The Xbox 360 Store is not shutting down today: Microsoft stopped new purchases through the console store and Xbox 360 Marketplace on July 29, 2024. Existing game purchases generally remain playable and downloadable, but the closure did not preserve every delisted game or add-on, and it did not mean every Xbox 360 multiplayer server would close.
What closed—and when
Microsoft announced the change on August 17, 2023, and ended new purchases on July 29, 2024. The closure covered the Xbox 360 Store built into the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace web storefront. Players can no longer use those storefronts to buy Xbox 360 games, DLC, or other entertainment content. Microsoft’s announcement describes the change.

This was a storefront closure, not a simultaneous shutdown of the whole Xbox Live network or every online feature. Microsoft also discontinued the Movies & TV app’s functionality on Xbox 360 after the closure. Video access should not be confused with ownership or access to Xbox 360 games and DLC. What happens to games and DLC you already own?
Microsoft said players could continue to play previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC and redownload purchased content after the store stopped taking sales. Access is not an unconditional promise that every title, license, account feature, or online service will work indefinitely: it can depend on the account that owns the purchase, the game, licensing, the console, and any required service.

Redownload a digital purchase
- Sign in to the Xbox 360 with the Microsoft account used to buy the item.
- Open the console’s download history or owned-content management area.
- Find the purchased game or add-on and start the download.
- If it is missing or fails, check the account and purchase history, region, available storage, and network connection; then restart the console and try again.
- If the entitlement still does not appear, contact Xbox Support for account-specific help.
Dashboard labels and support steps can vary with region and console software, so use Microsoft’s current support guidance if the menu wording differs. A purchase made on another account will not appear in the account you are currently using.
Disc games
A working Xbox 360 disc can still be used on a functioning Xbox 360, subject to the game’s own requirements. A disc may not include patches, DLC, or other content that was distributed separately. Disc ownership also does not restore multiplayer access if the game’s publisher has retired its servers.

Does Xbox 360 multiplayer still work?
The store closure did not itself turn off all Xbox 360 online multiplayer. Xbox Live account connectivity, a game’s matchmaking, and publisher-operated servers are distinct from the ability to buy from the 360 storefront. Some games may still support online play; others may have lost multiplayer through separate, title-specific server closures. Check the status for the particular game with its publisher or operator. Can you still buy Xbox 360 games?
Sometimes, but not through the closed 360 storefront. The available route depends on the specific game, region, edition, and platform.

Backward compatibility offers access to selected games, not the complete Xbox 360 library. Microsoft’s closure announcement explains that supported titles remained available through newer Xbox storefronts; check a title’s current listing rather than assuming it is sold or compatible.

Unpurchased content is most at risk when it was digital-only, delisted, or never brought to a newer storefront. That can include non-backward-compatible games, Xbox Live Arcade releases without disc editions, DLC and expansion packs, music-game song packs, avatar items, gamer pictures, themes, demos, trials, apps, and some compatibility packs or updates. Licensing changes can also affect availability.
There is no single reliable “lost forever” list that applies across every region and edition. Availability can change if a publisher re-releases a game, and a base game may remain available while a particular add-on does not. Check the exact title and DLC separately. What Xbox 360 owners should do now
- Sign in to the account that made purchases and review its purchase or download history.
- Redownload important owned games and DLC, then check that they launch or install correctly.
- Check saves and available console storage, especially before replacing or retiring a console.
- For a game you do not own, check modern Xbox storefront availability and backward compatibility, then look for a legitimate physical release or publisher re-release if it is not listed.
- For a disc-based game, keep the disc in usable condition and identify any add-ons or online features it needs.
- For multiplayer, check the game’s own service status; the store’s closure date does not establish whether its servers remain online.
