Xbox PC App Adds Steam and Other Stores—Here’s What the Integration Does

The Xbox PC app can gather installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, and other supported stores—but it is a launcher hub, not a replacement for their accounts or clients.

The Xbox PC app can bring Xbox and Game Pass games together with installed games from Steam, Epic Games Launcher, GOG, Battle.net, and other supported PC storefronts. It’s a convenient place to find and launch games, especially on a Windows handheld—but it does not merge accounts or purchases, and you’ll generally still need each game’s original launcher for downloads, updates, and sign-in.

What the Xbox app’s store integration actually does

Think of the Xbox PC app as a front door to games from several places, not a new store that takes over your other accounts. Its aggregated library is designed to show Xbox and Game Pass titles alongside recognized games installed through other PC storefronts. You can use the Xbox app to find a listed game and start it; the original storefront or another required launcher may then open.

Microsoft announced the aggregated library for Xbox Insiders on June 23, 2025, describing coverage for Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other leading PC storefronts. Microsoft’s announcement focused on a single place to find and launch games, not transferring ownership or combining store accounts.

A related feature, My apps, helps users find, download, and launch third-party applications, including storefronts. Microsoft announced it for Insiders on August 21, 2025. My apps is about accessing those applications; it is not a universal marketplace for buying games from every PC store.

Microsoft and rollout coverage described the broader Windows PC and handheld experience in September 2025. Xbox Mode expanded the idea further with a more controller-oriented interface: Microsoft said its rollout began in select markets on April 30, 2026, with availability expanding over subsequent weeks. Windows Experience Blog coverage and Microsoft’s Xbox Mode announcement describe the Windows and handheld direction. The interface and availability can differ by device, market, and rollout stage.

Which stores and games can appear?

Microsoft explicitly named Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and “other leading PC storefronts” in its initial announcement. Rollout coverage also named Steam, Epic Games Launcher, and GOG. That makes those launchers useful examples, but the reviewed public announcements do not provide a permanent, exhaustive compatibility list.

Store or source What the Xbox app can do Original launcher still relevant? Evidence
Xbox and Game Pass Show Xbox and Game Pass games in the Xbox library; Game Pass access remains subject to the subscription and title availability. Xbox app is the first-party access point; a particular game may have additional requirements. Named by Microsoft in its June 2025 announcement.
Battle.net Surface recognized installed games for discovery and launching. Yes, for installation, updates, and any required account authentication. Named by Microsoft in its June 2025 announcement.
Steam Rollout coverage reported that installed Steam games could appear and be launched from the Xbox app. Generally yes; Steam remains responsible for its games’ ownership, downloads, and updates. Windows Central rollout coverage.
Epic Games Launcher Rollout coverage reported support for installed games and access to the launcher through My apps. Generally yes, for installation, updates, and authentication. Tom’s Guide rollout coverage.
GOG Rollout coverage reported that installed GOG games could appear in the aggregated library. GOG Galaxy or the relevant game setup may still be needed, depending on the title and how it was installed. Windows Central rollout coverage.
Other storefronts Support is described broadly as other leading storefronts; no exhaustive permanent list is established in the cited announcements. Assume the storefront remains necessary unless its behavior is confirmed for the specific game. Microsoft’s announcement uses broad wording.

Appearance is not guaranteed for every game in a supported store. Detection can depend on the game being installed locally, the Xbox app recognizing its installation, and the relevant launcher or authentication service working. A game can also require a second publisher launcher, anti-cheat service, or sign-in. Do not assume that every game you own—or every launcher, such as EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Amazon Games, or itch.io—will appear.

What “Steam integration” does not mean

Seeing a Steam game in the Xbox app does not make it an Xbox game. The listing is a shortcut or library entry, not a transfer of the Steam license. The Xbox app does not thereby combine store purchases, synchronize achievements or playtime, merge cloud saves, or give Xbox friends access to Steam-owned games. Nor does it normally replace Steam’s downloads, updates, community features, Workshop, or account checks.

A Steam-purchased game may still open Steam and then invoke a publisher launcher such as EA, Ubisoft, or Rockstar. The Xbox app’s launch entry does not bypass a game’s DRM or authentication requirements. Whether a title can start offline depends on the game and its original launcher.

How to set up the Xbox app as a multi-store launcher

The precise labels can change as the app is updated. Start with the official Xbox app for PC, and look for the library or games view and, where available, My apps.

  1. Install or update the Xbox app on your Windows PC or supported handheld, then sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Xbox or PC Game Pass.
  2. Install the storefront where you own a game—such as Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, or Battle.net—and sign in there with your usual account.
  3. Install a game through that storefront if you want to test whether it appears as ready to play. Ownership alone does not mean a game will show as installed in the Xbox app.
  4. Open the Xbox app’s library or games view and look for the aggregated or installed-games section. Use My apps to find or launch supported storefront applications when that section is available.
  5. Select a recognized game. Expect the original storefront, or another required launcher, to handle some or all of the launch process.

If an installed game does not appear or launch

Try these checks before reinstalling a large game:

  • Confirm the title is installed, rather than merely listed in your store account as owned.
  • Open the original launcher and check that it recognizes the installation. If it does not, resolve that issue there first.
  • Launch the game once directly from its storefront. This can surface a required sign-in, first-run setup, or launcher prompt.
  • Update the Xbox app and the original storefront, then restart both. Reopen the Xbox app after installing a new game.
  • Check that the installation is on a local drive the apps can access.
  • If there are duplicate entries, editions, or shortcuts, check which one points to the installation you intend to run.
  • If the Xbox entry is missing, stale, or opens the wrong executable, use the original launcher while you troubleshoot.

Like other multi-store library views, game detection can become stale if a storefront changes installation paths, executable names, or launcher behavior. That is a general limitation of aggregation; it does not by itself show that a game has been removed from your account.

Xbox app, Steam, or a dedicated library manager?

Choose based on what you want the software to manage. The Xbox app is most useful as a Microsoft-integrated launch surface; the storefront where you bought a game remains the authority for that game’s store-specific features.

Xbox and Game Pass access, with a convenient view of installed games elsewhere Xbox PC app It aggregates access but does not take over other stores’ accounts, purchases, or game-management features.
Steam purchases, community features, Workshop, and store-specific management Steam It is not a first-party hub for every other storefront.
Custom categories, artwork, plugins, emulators, or non-store games A dedicated aggregator such as Playnite Greater flexibility can mean more setup and maintenance; it is not Microsoft’s integrated Xbox interface.
GOG library features and a view that can include integrations with other services GOG Galaxy Integrations and coverage can vary; it should not be assumed to manage every store equally.

Steam remains the better home for users who depend on its collections, tags, reviews, community, or Workshop. A dedicated aggregator may suit users who want to organize emulators and manually added games alongside storefront libraries. The Xbox app is a practical choice when first-party Windows/Xbox integration and controller-friendly access matter more than deep cross-store management.

Who benefits most?

  • Xbox or PC Game Pass users: It puts those games and recognized installed titles from other stores in a more unified view. The app is free; Game Pass is an optional subscription, and a game appearing in the app does not mean it is included in the catalog.
  • Windows handheld owners: A controller-oriented front end can reduce the friction of switching between launchers, though the exact interface and Xbox Mode rollout vary by device and market.
  • Players with only a Steam library: The Xbox app may offer a convenient shortcut, but Steam remains necessary for its own store features and game management.
  • Library power users: If you need extensive metadata editing, non-store shortcuts, emulator management, or detailed organization, compare dedicated tools rather than expecting the Xbox app to replace them.

For current app availability and details, Microsoft’s Xbox PC app page describes a library that brings together Xbox, Game Pass, and installed games from other PC storefronts.
