It delivered extended looks at South of Midnight, DOOM: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, revealed NINJA GAIDEN 4 as the planned fourth presentation, and ended with the immediate release of NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black. The event was scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. UK time.
Here is what was actually announced, what was demonstrated in more depth, where each game was confirmed to be playable, and how Game Pass fits into the lineup.

Xbox said the games shown supported Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming, while noting that the Game Pass catalog varies by plan. Play Anywhere generally means a qualifying digital purchase on Xbox or Windows includes the other platform, with shared saves and achievements; it should not be confused with cross-save claims made for a particular game on other platforms.
Xbox’s official recap is the source for the event’s dates, lineup and platform announcements.

NINJA GAIDEN 4 was the surprise new game
The pre-show announcement named three games and promised a visit to a surprise studio. That fourth segment turned out to be NINJA GAIDEN 4, developed through a partnership between Team NINJA and PlatinumGames with Xbox Game Studios Publishing.
A new hero in a ruined Tokyo
The game moves the series to a devastated near-future Tokyo and introduces Yakumo as a new protagonist. Ryu Hayabusa returns as a playable character, linking the new story to the franchise’s history rather than replacing its longtime ninja entirely.
Bloodbind Ninjutsu and returning techniques
Yakumo’s new Bloodbind Ninjutsu system sits alongside familiar techniques such as Flying Swallow and Izuna Drop. The combination is intended to pair Team NINJA’s established combat language with PlatinumGames’ action expertise; that is the partnership’s stated positioning, not a guarantee about the finished game’s quality.

Release, platforms and subscription access
Xbox announced a Fall 2025 target, without giving a specific day. The listed platforms were Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, cloud gaming and PlayStation 5. It was also announced as a day-one Game Pass title, subject to the applicable plan’s catalog.
NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black shadow-dropped
The other major surprise was NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black, a graphically remastered edition of the 2008 action game. It became available immediately on January 23, 2025, the same day as the showcase, for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, and was included with Game Pass from launch.
Ryu Hayabusa returns with the Dragon Sword, while Momiji, Ayane and Rachel are additional playable characters. Xbox’s wording is “graphically remastered”; calling it a full remake goes beyond the official description. The release gave players a playable Ninja Gaiden experience immediately while they waited for the newly announced fourth entry.

South of Midnight received its date and a fuller story look
South of Midnight comes from Compulsion Games, the Xbox-owned studio behind Contrast and We Happy Few. The presentation showed more than its earlier announcement: Hazel’s emerging abilities, the game’s combat and its hand-crafted visual style.
Hazel becomes a Weaver
The third-person action-adventure is set in a darkly magical version of the American Deep South. Hazel discovers that she is a Weaver, giving her powers tied to repairing supernatural disturbances and confronting creatures drawn from Southern folklore. The showcase emphasized her relationships with those mythical beings and the story’s Southern Gothic tone.
April release and edition details
Xbox announced April 8, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through the Xbox app, Steam and cloud gaming, with day-one Game Pass availability. Windows Central reported that the Premium Edition offered up to five days of early access beginning April 3; that paid early-access period was separate from the base Game Pass entitlement. Xbox also highlighted Play Anywhere support, while Windows Central’s recap described cross-entitlements and cross-saves in its coverage.

DOOM: The Dark Ages showed a heavier kind of Slayer combat
id Software presented DOOM: The Dark Ages as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal—the third modern entry and a cinematic origin story for the Slayer, not a direct sequel to Eternal.
Medieval-inspired warfare
The footage moved through a medieval-inspired setting and focused on the loop of combat, exploration and story. The new Shield Saw was the most conspicuous weapon, combining defense and offense, while the overall design looked heavier and more grounded than DOOM Eternal’s stronger emphasis on aerial movement and constant mobility.
Accessibility and launch platforms
id Software also discussed accessibility and approachability options intended to let more players tune the experience. The announced release date was May 15, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through the Xbox app, Steam and PlayStation 5. It was confirmed as a day-one Game Pass release. Its PlayStation 5 availability means it should not be described as an Xbox exclusive.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 explained its reactive turn-based system
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the most distinct genre change in the lineup. It is a turn-based RPG from debut studio Sandfall Interactive, with Kepler Interactive identified by Windows Central as publisher; it was not developed or published by Xbox.
Fantasy France and the Expedition
The game uses a fantasy version of late-19th-century France, presented with a strong painterly art direction. The Developer_Direct segment showed the overworld map, the world’s visual influences and how the team was building its setting.
Turn-based decisions with real-time reactions
Sandfall calls the combat system “Reactive Turn-Based.” It retains party planning and turn order, but asks the player to respond during attacks and defenses rather than simply selecting commands and waiting for animations to finish. The presentation’s point was the contrast between familiar turn-based structure and active timing elements; it did not establish that every encounter uses the same input sequence.
Release and Game Pass
Xbox announced April 24, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC through the Xbox app, with day-one Game Pass inclusion. The event’s Xbox platform list did not establish every other storefront or console version, so those should be checked against Sandfall or publisher information rather than assumed from the Xbox announcement.

What the Developer_Direct did not show
Avowed was not one of the four main Developer_Direct presentations. Xbox mentioned it afterward as the next major Xbox release, with a February 18, 2025 launch date and day-one Game Pass availability. That reference did not turn it into a Developer_Direct segment.
The event was also not intended to be a complete list of Xbox’s 2025 releases. Xbox described the lineup as a selection, so the absence of another announced game should not be read as a cancellation or a claim that it was not coming that year.
Quick Recap
What the event changed for players
- New information: NINJA GAIDEN 4 was revealed, and NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black released immediately.
- Firm dates: South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and DOOM: The Dark Ages received April or May 2025 dates, while NINJA GAIDEN 4 remained a Fall target.
- Access options: The lineup leaned heavily on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Play Anywhere, cloud gaming and day-one Game Pass, but catalog access depends on the subscriber’s plan.
- Not all exclusives: DOOM: The Dark Ages and NINJA GAIDEN 4 were also announced for PlayStation 5, and Clair Obscur came from an external studio and publisher.
