Can You Mine With a PS3? What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why It Isn’t Profitable in 2026

PS3 mining is technically possible only under narrow Linux conditions. Learn which models matter, why the RSX is not a normal mining GPU, how costs work, and why experimentation—not profit—is the sensible use.

Yes—but only as a limited experiment. A PlayStation 3 can theoretically run cryptocurrency-mining code through a compatible Linux installation, yet it is not a practical or profitable Bitcoin miner in 2026. The normal PS3 operating system is not a general-purpose Linux desktop, many consoles cannot run the historical “Other OS” feature, and modern ASIC miners outperform the Cell processor by an enormous margin.

What “mining with a PS3” actually means

Mining can mean several different things: calculating proof-of-work hashes, connecting to a pool, attempting to mine Bitcoin, running an altcoin miner, or simply demonstrating the concept with a benchmark. A PS3 may perform the first task without being capable of earning meaningful rewards. Hashing ability alone does not make a device competitive.

The realistic modern use is education: studying the Cell processor, reproducing historical software, or measuring how a legacy console handles parallel workloads.

Why the PS3’s Cell processor attracted attention

The Cell Broadband Engine combined a general-purpose Power Processor Element (PPE) with Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). Its SIMD-oriented design could be effective for carefully structured, parallel numerical work, but programmers had to manage local-store memory and explicit data movement rather than relying on ordinary desktop-style threading. Sony’s Cell programming primer explains those SPE and SIMD concepts.

Sony Playstation 3 160GB System (Renewed)
  • Internet Ready With Built-in Wi-Fi with a Cell Broadband Engine Advanced Microprocessor
  • When starting up the system for the first time, hold the power button until a "screen display" message shows up on screen. Select the desired output, and the system will startup normally.
  • 160GB system
  • Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
  • The best high-definition viewing experience available

That architecture made SHA-256 experimentation interesting. A historical open-source project attempted Bitcoin mining on PS3 Cell hardware, but it is archival code, not a maintained 2026 miner or evidence of profitability: PS3-Bitcoin-Mining on GitHub.

Which PS3 models can run Linux?

Model and firmware are the first feasibility test. Sony’s archived Open Platform documentation says the feature was unavailable on CECH-2000-series Slim consoles and later models. On earlier compatible systems, system software 3.21 disabled it. Current official PS3 software documentation (version 4.80 or later) does not restore the feature.

Console situation Linux/Other OS implication
Original “fat” model that retained Other OS support Potentially suitable for a historical Linux experiment, subject to firmware and hardware condition.
Earlier compatible model updated to 3.21 or later Open Platform was disabled by that update.
CECH-2000-series Slim or later Open Platform was not available according to Sony’s documentation; do not assume Linux support.

Identify the full CECH model number from the console label or system-information screen before changing anything. Do not blindly update a potentially compatible console: Sony’s Open Platform documentation describes these restrictions. The current user guide is at PlayStation’s PS3 manual site.

  • Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.

Can the standard PS3 system mine?

Not in the ordinary consumer sense. The standard XMB interface does not provide a normal way to install arbitrary mining software. A workable historical route involved creating a Linux partition, installing a boot loader, and selecting the “Other OS” boot flag, as described in Sony’s archived PS3 Linux guide.

That process could format the internal drive and erase stored data. A compatible keyboard, display, network connection, and a PowerPC/Cell-capable Linux environment would also be required. Older references to Yellow Dog Linux, Fedora, openSUSE, or Ubuntu are historical; they should not be mistaken for currently maintained PS3 distributions.

Could the PS3’s RSX graphics chip mine?

Do not treat the RSX as a modern CUDA or OpenCL mining GPU. The documented PS3 Linux environment operated under a hypervisor, and its kernel documentation states that Linux did not have direct GPU access or ordinary hardware-accelerated graphics in that setup: PS3 Linux kernel overview.

PlayStation 3 Slim Console 120GB (Old Model) (Renewed)
  • HDMI + Bravia Sync functionality that provides both 1080p output resolution.
  • A new 33% slimmer, 36% lighter PlayStation 3 entertainment system that is also more energy efficient.
  • Includes a Dualshock 3 wireless controller and a built-in 120GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for connectivity anywhere and multiple media format compatibility.
  • Free membership and access to all the events, as well as game, movie, TV and other media content available on the PlayStation Network (PSN).

Consequently, a responsible experiment should be framed as PPE/SPE (CPU-side Cell) computation. Claims that installing Linux automatically turns the RSX into a general-purpose mining GPU are misleading unless tied to a specific, reproducible homebrew implementation.

How a PS3 mining experiment would work

  1. Identify the CECH model. Confirm the exact model rather than relying on “fat” or “Slim” appearance.
  2. Check eligibility before updating. Verify whether the console originally supported Other OS and whether its firmware preserves a workable route.
  3. Back up data. Historical installation procedures could reformat the hard drive.
  4. Install a compatible PowerPC Linux environment. Expect obsolete packages and documentation.
  5. Confirm the architecture. In Linux, commands such as uname -a, cat /proc/cpuinfo, and free -m can identify the kernel, processor, and memory. Output varies by distribution and model.
  6. Build compatible software. Most current miners target x86-64 or ARM. Cell-specific code may require an older PowerPC compiler, SPE libraries, patches, and manual PPE/SPE configuration. The historical PS3 Bitcoin project is better treated as a code reference than a turnkey application.
  7. Benchmark before joining a pool. Record hash rate, temperatures, stability, wall power, and accepted or rejected shares. A benchmark is not proof that pool submissions work.
  8. Calculate net economics. Use measured wall power and measured hash rate, not generic console specifications.

Common failure branches

  • No Other OS menu: the model may be unsupported, or an update may have disabled the feature. Stop rather than forcing an unverified firmware change.
  • Compilation failure: check for an x86-64-only binary, missing Cell SDK components, obsolete dependencies, or an incompatible linker.
  • Zero accepted shares: verify the algorithm, endianness, work format, wallet, stratum protocol, and pool configuration. Some programs are benchmarks, not valid pool miners.
  • Overheating or shutdowns: stop immediately. Dust, aging thermal compound, a failing fan, or poor airflow can make continuous high load unsafe.

Can a PS3 mine Bitcoin?

It can theoretically calculate Bitcoin’s SHA-256 work, and historical Cell software demonstrates that possibility. Economically, however, Bitcoin mining is an ASIC market. Bitmain’s current listings include the S23 Hyd at 580 TH/s and 5,510 W (9.5 J/TH), the U3S23H at 1,160 TH/s and 11,020 W (9.5 J/TH), and the S21 XP Hyd at 473 TH/s and 5,676 W (12 J/TH): Bitmain product listings.

A precise PS3-to-ASIC multiplier would be misleading without a reproducible PS3 benchmark specifying the model, active SPEs, compiler, software, thermal conditions, and accepted-share methodology. The important conclusion does not depend on that number: a legacy general-purpose processor cannot compete with purpose-built machines measured in hundreds of terahashes per second.

Could it mine another cryptocurrency?

Possibly in principle, but algorithm and software support decide the answer.

Algorithm category PS3 outlook
SHA-256 Technically executable; commercially overwhelmed by ASICs.
Scrypt Dedicated Scrypt ASICs make a console uncompetitive.
Memory-hard or CPU-oriented A port may run, but PowerPC compatibility, limited memory, and efficiency remain serious barriers.
GPU-oriented Poor fit because documented PS3 Linux does not expose the RSX as a normal compute GPU.
Modern 64-bit or large-memory algorithms Software may fail to run before profitability is considered.

Never select a coin from an old tutorial without checking that its network still exists, its mining client supports PowerPC/Cell, its stratum protocol is compatible, its pool accepts shares, and it has usable wallet and liquidity support. Bitmain’s calculator shows why economics are algorithm-specific; it covers multiple algorithms and warns that estimates are only references based on changing network conditions.

Is PS3 mining profitable?

For a normal household, treat it as economically unviable. The basic calculations are:

Net profit per day = mining revenue − electricity − pool fees − other operating costs

Power cost per day = (watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × electricity price per kWh

For illustration only, assuming 200 W and electricity at $0.16/kWh gives 0.2 × 24 × $0.16 = $0.768 per day before revenue, hardware, cooling, maintenance, or failure risk. Two hundred watts is not a universal PS3 measurement; consumption varies by model, software load, and measurement point.

Include the console’s purchase or collector value, hard-drive and thermal maintenance, fan wear, downtime, pool and withdrawal fees, network difficulty, block-subsidy changes, and cryptocurrency volatility. Gross calculator revenue is not profit. The AntPool site (https://ap.bitmain.com/) and calculators cannot turn unsupported software or negligible hash rate into a viable payout.

Better choices for each goal

Goal More suitable option
Learn Cell architecture or reproduce history Use the PS3 as a retro-computing project and accept that software setup is archival.
Learn current mining software Use a modern PC with maintained operating systems, compilers, and monitoring tools.
Mine Bitcoin Evaluate a modern ASIC only after entering electricity, cooling, electrical infrastructure, shipping, taxes, and hosting costs into a current calculator.
Gain cryptocurrency exposure without hardware Buying cryptocurrency directly avoids equipment, heat, electricity, and maintenance, but remains a financial decision with price risk.
Demonstrate proof of work Run a local hash benchmark without joining a pool or expecting rewards.

ASIC comparison data can be researched at ASIC Miner Value, but estimates change with coin prices, difficulty, electricity, fees, and hardware availability. Vendor prices are not delivered costs.

Final verdict

Use case PS3 suitability
Learn Cell architecture Good
Reproduce a historical mining experiment Possible, with substantial setup risk
Mine Bitcoin profitably No
Use the RSX like a modern mining GPU No
Earn meaningful cryptocurrency from one console No
Preserve a valuable PS3 Mining may be a poor trade because of heat, wear, and firmware risk

The Bottom Line

A PS3 can hash under a narrow, model- and firmware-dependent Linux setup, but in 2026 it belongs in the laboratory, classroom, or retro-computing shelf—not a profit-making Bitcoin mine.
