Sony announced the PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10, 2024, with a November 7 launch and an original U.S. launch price of $699.99. That price is historical: Sony raised the U.S. recommended retail price to $899.99 effective April 2, 2026. The Pro is a digital-only, higher-performance PS5 with a 2TB SSD; its disc drive and vertical stand are separate purchases.

What the original $699.99 package included
The launch package was a 2TB PS5 Pro console, one DualSense wireless controller, HDMI cable, AC power cord, two plastic feet for horizontal placement, and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. Sony’s current PS5 Pro product page lists the console and included items.

#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
The advertised 2TB is internal SSD capacity; system software uses some storage, so not all of it is available for games. The console launched without an optical disc drive or vertical stand, and it did not include another premium game beyond Astro’s Playroom.
Digital-only console: when to add the disc drive
The PS5 Pro itself has no disc drive. Sony sells a compatible drive separately; it supports PS5 game discs, supported PS4 game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. An internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Check compatibility and availability on Sony’s disc-drive page.
For a physical-media setup, the console price is only the starting point: add the separate drive, and add Sony’s vertical stand only if you plan to position the console upright. The included feet are for horizontal placement. Accessory prices are not stated here because they can vary; check the official pages before buying.
What PS5 Pro changes—and what it does not
Sony built the Pro around a more capable GPU, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-assisted image reconstruction technology. The aim in supported games is to deliver sharper, higher-quality visuals and improved effects while offering smoother frame rates than a game’s comparable standard-PS5 mode. Sony describes the feature set on its PS5 Pro overview.

Results and available graphics modes depend on the game, its PS5 Pro patch, display, and chosen settings. Sony uses the label “PS5 Pro Enhanced” for titles with tailored enhancements. The console also offers PS5 Pro Game Boost and improved image quality for certain PS4 games, but compatibility and benefits vary by title.
Enhanced games: examples from the announcement and launch
Sony’s reveal-era examples included Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, The Crew Motorfest, and The First Descendant. Sony said more than 50 games had enhancements available or planned around launch, with support expected to expand through updates.

That is a dated sample, not a complete current catalog. Check Sony’s changing PS5 Pro updates and game information for current title-specific details. “PS5 Pro compatible” should not be read as a guarantee of a dedicated graphics patch.

It makes more sense if
- You already own a PS5 and play several games with Pro-specific enhancements.
- You have a 4K display, and ideally a 120Hz-capable TV or monitor, that can make higher image quality or frame rates more useful.
- You value graphics performance enough to pay a premium over the standard console.
- You are digital-first, or you have accounted for the separate disc drive if you rely on physical games or movie discs.
- You want more built-in storage than the standard model’s listed 1TB SSD offers.
The standard PS5 may be the better fit if
- You are budget-conscious or satisfied with your current PS5’s performance.
- Your display is 1080p, or the games you play are not among those receiving meaningful Pro-specific benefits.
- You depend on physical games and prefer a disc drive included in the console rather than an extra accessory.
- You mainly play casually and would rather put the price difference toward games or other priorities.
A 4K screen is the most relevant context for judging image-quality changes, while a 120Hz-capable display can make higher-frame-rate options useful. HDR capability, viewing distance, and personal sensitivity also affect what you notice. Compressed comparison videos can be a poor substitute for seeing a game on your own display; none of these factors guarantees that every Pro enhancement will be visible to every player.
Current U.S. price: the headline is no longer current
Sony announced that the U.S. PS5 Pro MSRP would rise to $899.99 effective April 2, 2026. The price-change announcement is the basis for that figure. PlayStation Direct’s U.S. listings have displayed approximately $899; retailer pricing and checkout totals can differ, so verify the current listing before purchase.
In other words, $699.99 accurately described the original 2024 U.S. launch MSRP, not the current official U.S. price. Do not apply the 2026 U.S. increase to other countries without checking Sony’s local pricing.
Quick Recap
Buying checklist
- Confirm the current local console price and whether it is a retailer offer or Sony’s recommended price.
- Check whether your most-played games have PS5 Pro enhancements and what those enhancements actually provide.
- Decide whether you need the disc drive; if so, check its stock and setup requirement before buying the console.
- Choose horizontal placement with the included feet or budget for the separate vertical stand.
- Consider your TV or monitor and whether it supports the resolution, HDR, or refresh-rate features you want to use.
- Remember that 2TB is advertised capacity, not all free space, and that large games can eventually require storage management or expansion.
