PS5 has separate 3D-audio controls for each output type. For TV speakers, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV), measure the room with the DualSense microphone, and enable Enable 3D Audio for TV Speakers. For a headset, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones), create a personalized profile or choose one of five presets, and enable Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
What PS5 3D Audio does
PS5 3D Audio processes compatible game and media sound so effects can appear to come from different directions and heights. It is spatial processing, not a volume boost and not the same as selecting a television’s “surround” sound mode.
The result depends on your output device, seating position, room and speaker placement, the game or content’s audio design, and your hearing preferences. Some games make direction and height cues obvious; menus, dialogue-heavy scenes, or ordinary stereo content may not. Stereo can sound better to some listeners, so use the PS5 comparison demonstrations rather than assuming 3D is always superior.
Sony’s current US support labels, documented in August 2026, are used below. Names can vary slightly with console language or future system-software updates. See Sony’s PS5 3D Audio support page.
#1 Best Overall
- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings
Enable 3D Audio for TV speakers
- Turn on the PS5 and television.
- Sit in your normal playing position, ideally centered in front of the TV.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Sound, then 3D Audio (TV).
- Follow the on-screen room-acoustics measurement. The DualSense wireless controller’s built-in microphone measures the sound from the TV speakers, so hold or position the controller exactly as instructed and remain in your usual seat.
- Compare the stereo and 3D-audio demonstrations at similar perceived volume.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for TV Speakers.
- When shown, leave Apply 3D Audio Measurement Results enabled to use the calibration.
Measure again after moving the TV, changing your seat, rearranging the room, or making major furniture or acoustic changes. The measurement is tied to that listening position and environment.
TV-speaker setup tips
- Keep the television’s speakers unobstructed.
- Disable television sound-quality adjustments, especially virtual-surround processing, while evaluating PS5 3D Audio. Stacking two spatial effects can add coloration or make the comparison misleading; this is a troubleshooting best practice, not an absolute requirement for every TV.
- If you use a soundbar, AV receiver, external stereo speakers, eARC, or optical output, results may differ from the TV’s own speakers. First test the mode through the built-in speakers, then consult the external audio device’s documentation if its processing changes the signal path.
Enable 3D Audio for headphones or a headset
- Connect the headset through its supported connection method before opening the audio settings.
- Go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Select Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile and follow the listening and positioning prompts, or select one of the five 3D-audio presets.
- If you created a profile, turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
The personalization test plays sounds from different positions and angles and asks you to identify where they seem to come from. Answer consistently and in your normal listening position. A personalized profile is an available tailored option, not a guarantee that it will sound better than a preset. If it sounds unnatural, try all five presets or create the profile again.

- USB headset: Connect a compatible USB-A or USB-C headset, then confirm it under Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- USB wireless headset: Insert its compatible wireless adapter into the PS5, power on the headset, and wait for the adapter and headset to connect.
- PlayStation Link: For PULSE Elite, turn on the PS5, insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port, press the PlayStation Link button on the headset, and wait for the indicators to show a connection before completing any on-screen prompts. PS5 performs the 3D-audio processing; a headset does not have to advertise “3D audio.” Sony identifies compatible 3.5-mm, USB-A, USB-C, and supported wireless-adapter connections. Individual models still vary, so check the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information. Sony’s FAQ says third-party Bluetooth-only headsets are not supported as direct PS5 audio devices: PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ.
Switching between TV and headset audio
Connecting or disconnecting a headset normally changes the active output. Confirm the current device at Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Configure 3D Audio (TV) for the television and 3D Audio (Headphones) for the headset; these are separate output configurations, not two effects that need to be enabled simultaneously.

TV speakers or headphones: which should you use?
| Factor | TV speakers | Headphones |
|---|---|---|
| Room-filling sound | Best for shared listening | Private listening |
| Positional detail | Depends strongly on room and seating | Usually more consistent for the wearer |
| Setup | Requires room measurement | Requires a compatible connection and profile or preset |
| Ideal conditions | Centered seat and unobstructed TV speakers | Noisy rooms, off-center seating, or late-night play |
| External equipment | Soundbars and receivers can alter results | Headset EQ or surround modes can alter results |
Fix missing options, no sound, or a weak effect
The headset has no audio or the 3D menu is unavailable
- Connect the headset, USB adapter, or controller cable before opening Settings > Sound.
- Check Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the intended device.
- Restart the PS5 and reconnect the headset or adapter.
- Confirm that the headset is PS5-compatible and uses 3.5 mm, USB, or a supported wireless adapter. A Bluetooth-only third-party headset is not a direct PS5 audio solution.
- Install a manufacturer firmware update when one is provided for the headset.
Wireless audio keeps disconnecting
Wireless-adapter interference can interrupt a connection. Move the adapter away from other USB 3.0 devices, remove unused wireless adapters, reduce the distance between headset and console, and reset the headset if its instructions provide a reset procedure.
