The message “Something went wrong. Try restarting GeForce Experience” is a generic startup or initialization error. It does not prove that your GeForce GPU is defective. The cause may be a hung NVIDIA process, a stopped service, damaged application files, a broken driver installation, Windows corruption, or a login/network conflict.
Work through the fixes below in order, from least disruptive to most advanced. Stop as soon as GeForce Experience—or the current NVIDIA software offered for your system—opens normally. NVIDIA’s driver pages may offer the NVIDIA App alongside the driver package, so GeForce Experience is not necessarily the only supported companion application: NVIDIA driver and software downloads.
Quick repair order
- Restart Windows.
- End NVIDIA processes in Task Manager, then restart Windows again.
- Start or restart the NVIDIA services that actually exist on your PC.
- Reinstall GeForce Experience or install NVIDIA’s currently offered software.
- Use the NVIDIA installer’s Custom (Advanced) and Perform a clean installation options.
- Run DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC).
- Use a Windows clean boot to find third-party conflicts.
- Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) only when ordinary reinstallation fails.
Repeatedly clicking the application’s restart prompt is rarely useful. A full Windows reboot clears processes and services that an application restart may leave stuck.
What the error actually means
GeForce Experience could not initialize one or more local components, communicate with the display driver, start an NVIDIA service, load its files, or complete an online operation. The wording does not identify which component failed.

Older troubleshooting guides often blame NVIDIA Telemetry Container or NVIDIA Display Container LS. Those are possible components, not universal causes; service names and software architecture differ between GeForce Experience, newer NVIDIA software, driver branches, desktop PCs, and laptops.
1. End NVIDIA processes and reboot
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Use the Processes or Details tab.
- End only NVIDIA-related entries that are present, such as NVIDIA Container, NVIDIA Share, NVIDIA Backend, or the NVIDIA application itself. Select an entry, choose End task, and repeat as needed.
- Restart Windows and try the application again.
Names vary by installed version. Do not terminate unrelated Windows processes. If the application worked before a crash or reboot, this is the safest likely fix.
2. Check NVIDIA services
- Press Windows + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Look for NVIDIA services that exist on your installation, such as NVIDIA Display Container LS, NVIDIA LocalSystem Container, NVIDIA NetworkService Container, NVIDIA Telemetry Container, or a GeForce Experience-related service.
- If a relevant service is stopped, right-click it and select Start. If it is running but unresponsive, choose Restart.
- Open Properties and confirm it has not been set to Disabled.
Do not change every NVIDIA service to Automatic, alter service logon accounts, or enable “interact with the desktop” because an old guide says to do so. If the services you expect are completely missing, treat that as evidence of an incomplete or damaged installation and reinstall the NVIDIA package instead of creating services manually.
3. Reinstall the application
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for GeForce Experience, select it, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current NVIDIA software or driver package from NVIDIA’s official download area, then install it and restart again.
Depending on your GPU and Windows version, NVIDIA may present the NVIDIA App, GeForce Experience, or a driver-only package. Do not use unofficial mirrors.

4. Clean-install the display driver
A damaged driver, an interrupted update, or Windows Update replacing a vendor driver can break the companion application even when the GPU itself is healthy.
- Download the correct package through NVIDIA’s driver selector.
- Run the installer and choose Custom (Advanced) when that option is available.
- Select Perform a clean installation.
- Install only the components you need, then restart Windows.
This is preferable to immediately removing every driver component. If the installer repeatedly fails, loops, or reports that no compatible hardware is found, continue to the DDU procedure.
5. Use DDU only as an advanced fallback
Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) can remove remnants left by failed NVIDIA installations and is useful after switching GPU vendors. It is not a harmless first-line repair: it requires careful cleanup, may leave Windows temporarily using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and incorrect choices can remove more than intended.
- Download the replacement NVIDIA driver before beginning.
- Download DDU only from its official vendor page and create a restore point or verify a recent backup where practical.
- Temporarily disconnecting from the internet can prevent Windows Update from immediately installing a different driver during cleanup; this is a precaution, not a universal requirement.
- Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU, select the NVIDIA GPU option, and choose Clean and restart.
- After normal Windows starts, install the driver you downloaded and restart again.
Do not routinely delete NVIDIA folders from Program Files, ProgramData, or the Registry. If the display is unusable after cleanup, restart, use Safe Mode or the basic display adapter, and install the prepared driver. Laptop owners should use the manufacturer’s driver if a generic package causes display-switching or hotkey problems.

6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
If other Windows applications are also unstable, repair the operating system rather than assuming NVIDIA is the sole cause. Open Command Prompt (Admin) or an elevated Windows Terminal and run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
When DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent, restart Windows, and test the NVIDIA software. Microsoft documents this order and these commands for Windows 10 and Windows 11 at its System File Checker guidance and expanded DISM/SFC instructions.
7. Test for a startup-software conflict with a clean boot
- Sign in with an administrator account and search for
msconfig. - Open System Configuration. On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled third-party startup items and restart Windows.
- Test the NVIDIA application.
If it works, re-enable services and startup items in groups to identify the conflict. GPU overclocking utilities, overlays, endpoint-security software, debloat tools, and startup optimizers are common candidates. After testing, open msconfig, select Normal startup on the General tab, re-enable the items, and restart. Microsoft’s procedure and restoration steps are documented at How to perform a clean boot.
If the message appears during login instead of at startup
A login failure is different from an application that cannot open. Check these items without permanently disabling protection:

- Review firewall or antivirus blocks for NVIDIA executables. If you test by pausing protection, keep the test brief, avoid unnecessary network activity, and re-enable protection immediately.
- Check whether a customized hosts file is blocking NVIDIA domains.
- Retry later if NVIDIA’s online service is temporarily unavailable.
If startup works but driver downloads or account features fail, a driver reinstall alone will not fix a network or security-software problem.

Laptops and hybrid graphics
OEM laptops may require manufacturer-specific drivers for power management, display switching, hotkeys, or integrated Intel/AMD graphics. If a generic NVIDIA package creates new problems, install the model-specific package from the laptop maker. Hybrid-graphics failures are not necessarily NVIDIA application failures.
Older or unsupported GPUs
Select the exact GPU family, notebook or desktop category, operating system, and 64-bit architecture. Some older cards receive security-update branches rather than current Game Ready drivers; NVIDIA’s 474.82 page, for example, lists a Windows 10 64-bit security-update branch for older Kepler products: driver details. A numerically newer driver is not automatically correct.
Check system type
Verify Settings > System > About > System type. Modern NVIDIA driver availability is generally aimed at 64-bit Windows, so do not assume every package applies to a 32-bit installation.

GeForce Experience is optional
If you only need a stable display driver, download it directly from NVIDIA’s driver selector. This avoids the companion application’s startup, login, overlay, and background-service features. Install GeForce Experience or the current NVIDIA companion software only if you want features such as automatic game optimization, in-game recording, overlays, account-linked functions, or automatic driver notifications.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, including ordinary free security updates and technical support. Existing PCs do not stop working, and these repairs can still restore an installation, but consider moving to Windows 11 if your hardware supports it. Microsoft’s support information is available at its Windows support page.
When to stop troubleshooting
- The display driver crashes repeatedly after clean installation.
- Device Manager reports a hardware error.
- The screen goes blank after every driver installation.
- Other Windows applications fail or the system shows blue screens, storage errors, or unexplained restarts.
- The problem persists after DDU, DISM/SFC, and a clean-boot test.
At that point, contact NVIDIA, the computer manufacturer, or a qualified technician. The original message alone does not establish GPU failure.
