 5 7600/9600-class processor when the budget is GPU-led.
- Cooler and board: Quality tower cooler and B650/B850-class AM5 motherboard.
- GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB or GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB.
- Memory and storage: 32GB DDR5-6000 and 2TB NVMe SSD.
- Power and case: 850W Gold PSU and a high-airflow case with three or more effective fans.
AMD specifies 16GB GDDR6, 304W board power, two 8-pin connectors and a 750W recommended PSU for the RX 9070 XT (AMD specifications; product page). A 9070 XT is compelling when its street price is substantially below an RTX 5080 and you value raster performance and 16GB of VRAM. Nvidia is the safer direction when ray tracing, DLSS, CUDA or creator software matters more.
Build 4: premium 4K and ray tracing
- CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D or equivalent high-end gaming processor.
- Cooling: High-end dual-tower air cooler or 280/360mm liquid cooler.
- Motherboard: Strong B850/X870-class AM5 board chosen for connectivity, expansion and firmware support.
- GPU: GeForce RTX 5080 16GB.
- Memory and storage: 32GB minimum; 64GB for heavy multitasking, creation or virtual machines; 2–4TB NVMe SSD.
- Power and case: 850–1000W Gold-or-better PSU with the native GPU connector and a large airflow-oriented case.
Nvidia lists 16GB GDDR7 and 960GB/sec memory bandwidth for the RTX 5080. Its announced $999 starting price is an MSRP signal, not a guaranteed 2026 street price (RTX 5080 specifications). This class is justified for a broader premium 4K library; it is wasteful if the only goal is 1080p Elden Ring.
Is the game GPU- or CPU-limited?
The answer changes with resolution, preset, ray tracing, location, background processes, driver version and any frame-rate modification. At 4K, the GPU normally dominates, so a faster graphics card and more VRAM are the logical upgrades. At 1080p, a modern CPU can improve frame-time consistency, but there is no evidence here that a flagship processor is necessary for this game alone. Average FPS also does not describe one-percent lows or traversal stutter; do not assume a higher average guarantees perfect pacing.
RAM, VRAM and storage priorities
System memory
Although the official recommendation is 16GB, 32GB is the sensible capacity for a new gaming PC and future game releases. Use two matched DIMMs for dual-channel operation. Do not buy a particular memory speed expecting a guaranteed FPS increase.

Graphics memory
- 8GB can work at 1080p, but offers less headroom for newer games and high-resolution textures.
- 12GB is a reasonable minimum target for a new midrange card.
- 16GB is preferable for a new 4K-oriented build.
VRAM capacity does not replace GPU rendering power: the RTX 5070 has 12GB GDDR7, while the RTX 5080 and RX 9070 XT have 16GB.
SSD capacity
The published requirement is 60GB, but a 1TB NVMe drive is a practical minimum for a new system and 2TB avoids constant game shuffling. Leave free space for updates and the operating system.
Nvidia or AMD?
| Priority | More defensible direction |
|---|---|
| Lowest cost for conventional raster performance | Compare current RX 9000-series street prices |
| Ray tracing | Nvidia deserves consideration; verify game-specific results |
| DLSS and Nvidia software ecosystem | Nvidia |
| 16GB VRAM at a competitive price | RX 9070 XT-class card |
| Streaming, CUDA or creator tools | Nvidia may fit better |
| Quiet 1080p system | Choose the model with the better current cooler and power profile |
DLSS, FSR and frame generation are features to test separately; they do not automatically remove input latency or traversal stutter.

Ray tracing: enable it only after establishing a baseline
Ray tracing changes selected lighting and shadow effects and is substantially more demanding than standard rendering. Bandai Namco’s low-quality/low-ray-tracing specification lists an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT with a Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 3800XT, showing that RT has a materially higher hardware threshold than the ordinary recommended preset. In a timing-sensitive action game, smooth frame pacing may be preferable to the visual change.
If performance is unexpectedly poor, check that RT was not enabled accidentally. Disable it through System → Graphics → Set Ray Tracing Quality → Off, as documented in the official patch notes. Then evaluate resolution, quality settings and upscaling independently.

Upgrading an existing PC
- Below GTX 1060/RX 580 class: A complete replacement may be more sensible than stacking upgrades on an old platform.
- At or above the official recommended tier: Find the actual bottleneck before buying anything.
- 1080p: Check CPU frame times, dual-channel memory, thermals, drivers and background applications.
- 4K: GPU utilization and VRAM usually deserve priority over a CPU swap.
- Before a GPU upgrade: Verify PSU capacity and connectors, case length, airflow, motherboard clearance and BIOS support.
Stutter can also involve overlays, shader compilation or traversal behavior, thermal throttling, unstable memory, mods and game-specific engine behavior. A more expensive GPU cannot guarantee that every hitch disappears.
Prebuilt or custom?
A prebuilt is reasonable when you value one-system warranty coverage, assembly support or a genuinely lower total price. Before ordering, verify the exact GPU and VRAM, PSU brand and wattage, dual-channel memory, SSD capacity and replaceability, CPU cooler, motherboard, case airflow, Windows activation and the return policy. Laptop GPU names are not directly comparable with desktop cards because power limits and cooling differ.
