Valve announced the Steam Machine, Steam Frame VR headset and redesigned Steam Controller on November 12, 2025. The original “early 2026” target is now outdated: the Steam Controller launched on May 4, 2026 at $99, Steam Machine configurations are listed from $1,049 and the Steam Frame’s final retail price and availability still require confirmation from Valve’s live store listing.
Valve’s three-device Steam hardware plan
This was a coordinated expansion of Steam hardware rather than three unrelated products. Valve is tying SteamOS, Steam libraries, PC streaming and configurable input into a single ecosystem:
| Product | What it is | Primary use | Current status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine | Compact SteamOS desktop PC | TV or desk gaming with PC flexibility | 512GB and 2TB configurations listed; June 2026 timing reported |
| Steam Frame | Standalone-capable wireless PC-VR headset | Local VR, streamed PC VR and some flat-screen games | Summer 2026 target reported; final price and retail status not established here |
| Steam Controller | Wireless controller with touchpads and Steam Input | SteamOS, Windows and other Steam-compatible devices | Launched May 4, 2026 at $99, according to contemporary coverage |
Valve’s original announcement and product details are documented by Gematsu and in Valve’s announcement video on YouTube.
Steam Machine: a small SteamOS PC, not a closed console
Steam Machine is a roughly six-inch cube built around SteamOS 3, Valve’s Arch Linux-based operating system with a KDE Plasma desktop. Users can install applications or another operating system, so it is closer to a small-form-factor gaming PC than a PlayStation- or Xbox-style appliance.

Hardware specifications
- Semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads, up to 4.8GHz and a 30W TDP
- Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units, up to a 2.45GHz sustained clock and a 110W GPU TDP
- 16GB DDR5 system memory and 8GB GDDR6 VRAM
- 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD, plus microSD expansion
- Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and gigabit Ethernet
- Built-in wireless adapter for Steam Controllers and an internal power supply
Valve says the machine supports ray tracing and targets 4K gaming at 60 frames per second with FSR. That is a platform target, not a guarantee for every game, and Valve’s comparisons such as “more than six times” Steam Deck performance are positioning claims rather than universal independent benchmarks.
Ports and display output
- DisplayPort 1.4
- HDMI 2.0
- USB-C
- Four USB-A ports
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
Valve lists output capability of up to 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz over DisplayPort, and up to 4K at 120Hz over HDMI. Those figures describe display-output limits; they do not mean modern games will render at those settings.
Configurations and prices
| Configuration | Observed U.S. price | Included items |
|---|---|---|
| 512GB | $1,049 | Steam Machine; controller not included |
| 2TB | $1,428 | Steam Controller, red-fabric faceplate and walnut faceplate |
These prices appeared on Steam’s product pages: 512GB listing and 2TB bundle. Valve’s hardware hub is Steam Machine. A June 30 launch and reservation process were reported by Gematsu; a store-page June 2026 date should not automatically be treated as a guaranteed fulfillment date.
Who should consider it?
- Steam users wanting a console-like TV interface without giving up desktop mode or another operating system
- Players who need substantially more performance than Steam Deck
- Households already using Steam Input and Steam Controller hardware
The difficult comparison is value. At $1,049 before accessories, Steam Machine competes with self-built PCs, boutique small-form-factor Windows systems and consoles. It is a poor fit if the priority is the lowest cost, simple component upgrades, unrestricted Windows compatibility or maximum performance per dollar.

Why the wireless adapter matters
The included USB adapter creates a dedicated 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E link between the headset and gaming PC. Steam Frame’s second radio handles the normal home network. Separating those paths is intended to reduce congestion from household traffic, poor router placement, walls and interference, but it cannot remove wireless latency or video compression in every room or game.
Foveated streaming
Eye tracking lets Steam Frame send more detail to the area where the user is looking. Valve calls this foveated streaming and says it can substantially improve effective image quality and bandwidth use. That is different from ordinary foveated rendering, and Valve’s claims should not be read as a tenfold increase in rendered frame rate.
Local software versus streamed PC VR
The ARM-based headset can run native Linux software and Android applications, while Proton and FEX provide routes for some Windows software. A mobile-class chipset is still far less powerful than a gaming PC:
- Lightweight, well-optimized VR titles may run locally.
- Demanding PC VR games are expected to benefit from streaming from a gaming PC.
- “Can run” does not mean PC-quality settings or universal compatibility.
- Steam Frame Verified should help identify the expected standalone experience.
Half-Life: Alyx is an example of a demanding title that would generally make sense as a streamed PC-VR game, not proof of blanket compatibility. Steam Frame is not a complete replacement for a gaming PC, and its monochrome passthrough is not equivalent to a modern full-color mixed-reality system. It also does not currently offer controller-free hand tracking.

Controllers
The included Steam Frame Controllers combine VR tracking with conventional controls: A/B/X/Y buttons, a D-pad, magnetic TMR thumbsticks, triggers, bumpers, grip buttons, capacitive finger sensing, motion tracking and haptics. Valve specifies approximately 40 hours of battery life from one AA battery per controller. Their ability to play ordinary flat-screen Steam games is a central part of the design.
Availability
Valve initially said early 2026, then shifted the target to summer 2026. The reviewed material does not establish a final retail price or an unambiguous consumer release date. Check Valve’s current hardware page at Steam hardware before treating Steam Frame as available or placing an order.
Steam Controller: a new design for Steam Input
The 2026 Steam Controller is a redesign, not a reissue of Valve’s 2015 model. It combines conventional sticks, buttons, triggers and bumpers with touchpads, haptics and Steam Input configuration.
What it does
- Wireless PC and SteamOS operation
- Touchpads alongside analog sticks and standard controls
- Steam Input layouts, including community configurations
- Direct pairing with Steam Machine through its integrated wireless adapter
- Remote wake capability for Steam Machine
- Use with Steam Deck and other Steam-enabled devices, subject to the relevant connection and software setup
Valve says one Steam Machine can pair with up to four Steam Controllers. Compatibility is aimed at games that support the Steam Overlay, a broader category than games advertising native controller support; some titles may require a community layout or manual configuration.
The controller launched on May 4, 2026 at $99 according to contemporary coverage from Engadget. Verify the current Valve store listing before buying because the reviewed material did not include a directly opened official controller product page.

Why the schedule changed
- November 12, 2025: Valve announced all three products for early 2026 without prices.
- February 4, 2026: Valve cited memory and storage shortages while it revisited pricing and shipping schedules; its stated goal at that point remained the first half of the year. The update was reported by ResetEra.
- May 4, 2026: Steam Controller launched at $99, according to contemporary reporting.
- June 2026: Steam Machine configurations and prices appeared, while Valve and reporting moved the Machine and Frame toward a summer window.
- August 18, 2026: Steam Frame’s exact retail status still needs to be stated from Valve’s current listing rather than inferred from the earlier announcement.
How the products fit together
Valve’s intended pipeline is straightforward: Steam Machine can act as a powerful home host PC, Steam Frame can stream VR from it over the dedicated wireless link, and Steam Controller can provide configurable living-room input. Steam Deck and other Steam clients can join the same library and streaming ecosystem.
That integration is the main reason to consider the family together. The devices are not interchangeable: Steam Machine is fixed home hardware, Steam Frame is a VR client with limited local performance, and Steam Controller is an input device whose value depends heavily on Steam Input and the Steam Overlay.
Who should buy now, and who should wait?
Steam Machine
Buyers who want SteamOS in the living room and accept PC pricing can evaluate the listed configurations now. Wait if upgradeability, Windows compatibility or the best performance per dollar matters more than Valve’s integrated interface.
Steam Frame
Wait for a confirmed Valve price, shipping date, regional availability, warranty and independent testing if you need a known product today. It is most compelling for PC-VR users who value wireless streaming, eye-tracked foveated streaming and one headset that can also run some local and flat-screen software.
Steam Controller
It is the clearest buy for Steam users who enjoy custom layouts, play older PC games or plan to use Steam Machine on a television. A conventional low-cost gamepad is a better fit if you do not want configuration overhead or touchpads.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Bottom line
Valve is turning Steam from a storefront into a connected hardware platform. Steam Machine is the living-room SteamOS PC, Steam Frame is the wireless Steam-VR gateway whose final retail details remain the least certain, and Steam Controller is the ecosystem’s configurable universal input device. The right choice depends on whether your priority is home PC gaming, wireless VR or flexible Steam Input—not on treating the three products as one replacement for every existing device.
