The same update made it easier to back up existing captures to OneDrive or an external drive and added an option to back up future captures to OneDrive automatically. It applies to Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S consoles.
If a clip matters, do not leave the only copy on the Xbox Network. Move it to another destination, then verify that the copy opens before relying on it.
What changed in Xbox Game DVR
The update combines a retention-policy change with a better backup workflow. Microsoft says captures stored on the Xbox Network will be deleted after 90 days. The Captures app can identify items approaching deletion and provides tools for moving or copying them elsewhere.
OneDrive uploads were possible before this update. The significant change was a simpler bulk-backup process and the ability to configure automatic backup for future captures. Microsoft’s announcement also connects the workflow with Clipchamp, so captures saved in OneDrive can be edited on a Windows PC.

The policy concerns captures managed through the Xbox console ecosystem. It should not automatically be read as a rule for every Windows Game Bar recording, phone capture, or third-party recording service.

The 90-day warning
“Deleted after 90 days” means Xbox Network captures are not a permanent archive. Microsoft does not say that every file disappears at an identical time of day or that the countdown is always calculated from the moment of creation. The safe interpretation is simple: any capture marked for upcoming deletion should be backed up promptly.
OneDrive copies are governed by the storage and account rules of OneDrive; they are not automatically subject to the Xbox Network’s 90-day retention statement. An external drive is controlled by you, but can be lost, damaged, or fail.

- Select individual files or use the bulk-management options, then confirm and wait for the transfer.
Labels can differ with console software versions, account state, or regional rollout. If the wording has changed, look for the Captures app under Apps and its backup or storage-management prompts.
Choose OneDrive
OneDrive is convenient when you want to move footage to a PC or phone, share a link, or continue into an editing workflow. Make sure the Microsoft account signed into Xbox is the account whose OneDrive you intend to use.
Choose an external drive
An external drive avoids a recurring cloud-storage charge and is useful for a large local library or slow internet connection. It is offline and quick to access, but it is not an off-site backup. Valuable footage is safer with both a local copy and a cloud copy.
Enable automatic backup for future captures
- Open the Captures app using the same Xbox-button path.
- Open its backup or storage-management settings.
- Select OneDrive and enable automatic backup for future captures if the option is shown.
- Confirm the Microsoft account and OneDrive destination.
- Create a test screenshot or short clip and check that it arrives in OneDrive.
Automatic does not mean instantaneous. Upload duration depends on clip size, upload bandwidth, the console’s connection and state, and OneDrive availability. Large videos can remain pending for a while, and a full account can stop new uploads.

Verify a backup before deleting the Xbox copy
- Check that Xbox and OneDrive are using the same Microsoft account.
- Open the OneDrive app or website and sort by recently added, or search for the capture filename.
- Verify at least one screenshot and one video, if both types were backed up.
- Play the video or download it to another device to confirm that it is complete and usable.
- Only then consider removing the Xbox Network copy.
Do not assume a visible filename proves a successful upload. If a file is missing, check the OneDrive recycle bin, confirm the console had internet access, and allow time for synchronization.
OneDrive storage determines how far automatic backup goes
Cloud backup is limited by the Microsoft account’s allowance. Microsoft support material lists 5 GB for free users, 1 TB for Microsoft 365 Personal, and 6 TB total for Microsoft 365 Family, generally allocated as 1 TB per person. Check Microsoft’s live plan pages for current terms and pricing.
| Capture habit | Likely implication |
|---|---|
| Occasional screenshots | 5 GB may be comfortable for a modest collection. |
| Frequent gameplay clips | Video can consume 5 GB quickly; monitor available space. |
| Automatic backup of a large library | You may need a larger allowance, regular cleanup, or an external archive. |
OneDrive is a longer-term destination, not an unlimited or infallible archive. Accidental deletion, account-access problems, and service-policy changes remain possible.
Editing backed-up clips with Clipchamp
Microsoft Clipchamp’s personal workflow can import media from Xbox and OneDrive. That lets you download or edit captures on a Windows PC or in the browser, then export finished videos to OneDrive or supported services such as Google Drive, YouTube, TikTok, Dropbox, and LinkedIn, subject to account and platform conditions.

Clipchamp has a free personal tier with core editing tools. Eligible Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium subscribers receive additional premium features. OneDrive backup does not require a Clipchamp subscription; backup and editing are separate parts of the workflow.
Clipchamp is a follow-on editor, not a replacement for a full native Xbox editing suite. If it cannot find a capture, confirm that the OneDrive upload is complete, check browser permissions and account identity, or download the file locally and import that copy. Microsoft’s Clipchamp overview explains supported imports, while its sharing guidance lists export destinations.
Importing 4K footage is not the same as unrestricted 4K export: Microsoft lists 4K export for specified paid or work/education tiers at 3840p and 70 Mbps. See the current 4K support page for eligibility.

Troubleshooting common backup problems
A capture is marked for deletion
Open Captures, identify the flagged item, and back it up immediately. Do not wait for the last day of the retention window.
The upload went to the wrong account
Check the signed-in Microsoft account on Xbox and the account open in OneDrive. An account mismatch can make a completed upload appear missing.
OneDrive is full
Check available storage, remove unwanted files, or move the archive to external storage. Automatic backup cannot continue beyond the account’s allowance.
The file appears but will not play
Download it and test it on another device. If it is incomplete, repeat the transfer while the console has a stable connection and keep the Xbox copy until the replacement is verified.
Clipchamp cannot see the media
Confirm that synchronization has finished, then import from OneDrive again or use a local download. Clipchamp’s media-storage explanations are available at Microsoft Support.
A practical creator workflow
- Capture on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Enable automatic OneDrive backup if your bandwidth and storage allow it.
- Periodically verify uploads and download important originals to a PC.
- Edit in Clipchamp or another editor.
- Publish finished highlights where appropriate, while retaining the original files.
- Keep a second archive on an external drive for irreplaceable footage.
Readers who only take occasional screenshots may need no paid service. Frequent video creators should plan around upload speed and cloud capacity rather than assuming automatic backup is unlimited.
