Sony announced the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter on June 3, 2024, and released it on August 7, 2024. Its estimated launch price was $59.99 in the United States, €59.99 in Europe, £49.99 in the United Kingdom, and ¥8,480 including tax in Japan. The adapter lets a PlayStation VR2 headset run compatible SteamVR games on a Windows PC, but it is not a complete PS5-style VR experience: HDR, eye tracking, headset feedback, adaptive triggers and PS VR2 Sense controller haptics are unavailable on PC.
What Sony actually announced
The product is an official PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, not a software unlock for every PlayStation VR2 game. Sony’s June 3, 2024 announcement said availability would begin August 7, 2024 through selected retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. The launch prices were Sony’s estimated retail prices:
| Market | Launch price |
|---|---|
| United States | $59.99 |
| Europe | €59.99 |
| United Kingdom | £49.99 |
| Japan | ¥8,480 including tax |
Sony’s announcement is documented at PlayStation Blog. Retail prices and stock can change; a US Best Buy listing has shown the official adapter at $59.99: Best Buy product page.
What the adapter unlocks
The adapter connects the PS VR2 to a Windows gaming PC so it can use SteamVR. Sony cites access to thousands of compatible SteamVR titles, including Half-Life: Alyx, Fallout 4 VR and War Thunder. That does not make PlayStation Store purchases playable on PC, and it does not guarantee that every SteamVR game will have identical controller mapping, tracking or performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Expand PC VR Content Ecosystem:Once connected to a PC, PS VR2 supports not only SteamVR games but also educational programs, simulation software, creative applications, and more – breaking free from console-only limitations and offering a wider range of VR experiences.
- Simple Plug‑and‑Play Setup:This adapter uses the same IC module as the official version. No technical expertise or complicated steps are required – just follow the manual to connect the adapter to your PS VR2 and PC, perform a few simple software settings, and you are ready to enjoy VR with minimal setup effort.
- Stable Power Supply for Seamless Performance:The adapter delivers a regulated DC 5.1V output, guaranteeing a steady and reliable power source for PS VR2 when used with a PC. This stable power prevents device malfunctions, screen flickering, or performance degradation caused by insufficient or fluctuating voltage, ensuring uninterrupted and stable VR sessions.
- High‑Definition Transmission for Visual Immersion (Updated with 4K60Hz):Equipped with a DisplayPort (DP) interface, the adapter enables 4K resolution and 120Hz high‑refresh‑rate video transmission, fully leveraging the PS VR2’s display capabilities. The resulting visuals are crisp, vivid, and lifelike, greatly enhancing your sense of presence in virtual environments.
- Ultra‑Fast Response for Lag‑Free Interaction:Leveraging the USB 3.0 high‑speed interface, the adapter ensures rapid transmission of large data volumes. In VR applications, player inputs and sensor data from the headset and controllers are synchronized in real time, effectively reducing latency and delivering instant feedback – so every move feels natural and responsive.
The software chain is:
- A compatible Windows PC
- Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter
- The free PlayStation VR2 App from Steam
- SteamVR from Steam
- A Steam account and separately purchased SteamVR games
Sony lists the required software and setup information on its PS VR2 PC support page. Steam and SteamVR are available from Steam and SteamVR’s store page.
What you need besides the $59.99 adapter
- A PlayStation VR2 headset and its headset cable
- A compatible Windows PC
- A DisplayPort 1.4 cable, sold separately
- An available USB 3.0 port connected directly to the PC
- Bluetooth 4.0 or later for the PS VR2 Sense controllers
- The adapter’s supplied AC adapter and power cord
- Steam, SteamVR, the PlayStation VR2 App and games purchased separately
Connect DisplayPort from the adapter to a standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output on the PC’s graphics hardware. Sony says DisplayPort over USB-C is not compatible with the official adapter. On a desktop, use the graphics card’s output rather than a motherboard video port. Laptop compatibility depends on the exact port wiring and how the manufacturer routes the discrete GPU signal, so a laptop’s GPU model alone is not enough.

PC requirements
Sony’s minimum specification is a floor, not a promise of high settings, stable frame rates or compatibility with every title. Sony recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or later, or an AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT or later, for best performance.
| Component | Sony minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100; AMD Zen 2 or later required |
| Memory | 8 GB or more |
| NVIDIA graphics | GeForce GTX 1650 or later; Turing architecture or later required |
| AMD graphics | Radeon RX 5500 XT or later, or RX 6500 XT or later |
| Display output | DisplayPort 1.4 |
| USB | USB 3.0, connected directly to the PC |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 4.0 or later |
Laptop checkpoint
A laptop with a native standard or Mini DisplayPort output is the safer case. A USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or dock is not automatically supported, and Sony specifically excludes DisplayPort over USB-C for this adapter. Verify the exact laptop model’s port specification and GPU routing before buying.

Features that do not work on PC
Sony’s comparison page lists these PS VR2 features as unavailable when the headset is used on PC: HDR output, PS VR2 Sense controller haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, headset eye tracking and headset feedback.
The headset still provides its OLED display, inside-out tracking, controller tracking and SteamVR access. However, console-side eye-tracked features and the same foveated-rendering behavior should not be assumed on PC. “No haptics” is also too broad: Sony specifically excludes Sense controller haptic feedback; ordinary game-dependent rumble is a separate matter.

Bluetooth is a genuine compatibility checkpoint
The adapter does not replace the PC’s Bluetooth requirement. Sony warns that some Bluetooth adapters are incompatible and maintains a compatibility page. A controller problem can appear as failed pairing, disconnects, frozen or offset hands, missing hands or intermittent inputs. Check Sony’s list before buying a dongle; Bluetooth 4.0 or newer by itself is not a guarantee. A direct connection with clear radio reception, rather than a dongle hidden behind a metal PC case, is the safer arrangement.

Who should buy it?
Strong fit: existing PS VR2 owners
For someone who already owns the headset and a suitable PC, the adapter is a relatively inexpensive way to add SteamVR games such as Half-Life: Alyx while retaining PS5 compatibility. The trade-off is accepting the missing PC features.
Strong fit: PS5-and-PC households
One headset can serve both ecosystems, provided the PC has the required wired DisplayPort connection and Bluetooth. This is the adapter’s clearest advantage over buying separate console and PC headsets.
Weak fit: a new PC-only buyer
Starting from zero means buying the headset, adapter, DisplayPort cable, compatible gaming PC and Steam games. Do not calculate a fixed total from the $59.99 adapter price alone; headset, PC and cable prices vary. A dedicated wireless PC VR headset may be simpler for someone who prioritizes wireless play and has no interest in PS5 VR, though it will not provide PS5-exclusive PS VR2 games.
Bottom line
Sony’s announcement was real, but it dates to June 3, 2024; the adapter launched August 7, 2024. At its $59.99 US launch price, it is a strong expansion accessory for PS VR2 owners with a compliant Windows PC. It is a much less convincing foundation for a brand-new PC VR setup because the DisplayPort cable, Bluetooth, computer and games are additional requirements, while HDR, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, headset feedback and Sense controller haptics do not carry over.
