If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt crashes on your Steam Deck, first change REDlauncher’s graphics API from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11. CD PROJEKT RED’s Steam Deck guidance says DX12 is the default and recommends launching the game in DX11 mode: official support instructions. This is a stability-first workaround, not a guarantee for crashes caused by damaged files, mods, Proton regressions, or system instability.
Only bypass REDlauncher when the launcher itself will not open. The community option --launcher-skip removes the launcher but does not automatically select DX11, so configure DX11 first whenever possible.
Identify which crash you have
“The Witcher 3 is crashing” can describe several different failures:
| Symptom | Most useful first checks |
|---|---|
| Crash immediately after Play | Set DX11, then remove custom launch options and verify files. |
| Steam returns to the library | Check REDlauncher, launch options, and Proton. |
| Crash while loading a save or returning control to Geralt | Test DX11, another save, and a new game; disable mods and overlays. |
| Crash after several minutes | Reduce demanding settings, cap the frame rate, and check heat, overlays, and Proton. |
| Black screen with audio | Suspect an API/rendering or compatibility problem; test a clean DX11 launch. |
| Entire Deck reboots | Treat it as system stability trouble, not an ordinary game crash. |
Try the official fix: force DirectX 11
- In Gaming Mode, open Library → The Witcher 3 → Play.
- Let REDlauncher open. Its layout can change, so look for the gear, settings, or graphics/API control near the Play button.
- Change DirectX 12 to DirectX 11.
- Launch the game. If the selection does not appear to take effect, close and reopen the game once.
- Reach the main menu and load a test save before restoring mods or optimization tools.
DX11 is the practical first choice for Steam Deck because CD PROJEKT RED specifically directs Deck users to it, while DX12 is the launcher default. The next-generation PC update also produced Steam Deck crash reports where users commonly reported DX11 as the workaround; that history does not mean every DX12 installation is broken.

Test the launcher in Desktop Mode
Launch Steam and the game once in Desktop Mode. This is diagnostic rather than a guaranteed fix: it helps distinguish a Gaming Mode presentation problem from a launcher or compatibility failure.
Bypass the launcher
- Open the game’s Steam page and choose Properties.
- Stay on General.
- Enter
--launcher-skipin Launch Options. - Close Properties and test the game.
This workaround is documented by Steam community users, not as CD PROJEKT RED’s official Deck instruction: launcher-bypass discussion. Skipping REDlauncher can leave the game using DX12, so it may reproduce the original crash. Community troubleshooting reports explicitly warn about that trap: DX11 and launcher discussion. Remove the option and return to the launcher if bypassing it makes the problem worse.

Clean up before changing Proton
Verify installed files
- Open Properties for the game.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam, and test DX11 again.
Verification checks game data. It does not necessarily reset a damaged Proton prefix, shader cache, launcher state, or user configuration.
Remove custom launch options
Temporarily empty the launch-options box, except for --launcher-skip when you have independently confirmed that REDlauncher is the blocker. Remove Lossless Scaling commands, frame-generation or upscaling wrappers, MangoHud and other overlays, experimental environment variables, and old commands copied from previous guides. A Reddit report attributes a later launch failure to an old Lossless Scaling command, but that is anecdotal: community report.

Disable mods and overlays
Test the unmodified game with third-party overlays disabled. If it works, restore one mod or tool at a time so the conflicting change is identifiable.
Test Proton methodically
Make Proton changes only after DX11 and a clean launch configuration have been tested. Change one variable at a time and note which version works.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.

- If the failure began after a SteamOS or Proton change, test Proton Experimental.
- If the game previously worked with a known Proton version, test that version again.
- Use Proton-GE as an advanced compatibility experiment, not a universal cure. Community reports mention different GE releases, but no current build is established as best for every Deck.
ProtonUp-Qt can install custom Proton builds from Desktop Mode, but it adds another moving part. After installing a build, return to Gaming Mode, open Properties → Compatibility, select it, and test with no extra launch options. The project is available at https://github.com/DavidoTek/ProtonUp-Qt.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Back up local saves before deleting configuration data or a Proton prefix.
- Clear shader data only as an escalation step; rebuilding it can cause temporary stutter.
- Rename configuration files before deleting them so you can restore them if needed.
- A Proton prefix is the Windows-like environment for the game; deleting it can reset launcher state and locally stored configuration. It is not a routine first fix.
Steam Cloud and CDPR cross-progression are separate concepts. Cross-progression uses a linked GOG/CDPR account, while ordinary local play does not require that connection; see the relevant community discussion for the distinction: cross-progression discussion.
Stability-first graphics settings
Once the game launches, keep the baseline simple: DX11, no ray tracing, default settings, and a conservative frame-rate cap. Disable demanding optional effects before changing several settings at once. Add external scaling or frame-generation tools only after the unmodified game is stable. A fixed 30-fps target is a sensible baseline, but results vary by Deck model, resolution, scene, SteamOS, Proton, and settings; no universal frame-rate figure can be promised.
When an update caused the problem
Identify what changed: the game build, Steam client, SteamOS, Proton, shader/GPU stack, a Decky plugin, an overlay, a dock or display, or a mod. Return to DX11 with no mods and an empty launch-options field. If that clean setup works, reintroduce changes one at a time. If only one Proton branch fails, use the working branch temporarily and report the regression rather than stacking more commands.
When the Deck itself reboots
A full reboot is broader than a game crash. Fully update SteamOS, test without a dock, external display, or unusual accessory, and check whether other games trigger the reboot. If system-wide instability continues, contact Valve support. For a game-only failure that persists in a clean DX11 configuration, use CD PROJEKT RED support.

- DX11 selected in REDlauncher.
- No unnecessary launch options, overlays, or mods.
- Steam files verified.
- Default Proton tested before Experimental or Proton-GE.
- Another save and a new game tested for loading crashes.
- Saves backed up before prefix or configuration cleanup.
- SteamOS and accessories checked if the whole Deck reboots.
The Bottom Line
For the Steam version on Steam Deck, select DX11 first. Verify files and remove custom launch options next; bypass REDlauncher with --launcher-skip only when the launcher itself is failing, and remember that bypassing it can leave DX12 active.
