Microsoft’s Next-Gen Xbox May Drop the Multiplayer Paywall—but It’s Unconfirmed

Microsoft has confirmed that it is developing Project Helix, a next-generation Xbox designed to play Xbox console and PC games. It has not confirmed that online multiplayer for paid games will be free. That possibility comes from an October 2025 report, so it remains a reported plan—not a promise buyers should count on.

Where the multiplayer-paywall claim came from

In October 2025, Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported that Microsoft was considering removing the paid online-multiplayer requirement on its next Xbox. Thurrott summarized the report as part of a more PC-like console strategy: if the device can play PC games from other storefronts, charging a separate Xbox subscription for multiplayer on Xbox games could feel like an inconsistent restriction. Thurrott’s report is coverage of that claim, not a Microsoft announcement.

The distinction matters: Microsoft has now confirmed the next-generation project, but the official announcement did not confirm a change to multiplayer subscriptions. Treat “no multiplayer paywall” as unverified unless Microsoft states the policy itself.

What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix

On March 11, 2026, Microsoft announced Project Helix, the name for its next-generation first-party Xbox console. Microsoft says it is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games, and that it is working with AMD on a custom system-on-chip.

  • Microsoft says Xbox mode for Windows 11 is planned to begin rolling out in select markets in April 2026.
  • The announcement describes access to games through purchases, Game Pass and other leading storefronts; it does not name every supported store or promise that every PC game will run.

The announcement does not specify a retail price, consumer release date, final hardware specifications or a multiplayer-subscription policy.

What “dropping the paywall” would—and would not—mean

On current Xbox consoles, paid online multiplayer is generally a Game Pass benefit. Microsoft’s Game Pass Core page lists online console multiplayer among its benefits and displays a $9.99 monthly recurring price. Prices and plan lineups can vary by region and change over time.

There is already an important exception: Microsoft says multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player, without a paid multiplayer subscription. Its plan-comparison page makes that distinction.

Situation What the reported change would mean
Paid Xbox-native game bought separately If adopted as reported, a player might not need an additional Xbox subscription just to play online. Microsoft has not confirmed this rule.
Free-to-play Xbox game Multiplayer is already available without a paid Xbox multiplayer subscription.
Game Pass game Free multiplayer would not necessarily remove the subscription needed to access a Game Pass game in the first place.
PC game from Steam or another PC storefront PC games typically do not require an Xbox console multiplayer subscription, though a game may require an internet connection, publisher account or separate service.
Cloud gaming The report does not establish whether cloud access would be included without a subscription.
Game with publisher-specific requirements A change to Microsoft’s fee would not itself remove requirements such as a publisher account or a separate service.

So “free multiplayer” would not mean free games, free Game Pass access, or the end of every account or service requirement. Cross-play with other platforms would also remain a separate question.

Why a PC-like Xbox could make the change plausible

Project Helix’s announced goal of bridging Xbox console and PC games gives the rumor a strategic rationale, but Microsoft has not stated that rationale or promised the policy. On a conventional PC, a game bought through Steam generally does not incur an Xbox console multiplayer fee. If Project Helix offers a console-shaped way to play games across both ecosystems, charging for multiplayer on Xbox-native games while PC storefront games carry no Xbox fee could create a distinction that feels arbitrary.

Removing that friction could make the platform easier to understand for PC players and encourage them to use Xbox hardware, accounts and game purchases. It might also make the system more competitive with PCs or other consoles. Those are implications of the reported direction, not confirmed Microsoft motives or product rules.

What remains unsettled

  • Whether multiplayer will be free for all purchased Xbox games, only some games, or not at all.
  • Whether a new policy would apply only to Project Helix or eventually to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
  • Which PC storefronts and games will work, and how their launchers, updates, saves, achievements and support will function.
  • Whether Game Pass plans or benefits will change if multiplayer is no longer bundled as a paid entitlement on the next console.
  • How compatibility will work for individual older games. “Playable” does not by itself establish native support, an enhancement, cloud streaming, or availability for every title.

Thurrott’s account of the original report described support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, original Xbox and Xbox 360 games, alongside PC games from other stores. Those reported compatibility details are not a final compatibility matrix; Microsoft’s later four-generation commitment is broader and does not spell out the treatment of each game.

What this means for current Xbox owners

The report concerned the next-generation Xbox; it does not establish that current consoles will get free multiplayer. Microsoft has not announced that Game Pass Core is ending. If you mainly play free-to-play games, you already do not need a paid multiplayer subscription for those games. For paid games on current consoles, use the existing plan terms unless Microsoft announces a change. Do not cancel a subscription or buy hardware based on the rumor alone.

Game Pass could still have value beyond multiplayer, including a game catalog, cloud gaming, discounts and other benefits. Microsoft’s Game Pass page describes the subscription across games, devices and benefits; the value for an individual player depends on which of those they use. A player who buys a few games outright and does not use a catalog or cloud gaming would weigh it differently from someone who regularly plays included games.

Should you wait for Project Helix?

  • Consider waiting if PC storefront access, older-game compatibility or potentially lower recurring costs are central to your decision—and you can wait for Microsoft to publish the actual rules and price.
  • Buy current hardware if you need a console now and its existing games and subscription terms work for you. The reported policy is not a current-console benefit.
  • Consider a gaming PC instead if access to multiple PC storefronts is the priority and you do not want to wait. A PC can offer that openness now, but may involve more setup and does not guarantee every game is free of accounts or other service requirements.

The decision should not rest on the multiplayer claim alone: Project Helix’s consumer price, launch timing and detailed software support have not been announced.

The status in one sentence

Project Helix is official, and a next Xbox that plays console and PC games is part of Microsoft’s stated direction; removing the paid multiplayer requirement is still only a reported possibility.
