For most groups, D&D Beyond Maps is the best place to start: it is the official browser-based virtual tabletop, supports hosting with a free account, and can use D&D Beyond content you own. Roll20 is the strongest general-purpose browser alternative, Fantasy Grounds is the best fit for rules automation and licensed digital books, and Foundry Virtual Tabletop suits technical groups that want self-hosting. The other eight names below are useful candidates, but their September 2026 availability and D&D support should be confirmed before you commit a campaign.
Quick picks
- Best official D&D integration: D&D Beyond Maps.
- Best all-round browser VTT: Roll20.
- Best rules automation and licensed books: Fantasy Grounds.
- Best for self-hosting and deep customization: Foundry Virtual Tabletop.
- Best lightweight options to investigate: Owlbear Rodeo or Tableplop, subject to a current service check.
A virtual tabletop (VTT) provides the shared map, tokens, dice, character sheets and initiative tools that replace a physical table. A complete online D&D setup may also require voice or video chat; not every VTT includes those communication features.

The four strongest choices with current evidence
D&D Beyond Maps: the easiest official starting point
D&D Beyond describes itself as “the official digital toolset and game companion for Dungeons & Dragons – The World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game!” Its Maps page calls Maps “The official D&D VTT” and says it is “fully integrated with DUNGEONS & DRAGONS on D&D BEYOND.” Wizards of the Coast says anyone with a free account can host sessions, and Maps can use D&D Beyond content that the group has purchased.
This is the clearest choice when the DM already owns digital adventures, sourcebooks or other content on D&D Beyond and wants the least separation between character management and the battle map. Start by signing in or creating a free account, opening Maps, creating a campaign and inviting the group. Check which content is available to the host and which access players receive before buying duplicate books. The available information does not establish a universal requirement for every player to buy the same content or maintain a separate paid account.

Roll20: the broadest browser ecosystem
Roll20’s current landing page advertises, “Play D&D and 1,200+ other game systems — free.” It is browser-first, includes mapmaking through integrated Dungeon Scrawl tools, and offers looking-for-group features. That combination makes it a practical choice for a new DM who wants to run D&D without installing a desktop client and may need help finding players.
Roll20 is a general-purpose platform rather than a confirmed catalog of official D&D books in the evidence available here. If licensed adventure content, compendium sharing or automated rules are decisive, inspect the specific marketplace listing and campaign permissions before planning around them. For a homebrew game, the free starting point and large system ecosystem are its main advantages.
Fantasy Grounds: automation and licensed content
Fantasy Grounds states: “Fantasy Grounds is a free D&D virtual tabletop with rules-aware automation, officially licensed Wizards of the Coast books and adventures, and a deep catalog of fifth-edition and classic D&D content.” Its D&D page displayed 875 available products and 880 visible reader books when refreshed on September 15, 2026.
Rank #2
- Embrace Your Inner Hero: Defend Waterdeep and Undermountain from four legendary D&D monsters—Beholder, Displacer Beast, Mimic, and Red Dragon. Team up to protect citizens and outwit these iconic foes.
- Engaging Cooperative Gameplay: Unite family and friends in a thrilling strategy adventure that boosts critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.
- Visually Stunning Components: Featuring a richly illustrated game board, sculpted monster miniatures, hero markers, and a custom d20 for immersive D&D flair.
- Easy to Learn, Endless Variety: Each monster offers unique tactics and challenges, delivering fresh strategies and replayable excitement in every 60-minute session.
- Game Night Ready: For 1–5 players. Includes 1 game board, 4 monster mats and figures, hero badges, citizen standees, dice, cards, and all tokens needed to begin your quest.
The application is free to download, while official books and adventures are sold as digital content. Rules-aware automation can reduce manual calculations and data entry, but the trade-off is a more involved desktop setup than a browser-only VTT. Confirm the supported operating system, license-sharing rules and which player purchases are necessary for the particular campaign before the first session.
Foundry Virtual Tabletop: maximum control for technical groups
Foundry is a self-hosted option aimed at groups that want extensive customization. The host runs the software and manages the game server, while players generally connect remotely. That approach can provide control over modules, settings and presentation, but it also makes the DM responsible for networking, updates, backups and troubleshooting.
Current commercial terms and the present D&D catalog were not established in the available information. Treat Foundry as a strong technical candidate, not as a confirmed bargain or an automatically licensed D&D solution. Verify the current purchase model, official-content availability and the maintenance status of any D&D game system or module before committing.

Eight additional names to check before choosing
Owlbear Rodeo
Owlbear Rodeo has historically been positioned as a lightweight browser map-and-token tool. It is worth checking when a group wants quick visual play with little rules overhead. Confirm that the current service is operating, that its present plan supports your group size, and that it offers the D&D sheets or automation you actually need.
Tabletop Simulator
Tabletop Simulator is a three-dimensional sandbox designed to feel like a physical table. It can suit groups that enjoy manipulating terrain and pieces, but D&D often requires additional workshop assets, scripting or manual character tracking. Verify the current D&D workflow, workshop requirements and whether each participant needs a separate copy.

Shard Tabletop is a D&D-focused candidate rather than a recommendation with confirmed September 2026 details. Check that the service is active, that the ruleset matches the edition you play, and that its licensing permits the books or character options your campaign uses.
Rank #4
- ESCAPE THE DUNGEON, SOLVE THE MYSTERY: Dungeons and Dragons: Bedlam in Neverwinter offers all of the excitement of the beloved D and D game in one epic adventure, told in a 3-part escape room board game
- 3-IN-1 D and D COOPERATIVE MYSTERY GAME: Players join forces to investigate a series of alarming disappear-ances. Work together to track down clues and solve the mystery at the end of each act. For 2-6 players
- CREATE CHARACTERS, BATTLE MONSTERS: Choose a Race, Class, and Starting Weapon to create your character. Then collect loot and battle D and D monsters on the hunt for an evil mage and his dangerous cult
- SOLVE FANTASTICAL PUZZLES: Don’t split the party. Work together to decipher puzzles, from wordplay problems to multi-card visual riddles. Solve them to unlock new items, locations, and clues
- DYNAMIC GAMEBOARD: Players move their figures around the board exploring Neverwinter. The board builds and changes, revealing mysterious places and clues as players solve puzzles that unlock locations
Tableplop
Tableplop has been associated with a simple browser VTT. Before relying on it for a long campaign, confirm current uptime, free-plan limits, player accounts, map tools and whether character sheets or initiative are built in.
Let’s Role
Let’s Role is another browser VTT candidate. Its usefulness depends on current D&D sheet support, automation depth and pricing, all of which should be checked on the live service before the DM imports a campaign.
Astral TableTop
Astral TableTop is a historical VTT entry. Because service continuity is not established here, do not use it as the foundation for a new campaign until you have confirmed that logins, hosting, exports and support still work.
Best Value
- THE START OF A LEGENDARY D&D ADVENTURE—Create your first character, fight monsters, save your friends, and embark on thrilling quests. This is the start of something legendary. This is D&D for everyone.
- FAST FUN FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY—Heroes of the Borderlands is playable in bite-sized, hour-long sessions, perfect for game night with friends and family.
- SET UP AND PLAY IN MINUTES—Get straight to playing with speedy character creation, a handy quick-start guide, and intuitive, learn-as-you-play components.
- GO ON EPIC QUESTS—Three adventure booklets provide dozens of encounters involving combat, social interaction, and exploration.
- CHOOSE YOUR WAY TO PLAY—Do you fight the goblin, try to reason with it, or sneak past it undetected?
AboveVTT
AboveVTT has been associated with D&D Beyond workflows and browser play. Compatibility can change when either service updates, so test a complete encounter—including maps, tokens, character sheets and initiative—before inviting a full group.
Dungeon Alchemist or another current map tool
Dungeon Alchemist belongs in this list only if your definition of “play online” includes preparing maps with a separate VTT. A map-making program is not automatically a game host, character-sheet system or rules engine. Confirm export formats and plan for a second service if the tool cannot run the live session.
How to choose the right site
Choose by your content library
- Already invested in D&D Beyond books? Begin with Maps so the host can use eligible purchased content in the same ecosystem.
- Want official Wizards of the Coast digital books inside the VTT? Compare the Fantasy Grounds catalog and license terms for your exact adventures.
- Running mostly homebrew? Roll20 or a lightweight map tool may avoid paying for content you will not use.
Choose by technical tolerance
- Lowest friction: a browser platform such as Maps or Roll20.
- More automation: Fantasy Grounds, accepting a desktop installation and preparation work.
- Maximum control: Foundry, if someone in the group can host, update and troubleshoot a server.
Check the whole group, not just the DM
Before session zero, test every player’s device, browser or application, microphone, account access and connection. Verify who can see compendium material, who must buy a license or book, and whether the campaign can be exported or backed up. A platform that looks ideal for the DM can fail if two players cannot run it or if the required content is locked to a different account.
Run a short technical rehearsal
- Create a throwaway campaign and add one map, two tokens and a sample character.
- Invite one player on the least powerful supported device.
- Test movement, dice, initiative, fog or lighting, chat and any rules automation you plan to use.
- Check how you recover if the host disconnects, a module breaks or a player loses access to a purchased book.
- Only then build the full adventure and commit the group to the platform.
What “free” means on an online D&D site
A free account, a free application and free access to official books are different things. D&D Beyond Maps documents free-account hosting but does not make every digital book free. Roll20 advertises free D&D play, while optional platform features and content may have separate terms. Fantasy Grounds lets you download the application without charge, but its licensed books and adventures are paid digital products. For Foundry and the eight additional candidates, confirm current pricing, hosting costs, content licenses and player requirements directly before budgeting a campaign.
Bottom line for a new campaign
Start with D&D Beyond Maps when official integration and a browser-based setup matter most. Pick Roll20 for a flexible general-purpose browser VTT and built-in group-finding tools. Pick Fantasy Grounds when rules automation and licensed D&D books justify an installed application. Pick Foundry only when the group is comfortable managing self-hosting and verifying the current D&D system and licensing situation. Treat the remaining entries as options to investigate, not guaranteed active services, until their September 2026 status is confirmed.
