In 2017, Lenovo Star Wars: Jedi Challenges was one of the most convincing consumer Star Wars augmented-reality experiences available. You held a physical lightsaber hilt, saw its blade and enemies in your own room, and fought by matching blocks and strikes. In 2026, the same product is discontinued: Disney retired the app and gear on June 1, 2022, and ended support on July 6, 2022. Treat a second-hand kit as unsupported legacy hardware or a collectible, not as a dependable modern game system.
What the Jedi Challenges system included
The starter kit combined three hardware pieces:
- Lenovo Mirage AR headset: a phone holder and optical display that let you see the room while virtual Star Wars content was layered over it.
- Lightsaber controller: a physical hilt modeled on Rey’s lightsaber. It provided motion input and haptic feedback; the glowing blade existed only in the headset image.
- Tracking beacon: a floor unit that established the play area and helped align the virtual scene.
A compatible smartphone supplied the screen and processing. You inserted the phone into the headset rather than connecting the system to a PC or console. Lenovo’s product FAQ describes the hardware and requirements at Lenovo Support.
AR rather than conventional VR
Jedi Challenges was smartphone-powered AR, sometimes described as mixed-reality passthrough optics. The display did not seal you inside an opaque virtual world: furniture, walls and other people remained visible. That made it less isolating and made it easier to judge where you were swinging than with an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.
The compromise was visual solidity. Characters and objects looked like projected holographic layers rather than a fully opaque, high-fidelity game world. Image quality depended on the inserted phone, while lighting and calibration affected tracking. Calling the product simply “VR” obscures those important differences.

Wearing it: comfortable for a session, not weightless
Tech Advisor listed the headset at approximately 470 g and reported wearing it over glasses during a short demonstration (Tech Advisor). Geek Culture likewise found it comfortable with glasses and less restrictive than the VR headsets its reviewer had used (Geek Culture). These are short-session impressions, not evidence that every wearer will be comfortable for hours.
Once a phone is installed, the front becomes heavier. A phone case may have to come off to fit the tray, and the phone determines much of the usable image quality. The headset had no built-in headphone jack; audio was intended to come from the phone or a wireless headset. Thurrott’s hands-on account is at Thurrott.
Room guidance varied by situation. Thurrott used roughly an 8-by-8-foot area, while Lenovo’s later multiplayer guidance called for about 6 feet between two players. Those figures are practical context, not a single universal minimum.

- Put the beacon on the floor and clear the play area.
- Insert and connect the phone inside the Mirage headset.
- Pair or activate the lightsaber controller.
- Follow the app’s calibration prompts.
- Stand in the clear area and confirm that the virtual blade lines up with the physical hilt.
- Start with an easier encounter before attempting faster duels.
Menu names and behavior varied by phone and software version. The historical headset instructions are archived at Star Wars Support.
How the lightsaber duels felt
The lightsaber mode was the system’s strongest demonstration. Enemies signaled incoming attacks, and you moved the hilt into the indicated vertical, horizontal or diagonal guard position. After a successful defense, an opening appeared for a strike. The prompts made the basics easy to understand, but increasingly rapid attacks demanded timing rather than random waving.
The physical hilt supplied presence that a phone-only AR game could not. Haptic feedback helped confirm contact, while the virtual blade made each block readable. Repeated swings and defensive movements could leave a player mildly breathless, especially as encounters became faster. Reports describe battles with Kylo Ren and other dark-side opponents; later official material also listed the Grand Inquisitor and Darth Vader.
Tracking was the principal weakness. Hands-on reviewers saw the virtual blade become slightly crooked or misaligned, particularly when calibration, lighting or beacon placement was imperfect. Historical troubleshooting advised stopping, checking the beacon, reseating the phone, recalibrating and using a clear, evenly lit area. Lenovo’s archived guide is at Lenovo’s troubleshooting page; those steps are not a promise of 2026 support.

The other game modes
Strategic Combat
This was a real-time, tabletop-style strategy mode. You commanded Star Wars forces across a floor-based battlefield and deployed units instead of fencing an opponent. Tech Advisor’s preview did not play this mode, so its duel impressions should not be read as a complete assessment of Strategic Combat.
Holochess
Holochess recreated the holographic chess-like game from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Virtual alien pieces occupied a board in your room, making this a slower, more deliberate contrast to the physical pace of lightsaber battles.
Expansions and local multiplayer
Dark Side Expansion
The free Dark Side Expansion was a historical app update. It added three new duelists, each with three difficulty levels, without requiring new starter-kit hardware. Lenovo also announced a separate Kylo Ren Lightsaber accessory at a U.S. launch price of $99.99; that was historical pricing, and the accessory required the complete starter kit (Lenovo StoryHub).
Two-player modes
A 2018 update added local Lightsaber Versus Mode and Ship Battles. Both were limited to two players, and each participant needed a complete Jedi Challenges starter kit. Lenovo specified shared Wi-Fi for the local environment; its FAQ said an active internet connection and internet data traffic were not required once players were connected locally. For Lightsaber Versus, the guidance called for about 6 feet between players and beacons roughly 3 feet apart. Details are preserved in Lenovo’s FAQ and the multiplayer announcement. These are historical features, not currently supported online services.

Phone compatibility was narrow
Historical compatibility covered selected devices, not every handset meeting a minimum operating-system number. Examples included iPhone 6s through XR-era models, several iPads and the sixth-generation iPod touch; Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 edge/S8/S8+; Google Pixel and Pixel XL; Moto Z and Z2; and LG G6. The Android requirement was Android 6.0 or later plus Wi-Fi, but only tested models were listed. The archived getting-started information is at Star Wars Support, with the historical compatibility page at jedichallenges.com.
Do not infer that a current iPhone or Android phone will work simply because it runs a newer operating system. The app and service retirement makes buying a modern phone specifically for this product especially difficult to justify.
What it cost and what it was worth at launch
The U.S. launch price was $199.99, according to StarWars.com (StarWars.com). At that price, the tactile hilt, multiple modes and convincing room-scale illusion made a strong novelty case for Star Wars fans. Promotional material described more than 30 hours of content, but that was Lenovo’s marketing estimate rather than an independently measured playtime figure.

Disney’s official notice says Star Wars: Jedi Challenges was retired on June 1, 2022, with product support ending July 6, 2022; no future updates or product support are planned (Star Wars Support). A sealed box therefore is not equivalent to a supported modern game.

Buy only when all of these are true
- You want an early-AR collectible or legacy experiment, not a current platform.
- The seller can show that the app launches on a historically compatible phone.
- The headset, original lightsaber controller and tracking beacon are all included.
- The controller charges, pairs and holds a battery charge; the beacon and cables are present.
- You accept that official troubleshooting, updates and repairs are unavailable.
Avoid it when you expect
- Guaranteed compatibility with a current phone.
- Online matchmaking or ongoing content updates.
- A reliable experience from an untested sealed package.
- Children to use it unsupervised around fragile objects, pets or other people.
Do not treat unofficial app downloads as a normal fix for an app that cannot be found. The retirement notice is the authoritative current status, and no reliable 2026 market price is established here.
Safety and ownership checks
Seeing the room through the optics reduces isolation but does not remove collision risk. Clear fragile objects, keep spectators outside the swing area, keep pets and small children away, leave more room than the minimum and take breaks if the headset causes discomfort. Inspect a used hilt for cracked plastic, swelling or other battery damage before charging. Star Wars’ historical safety guidance is at Important safety and handling information.
Verdict
Jedi Challenges remains an unusually tactile and charming early AR experiment. Its best trick—making a physical hilt feel like a lightsaber in your own room—was real, and the transparent view made it more approachable than opaque VR. But narrow phone support, cumbersome setup, occasional tracking drift and dead official services matter more in 2026 than they did at launch. Buy only a complete, tested kit at a price you are comfortable treating as a collectible gamble.
