TAG Heuer announced a run of 2,000 watches for July 15, 2021, combining Mario-themed case details and activity animations with its Connected smartwatch platform. Its original launch prices were reported as US$2,150, €2,000 and A$3,100 in different markets; those are historical figures, not verified 2026 resale prices. If you’re considering one now, treat it as an older connected device and collectible, and verify its condition, software and accessories before buying.
What the Mario edition is
TAG Heuer and Nintendo presented the watch as the first Super Mario edition in a longer-term collaboration. It takes the Connected smartwatch platform and adds licensed physical design details, Mario-themed software and a limited-edition presentation. It is a digital smartwatch, not a mechanical watch with a Mario-themed movement.
TAG Heuer’s launch material set production at 2,000 pieces and the launch date at July 15, 2021. The brand’s year-end retrospective also identifies it as a 2021 release (TAG Heuer launch material; TAG Heuer’s 2021 retrospective). In 2026, it is best understood as a discontinued historical edition unless a current official listing confirms stock. The launch sources do not establish present inventory, resale value, software support or warranty coverage.
The collaboration makes intuitive sense: Mario is associated with running, jumping, sports and progress through game objectives. The watch borrows that language to make activity goals more playful; it does not turn its fitness tracking into a new or medically validated system.

Design: watch-sized Mario references
The 45 mm steel case is accented rather than covered in cartoon artwork. Red lacquer marks the bezel graduations and pushers, while the crown carries a Mario “M.” The bezel places a Super Mushroom at 3 o’clock, a Pipe at 6, and a Super Star at 9. The screw-down caseback bears limited-edition wording, and the steel folding clasp has Mario “M” branding.
TAG Heuer’s launch specification identifies the case as steel. Hodinkee described it as titanium, so published coverage conflicts; the manufacturer’s launch material is the basis for the steel specification here (TAG Heuer launch material; Hodinkee’s description).
Rank #2
- Touch-activated LED display shows the time with a simple tap
- Durable metallic alloy case with a vibrant Super Mario design
- Comfortable silicone strap featuring Mario & Luigi artwork
- Adjustable band fits wrist sizes from 5.5" to 8"
- Officially licensed Nintendo product, perfect for young fans
The quick-change strap system came with two options: black leather over red rubber, and red perforated rubber. The 45 mm diameter and 13.5 mm thickness make this a substantial watch; try it on if possible, especially if you have a smaller wrist. Launch coverage also describes dedicated packaging and a travel case, but a secondhand listing should be checked for the actual included contents.
How the Mario activity animations work
The interactive Mario face ties character animations to progress toward the wearer’s daily step target. Mario greets the wearer in the morning, and the display changes as progress reaches four thresholds:

The activity system is a motivational overlay on step tracking, not evidence of superior fitness measurement. TAG Heuer’s launch description covers the progression and associated rewards (TAG Heuer launch material; Time+Tide’s launch coverage).
Watch faces and what was exclusive
The Mario edition arrived with a broader Super Mario-inspired interface and four described dial treatments: a pixel-art Timekeeping face recalling the 1985 Super Mario Bros.; two Heuer 02 variations, one colorful and one more restrained; and an Orbital face with rotating Mario-related elements. The interface and reskinned faces were presented as edition-specific.

That is distinct from the animated Mario activity face. TAG Heuer’s launch material said the animated face might later be made available on other newer Connected editions, and a later TAG Heuer email advertised it for the 2020 Connected watch. That does not mean the other Mario interface elements or physical edition details were included on those watches (TAG Heuer launch material; TAG Heuer email reproduced by Milled).

Who should consider it—and who should hesitate
It may suit
- Mario and Nintendo collectors who value an officially licensed object with both physical and software references.
- TAG Heuer collectors interested in an unusual Connected edition and a stated 2,000-piece run.
- Buyers who prioritize the design and collectible appeal over the newest smartwatch platform.
Think twice if
- You want a compact watch: 45 mm across and 13.5 mm thick is a large format.
- You need long battery life. TAG Heuer’s stated normal-use figure was about a day, while its sports-use claim was six hours under GPS, heart-rate and music use.
- You need current smartwatch compatibility, updates or app availability. This is a 2021 electronic device, and the launch sources do not establish its 2026 support status.
- You expect the price premium to buy radically different smartwatch hardware; much of the edition’s distinction is its licensed design, software treatment and limited production.
- You plan water activities based only on the 5 ATM rating. Water resistance is not a universal promise, and an older watch’s seals may no longer perform as they did when new.
- You rely on activity or heart-rate readings as medical measurements; these are smartwatch estimates, not a medical diagnosis.
Compared with a mechanical limited edition, this watch has aging electronics and a battery whose condition matters to ownership. Do not assume battery replacement, software longevity or serviceability; ask TAG Heuer directly about support for the particular unit. A current Connected model may be a more practical choice for someone prioritizing newer software and support, but it will not necessarily reproduce the Mario edition’s caseback, straps, packaging or content.
Used-watch checklist
These are buyer-protection checks, not manufacturer-certified requirements. Ask the seller to demonstrate or document each relevant point before paying:
- Match the reference and serial number on the watch to its warranty card, box and paperwork; account for the published reference discrepancy.
- Confirm which original items are included: box, red travel case, both straps, clasp, charger and documentation.
- See the watch boot, charge, pair and reach its setup screen. Ask the seller to perform a factory reset and remove their account so you can confirm it is ready for setup.
- After a full charge, check battery behavior during a realistic trial rather than assuming a five-year-old unit can match its original claim.
- Inspect the display for burn-in, dead pixels and scratches; test both pushers, the crown and clasp.
- Ask whether the Mario interface and faces are still installed and whether the seller can demonstrate them. Do not assume content can be restored if it is missing.
- Ask about water-resistance testing and service history. Do not treat the original 5 ATM rating as proof that an older, untested unit is sealed.
- Check the return policy, authenticity protections and what happens if the watch cannot be paired or charged after delivery.
- Judge the price against the working watch and included accessories, not just the presence of an original box.
For questions about serviceability, battery options, software support or water-resistance testing, contact TAG Heuer through its official site before relying on a seller’s assurances.

Verdict
The Connected x Super Mario is most compelling as a Mario collectible that happens to be a luxury smartwatch: its game references appear in the case details as well as the activity interface. It is a weaker fit for someone seeking the latest smartwatch support, a small case or multi-day battery life. In 2026, the condition and usability of the individual watch matter as much as its limited-edition status.
