Backbone launched the Backbone Pro | Xbox Edition on November 12, 2025, at a U.S. MSRP of $179.99. It is a premium Xbox-branded controller for phones, PCs, tablets, smart TVs and other supported screens—not an Xbox console and not a controller that pairs directly with an Xbox console.

The Pro Xbox Edition adds wireless Bluetooth play, full-size controls, rear buttons and a built-in battery to the smaller Backbone One Xbox Edition. Availability was announced through Backbone.com, Best Buy and Amazon, with Xbox later listing Backbone.com, Xbox.com and Amazon. Backbone’s product page currently displays the $179.99 price alongside a “Sold out” status, so check the retailer checkout page before treating it as in stock.

What the Backbone Pro Xbox Edition is

This is the Xbox-themed version of Backbone’s higher-end Pro mobile controller, with a translucent green design and Designed for Xbox branding. It is built to move between mobile gaming, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Remote Play, PC streaming and other controller-compatible services.

The controller is sold as hardware. It does not include an Xbox console, and it does not turn a phone into a self-contained Xbox: cloud and remote-play services still have their own account, subscription, network and regional requirements.

Price and availability

Model U.S. price shown by Backbone Position

Backbone One Xbox Edition USB-C, 2nd gen $109.99 Compact, wired-only alternative

The Pro Xbox Edition launched on November 12, 2025. Backbone’s launch announcement named Backbone.com, Best Buy and Amazon; Xbox’s later announcement also listed Xbox.com. Prices, regional availability and inventory can change, and Backbone’s own product page currently shows “Sold out” despite displaying the list price.

Features and hardware

  • Full-size ALPS thumbsticks.
  • Hall-effect triggers. Official Backbone material does not establish Hall-effect thumbsticks.
  • Two customizable rear buttons.
  • Button remapping and saved control profiles through the Backbone app.
  • Larger sculpted grips with laser-etched textured surfaces.
  • USB-C wired connectivity and Bluetooth Low Energy wireless connectivity.
  • Built-in battery rated by Backbone for up to 40 hours of wireless use; this is a manufacturer claim, not an independent runtime test.
  • Magnetic adapters for phone fit and case compatibility.
  • 3.5mm headset support listed in Backbone’s product information.

Wired USB-C play is useful when you want a direct phone connection; Bluetooth allows the same controller to work with supported tablets, computers, televisions and streaming devices. The Pro’s larger body is less pocketable than the Backbone One but better suited to long sessions for players who prefer full-size controls.

Compatibility: phones and other screens

Backbone lists support for iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series devices, compatible Android phones, and supported tablets, PCs, laptops, smart TVs and other screens over USB-C or Bluetooth. Its Pro information page lists iOS 15 or later and Android 10 or later as operating-system requirements. USB-C is required for wired phone use, so Lightning iPhone 14 and earlier models are not compatible with this Pro model.

BACKBONE Pro Gaming Controller
  • PRECISION CONTROLS: Designed for all serious gamers across all platforms, The Backbone Pro gaming controller features full-size ALPS analog joysticks, a precision D-pad, tactile face buttons, remappable rear buttons, and ergonomic grips. • BACKBONE APP FOR ENHANCED EXPERIENCE: To get the full experience with your controller, download the Backbone App to launch all your games in one place. The Backbone App allows you to search for new titles, connect with friends, and keep your controller firmware updated. The app is optional for gameplay, but adds convenience and access to advanced features that you can enjoy with your Backbone Pro.
  • UNLOCK MORE WITH BACKBONE+: With Backbone+, you can connect and launch console games with cloud or remote play directly through the Backbone App. Additionally, Backbone+ transforms your mobile controller into a retro gaming hub, featuring the app’s built-in emulator. Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play and ordinary games

Use case Xbox console required? What else is required
Xbox Cloud Gaming No Supported Game Pass plan, region, device and network
Xbox Remote Play Yes A compatible Xbox configured for Remote Play and a suitable network
Native mobile games No The game must support controllers
PC or Steam streaming No Xbox console specifically A compatible PC and Steam Link or another supported setup

Xbox Cloud Gaming runs games from Microsoft’s servers, so owning an Xbox is not required. Remote Play streams games from an Xbox that you own and have configured. The Backbone controller is the input device in both cases, not the source of the game.

Game Pass and Backbone+ requirements

The package includes one free month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for eligible new members. The code is redeemed through the Backbone app, and the subscription renews automatically unless canceled. Backbone’s indexed pages disagree about the offer deadline: the product page says March 31, 2028, while the launch announcement says January 31, 2029. Confirm the date printed on the redemption card or the current Xbox terms before relying on the promotion.

The hardware itself does not require Backbone+. Backbone says its free app supports firmware updates, joystick calibration and remapping. Its FAQ says Backbone+ is required to launch Xbox Cloud Gaming from inside the Backbone app, while Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play can also be opened through their own supported apps or websites, subject to Microsoft’s requirements. Backbone+ is therefore an app-service subscription, not a hardware activation fee.

How it compares with the Backbone One Xbox Edition

Feature Backbone Pro Xbox Edition Backbone One Xbox Edition
U.S. price $179.99 $109.99
Connection USB-C and Bluetooth USB-C wired
Battery Built-in battery, up to 40 hours claimed No controller battery needed for wired phone use
Controls Full-size ALPS sticks, Hall-effect triggers, two rear buttons Standard Backbone One layout
Best fit Long sessions and multi-device play Lower-cost, compact phone gaming

The $70 difference buys wireless connectivity, a rechargeable battery, a larger grip and extra programmable inputs. Choose the Backbone One if you mainly play on one USB-C phone and want the smallest, least expensive Xbox-branded option.

How it compares with the standard Backbone Pro

Backbone lists the standard Backbone Pro at $169.99, $10 less than the Xbox Edition. The core Pro hardware and multi-device feature set are presented as substantially similar. The Xbox model’s meaningful differences are its Xbox-themed design, branding and the included Game Pass promotion where the offer is available. If those do not matter to you, the standard Pro is the more economical choice.

Setup and troubleshooting

  1. Install the Backbone app if you need firmware updates, calibration, profiles or remapping.
  2. Attach the appropriate magnetic adapter and fit the phone; remove a case if it prevents a secure fit.
  3. For wired play, insert a compatible USB-C phone. For wireless play, pair the controller over Bluetooth.
  4. Open a controller-compatible game, Xbox app or supported streaming service.
  5. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, separately verify Game Pass eligibility, supported region, network quality and whether you are launching through Backbone or directly through Xbox.

If the controller is not recognized

  • Update firmware in the Backbone app.
  • Reconnect the USB-C plug or repeat Bluetooth pairing.
  • Test a known controller-compatible game.
  • Check that the phone and its case meet the physical and operating-system requirements.

If cloud play is unavailable

Check the Game Pass tier, account eligibility, region, service status and network before diagnosing the controller. A Backbone cannot bypass Microsoft’s cloud-gaming requirements.

If the wireless battery is empty

Switch to USB-C wired play when the phone, game and setup support it.

Should you buy it?

Buy the Pro Xbox Edition if

  • You want wireless Bluetooth and wired USB-C options.
  • You prefer larger controls and grips for longer sessions.
  • You will use rear buttons, remapping or multiple control profiles.
  • You want one controller for phones, computers, tablets and supported TV or streaming setups.
  • The Xbox styling and eligible-member Game Pass offer have value to you.

Choose another model if

  • You only need inexpensive wired phone play: the Backbone One Xbox Edition is $70 less at Backbone’s listed U.S. price.
  • You want the Pro hardware but do not care about Xbox branding: the standard Backbone Pro is listed at $169.99.
  • You expect direct Xbox-console pairing or a replacement for an Xbox: this product is not that.
  • You use a Lightning iPhone or a phone whose case cannot accommodate the Pro.

The Backbone Pro Xbox Edition is a credible premium mobile and multi-device controller, but its value depends on using the features that distinguish it from the cheaper Backbone One. Verify stock at checkout, confirm your phone’s USB-C and OS compatibility, and treat the Game Pass month as a limited promotion rather than a permanent entitlement.
