A game that freezes every few seconds is usually hitting a repeated interruption—not merely running at a low average frame rate. First check whether it happens in one game or every game, and whether Windows keeps responding: those clues help separate a game or graphics problem from system-wide instability or network lag.
First, identify what “freezing” means
A short pause can come from rendering, the system, or the internet. Watch what happens outside the game during an incident; the distinction changes what is worth testing.
| What you observe | Likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| One game pauses, but Windows stays responsive | Game files, a patch, shader compilation, graphics settings, or a game-specific bug | Check for a recent game update, disable overlays, and verify the game files. |
| Several games pause, or the whole PC becomes unresponsive | Driver, temperature, memory, storage, background software, or hardware instability | Watch Task Manager and temperatures during a freeze. |
| Other players stop or teleport, but your camera and menus still respond | Network latency or packet loss | Check ping and packet loss; compare with a wired connection if available. |
| Audio loops or stops, mouse movement stalls, or Alt-Tab fails | A broader system freeze rather than an ordinary frame-rate dip | Note whether Windows recovers, crashes, or restarts; prioritize system and hardware checks. |
| The issue began immediately after a graphics-driver update | Possible driver regression | Test the previous stable driver rather than assuming the newest one is better. |
Average FPS can hide the problem: a game may report a reasonable average while individual frame-time spikes produce visible pauses. A network stall is different again; lowering texture quality will not fix packet loss.
1. Heat, throttling, or unstable power
When a CPU or GPU approaches a model-specific thermal or power limit, it can reduce its clock speed. A sudden clock drop that coincides with a temperature rise is useful evidence of throttling; no single temperature threshold applies to every desktop, laptop, processor, or graphics card. MSI’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking CPU and GPU temperatures, memory, drive health, drivers, and BIOS when games crash (MSI support); NVIDIA also lists overheating and excessive graphics-card clock settings among possible causes of crashes and freezes (NVIDIA support).

How to check
- Use a reputable hardware-monitoring tool to display CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, utilization, and—if available—frame time.
- Play until a pause occurs and check whether temperature rises as clock speed falls or utilization changes sharply.
- For a desktop, make sure vents are unobstructed and fans are turning. For a laptop, use it on a hard surface with its vents clear and the correct power adapter connected.
MSI describes Afterburner as a monitoring and overclocking utility and documents its on-screen statistics (MSI Afterburner guidance). Use monitoring first; do not change voltage or clock settings as an initial fix.
What to try
- Clear dust from vents and fans, improve desktop case airflow, and check for a failed fan or pump.
- Temporarily return CPU/GPU overclocks and undervolts to stock settings.
- Check that desktop GPU power cables are fully seated; use the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions for any firmware work.
- If temperatures remain abnormal or the PC shuts down under load, seek a hardware diagnosis rather than guessing at a replacement part.
2. Graphics drivers, Windows settings, or shader compilation
A damaged or incompatible graphics driver can cause rendering pauses, driver resets, black screens, or crashes. A new driver may help, but it can also introduce a game-specific regression. Intel recommends checking available graphics drivers, considering a clean installation when appropriate, and testing with Windows background recording disabled (Intel graphics troubleshooting). NVIDIA’s technical discussion also identifies video-memory oversubscription and uneven CPU/GPU workloads as sources of stutter (NVIDIA stutter analysis).
Update or roll back deliberately
- Find your graphics card in Task Manager → Performance → GPU or Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Get a driver from the GPU maker: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- If freezes started just after an update, test the prior stable driver. Otherwise, install an appropriate current driver; use the vendor’s clean-install option if offered and relevant.
- Restart, reset custom graphics-control-panel settings to defaults, and test the game again with overlays and recording disabled.
Change one thing at a time so you can tell which test mattered. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities.

- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
Test graphics modes and shader behavior
If the game supports more than one graphics API, such as DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, test another supported option; neither is universally faster or more stable. Some games pause while compiling shaders, especially after a game or driver update, when a new effect appears, or after a shader cache is cleared. A first-run pause can fit that pattern. Repeated pauses in the same place across several runs deserve checks for drivers, game files, and storage as well.

On Windows 11, compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed mode can use Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft also provides per-game GPU preference controls there (Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance). Treat toggling the optimization or GPU preference as a compatibility test, not a guaranteed boost; restart the game after changing it.
3. RAM, VRAM, storage, or low disk space
A game may stutter when system memory is exhausted, video memory is oversubscribed, or assets cannot be read smoothly from storage. Windows may then move data through the page file; a busy or unhealthy drive can add pauses. NVIDIA identifies video-memory oversubscription as a stutter source (NVIDIA stutter analysis). Microsoft advises keeping roughly 10% to 15% of a drive free as general space for swap files and other operations—not as a universal game requirement (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).

Look for the resource spike
- Open Task Manager → Performance while playing.
- During a pause, note memory use, disk active time, GPU dedicated and shared memory, CPU use, and network activity.
- Compare repeated freezes: a disk spike, near-full system memory, and high GPU memory use point to different tests.
Reduce pressure before buying hardware
- If video memory is close to full, lower texture quality or disable a high-resolution texture pack first.
- If system memory is near maximum, close browsers and other heavy applications and test again before considering more RAM.
- If the game is on a slow hard drive and disk activity spikes during asset loading, test it from an SSD if one is available.
- Keep free space on both Windows and game drives; pause downloads, cloud sync, and large updates during a diagnostic run.
- Use the drive maker’s or PC maker’s diagnostic utility if storage health is in question.
Windows Memory Diagnostic can identify some memory faults, but a clean result does not prove every RAM, motherboard, timing, or overclock issue is absent. A failed test or recurring system-wide crashes warrants further memory or professional hardware testing.
4. Overlays, recording, or other background software
Overlays and background tasks can compete for resources or conflict with a game: possible culprits include Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, recording and streaming tools, RGB utilities, browser windows, cloud sync, antivirus scans, and launcher updates. Intel includes disabling background recording as a troubleshooting test (Intel guidance).
Recommended Free Tools
Try a quick isolation test
- Turn off the game’s overlay and overlays from chat, launcher, and GPU software.
- Stop recording or streaming, downloads, and cloud synchronization; close browser windows temporarily.
- Restart the game and see whether the pauses continue.
- If the problem stops, re-enable one item at a time until it returns.
Use a clean boot if the quick test is inconclusive
A Windows clean boot starts with essential drivers and startup programs so you can isolate a background conflict. Microsoft documents this procedure (Microsoft clean-boot instructions):

- Sign in as an administrator, open System Configuration, and select the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable enabled startup items.
- Restart and test the game. If it works, re-enable services or startup items in groups—splitting the list in half can narrow the conflict faster than random testing.
- Restore normal startup after testing, using Microsoft’s instructions. A clean boot is a temporary diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting.
5. Damaged game or Windows files—or an underlying hardware fault
A patch, interrupted download, disk error, or mod can leave a game installation damaged. If one game is affected, verify its files before reinstalling it. Steam recommends file verification among its troubleshooting steps (Steam support).
Verify the game installation
- Steam: Open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Labels may vary with the client version.
- Epic Games Launcher: Open Library, select the three dots beside the game, choose Manage → Verify, and wait for validation to finish. Epic says verification repairs damaged or corrupted files without affecting saved data (Epic Games support).
Verification does not fix a driver, overheating, or a defect in the game itself; some games may also disable or flag mods. Reinstall only if verification fails repeatedly or the launcher continues to report installation errors.
Repair Windows components when broader symptoms justify it
If Windows itself is unstable or system-file corruption is suspected, Microsoft’s supported sequence is DISM followed by System File Checker (Microsoft instructions):

sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100%. - Restart Windows.
These commands repair Windows components; they do not repair faulty RAM, a failing drive, overheating, or a defective GPU.
A practical troubleshooting order
Start with reversible checks and change one variable at a time. This makes the cause easier to identify and avoids unnecessary reinstalls or purchases.
- Restart the PC, then establish whether one game or all games are affected.
- Note whether Windows, audio, mouse movement, and Alt-Tab continue during a freeze.
- Disable overlays and recording, and pause downloads or cloud synchronization.
- Use Task Manager and a monitoring tool to check memory, disk activity, GPU memory, temperatures, and clock speeds when the pause occurs.
- If one game is affected, check its recent updates and verify its files; if all games are affected, prioritize drivers, thermals, memory, storage, and background software.
- If the issue began after a driver update, test a prior stable version; otherwise install the GPU maker’s appropriate driver and restart.
- Try the game’s supported graphics API or windowed mode settings one at a time, then retest.
- Use a clean boot if background conflicts remain plausible. Restore normal startup afterward.
- Use memory, drive, and Windows system-file diagnostics when symptoms point to them; escalate if tests fail or the whole system remains unstable.
When to suspect hardware or ask for help
Prioritize hardware diagnosis if games and Windows both freeze, the PC restarts or shows a blue screen, files repeatedly become corrupted, a memory test reports errors, or drive diagnostics show warnings. Repeated display-driver or hardware errors in Event Viewer can also help a technician narrow the cause. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can stem from hardware, drivers, or software, and recommends checking drivers, disk space, Windows updates, and memory diagnostics (Microsoft troubleshooting guidance).
When contacting a game developer or repair technician, provide the game and version, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, CPU, installed RAM, whether the game is on an HDD or SSD, when the issue began, and whether it affects other games. Include temperatures and memory/disk readings during a freeze, any error code, whether audio and Alt-Tab still work, and whether a clean boot changed the behavior. This is more actionable than reporting only that the game “keeps freezing.”
