The Switch 2 launched in the U.S. on June 5, 2025. Its U.S. MSRP is $449.99 before tax through August 31, 2026; Nintendo has announced a rise to $499.99 on September 1.
Why Nintendo kept the Switch design
Switch 2 is an evolutionary redesign in shape, not a small upgrade in capability. It remains a screen with detachable controllers that can be used handheld, on a tabletop or connected to a TV. Nintendo says it considered other directions but chose to build on that flexible arrangement rather than introduce a feature that would constrain how developers make games. Its stated priorities were greater processing capacity and hardware capabilities useful across a broad range of software. Nintendo’s developer interview explains that design rationale.

The company’s official consumer specifications identify a custom NVIDIA processor, but do not provide a complete retail chip specification. Teardown and analyst claims about a specific chip family should therefore be treated as third-party identification, not Nintendo-confirmed specifications.
A larger, sharper LCD screen
The built-in display is a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920 × 1080 resolution. Nintendo lists HDR10 support and refresh rates up to 120 Hz, with variable refresh rate in supported modes. The screen is larger than the original Switch’s while Nintendo says the system retains approximately the same thickness. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
These are capabilities, not settings every game uses. A title must support HDR or higher refresh rates to benefit, and performance depends on the software and operating conditions. The panel is LCD, not OLED. Compared with an OLED Switch, Switch 2 offers more resolution, screen area and supported display features; OLED’s contrast and black levels may still matter more to some viewers.
Joy-Con 2: magnetic attachment and mouse controls
Joy-Con 2 controllers connect to the console magnetically instead of sliding onto mechanical rails. They are larger, with larger SL and SR shoulder buttons, and a rear release button disengages the magnetic connection. The right controller adds a dedicated C button for GameChat. Nintendo describes these changes in its Switch and Switch 2 hardware comparison.
Either Joy-Con 2 can also work as a mouse in compatible games: place its side surface against a suitable tabletop or other surface and move it to control a pointer. That can suit aiming, strategy interfaces, drawing or other precise interactions, but support is game-specific rather than universal. The option adds a control method without making mouse play mandatory. Nintendo discusses the feature in its Switch 2 announcement.
Original Switch Joy-Con can connect wirelessly, but they do not attach to the Switch 2 body. If used detached, they need to be charged on the original Switch or with a compatible charging accessory. Nintendo’s documentation does not establish that Joy-Con 2 uses Hall-effect sticks or that drift is impossible.

GameChat puts communication on the console
Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, and the C button opens GameChat. Nintendo lists voice chat and game-screen sharing for groups of up to 12 friends; video chat requires a compatible USB camera. This puts communication controls on the console rather than relying on each game to implement its own chat system. Nintendo’s GameChat feature page has the feature details.
The no-membership open-access period ended March 31, 2026. In the U.S., use of GameChat now requires Nintendo Switch Online under Nintendo’s current terms; check the regional service conditions for account, privacy and parental-control details. A camera is optional for voice chat and screen sharing.

- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
The dock is part of the redesign
The redesigned dock supports TV output up to 4K and HDR in supported conditions, and includes Ethernet connectivity. The system can output a 4K signal; that does not mean every game renders natively at 4K. Resolution and performance vary by title, docked mode, settings and any reconstruction or upscaling used. Nintendo’s technical specifications describe supported output.
More processing capacity also brings thermal considerations. Nintendo’s developer interview describes the dock’s cooling fan placement and the need to account for how people position the dock, but does not establish that the dock fan cools the handheld in every use mode. The console has two USB-C ports; the bottom port is used for charging or dock connection. Nintendo’s discussion of GameChat and cooling provides its design context.

Core specifications and what they mean in practice
| Specification | Switch 2 | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld display | 7.9-inch LCD; 1920 × 1080 | HDR10 and up to 120 Hz are supported features, not guarantees for every game. |
| Internal storage | 256 GB | Usable space is reduced by system data and installed content; capacity needs depend on your library. |
| Expansion | microSD Express | Check that a card is microSD Express; older microSD cards are not an equivalent Switch 2 expansion choice. |
| Game cards | Switch 2 and original Switch game cards, subject to compatibility | Physical format does not guarantee every original title works identically. |
| Battery estimate | Approximately 2–6.5 hours | Nintendo’s estimate varies with software and conditions; it is not a fixed runtime. |
| TV output | Up to 4K in supported conditions | Output capability does not promise native 4K rendering in each game. |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Consult Nintendo’s regional specifications for the full connection details. |
These figures are from Nintendo’s U.S. specifications and regional specifications. The 256 GB capacity is a substantial increase over the original Switch, but larger games can still make expansion useful.
Backward compatibility has limits
Switch 2 plays many original Switch games, but compatibility is not universal and behavior can differ by title. Some games have updates, while certain Switch 2 Edition upgrades are paid. Original Joy-Con can be paired wirelessly, but cannot attach to the new console. Accessories that rely on the old console’s physical rails or charging arrangement may not carry over as expected.
Before buying or upgrading a game, check Nintendo’s compatibility information for that specific title and accessory. Do not assume an update is free, that every feature behaves the same, or that the original dock is interchangeable with the Switch 2 dock.

The defining concept remains the same: one system moves between handheld, tabletop and TV play, with detachable controllers and physical game cards. Nintendo did not turn the Switch into a conventional home console or abandon its handheld roots. The LCD panel is also a notable choice: the screen gains resolution and HDR support without switching to OLED.

The redesign’s everyday impact depends on which parts of the system you use. A bigger, sharper handheld display and new games that take advantage of the extra processing capacity matter most to players who use handheld mode or want Switch 2 software. Mouse controls and GameChat add options for supported games and social play, rather than changing every game.
Is it a worthwhile upgrade?
Original Switch owners
The case is strongest if you want Switch 2 games, a larger 1080p handheld screen, or the improved performance ceiling. If your existing library and current play habits meet your needs, the new hardware alone may not make an immediate upgrade necessary.
Switch OLED owners
Consider what you value more: Switch 2’s higher resolution, HDR support, refresh-rate capability and new software, or OLED’s contrast and black levels. The newer LCD is not automatically preferable for every player.
Families and multiplayer households
GameChat, screen sharing and optional camera video can be useful, but communication features bring account, privacy and parental-control considerations. Original Joy-Con remain usable wirelessly, though they do not attach to the new system.
Players content with existing Switch games
If you primarily play games you already own and do not need Switch 2 exclusives or its new features, waiting is reasonable. Check compatibility and any upgrade cost for the particular games you care about rather than assuming a blanket free performance upgrade.
U.S. price and timing
