Netflix launched mobile versions of Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition on December 14, 2023. Netflix members could download the games on supported iPhone, iPad, and Android devices without a separate game fee, advertisements, or in-game purchases.
Netflix announced the deal on November 29, 2023. It was a mobile release, not a new console or PC launch through Netflix.
What Netflix added
The package was the mobile edition of Rockstar’s 2021 remastered collection, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It contained three complete games:
- Grand Theft Auto III: an open-world crime story set in Liberty City.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: a neon crime saga in a fictionalized 1980s Miami.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: a large-scale adventure inspired by early-1990s California.
Rockstar describes the Definitive Edition as having updated lighting and environmental effects, higher-resolution textures, longer draw distances, and controls influenced by Grand Theft Auto V. See the Rockstar Store product page for the collection’s edition details.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.

Rockstar’s launch notice confirms the December 14 availability on Netflix, iOS, and Android: Rockstar Newswire. Netflix described the initial release as global, but current country availability can differ because catalogs, licensing, stores, and device support change.
Did Netflix make the games free?
They were included at no additional game charge for people with an active Netflix membership. They were not free for someone without Netflix: access through Netflix required a paid, active membership. Netflix’s games have no advertisements or in-game purchases under the membership model. Netflix’s announcement is available at About Netflix.
The mobile games were also sold separately through mobile storefronts. A contemporary GameSpot report listed the standalone U.S. launch price as $19.99 per game. That is a historical launch-period figure, not a confirmed current price.

- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
How Netflix members downloaded the games
Android
- Open the Netflix app.
- Find the Mobile Games row or tap the Games shortcut.
- Select the GTA title and tap Get Game.
- Complete installation through Google Play.
- Open the game, sign in with the Netflix account if prompted, and choose a Netflix profile.
You can also search for the title directly in Google Play, install it, and authenticate with Netflix.

iPhone and iPad
- Open the Netflix app and find the Mobile Games row.
- Select the GTA title and tap Get Game or Play Game.
- Tap Get or the App Store download icon.
- Open the installed game, sign in with Netflix if requested, and select a profile.
Netflix ties save data to the selected profile. Deleting that profile permanently deletes its associated progress. The installation paths are documented in the Netflix Help Center.
Device, account, and storage requirements
- An active Netflix membership and an internet connection for downloading and installing.
- A compatible iPhone, iPad, or Android device with enough free storage.
- The current Netflix app plus access to the relevant App Store or Google Play listing.
- A profile whose maturity setting allows the mature-rated games.
Netflix currently recommends Android 9 or later, iOS 17 or later, and iPadOS 17 or later for the best experience across its games, while other support guidance gives lower general minimums. Requirements vary by title and can change, so use each game’s live store listing rather than treating those recommendations as a universal GTA cutoff. A title may be hidden when a device is incompatible or a profile’s maturity setting is too restrictive. The Netflix requirements and access guidance explains account and profile behavior.

- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
These are downloaded mobile games. They are separate from games that Netflix may offer through televisions or computers; Netflix’s broader platform information is at Netflix Games on TV and computers. Do not assume that the Netflix mobile GTA editions are playable on a TV or PC.
Netflix access versus buying the games separately
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix version | Existing Netflix subscribers who want all three games on a supported mobile device | Requires an active membership and depends on the titles remaining in the catalog |
| Standalone mobile purchase | Players who want the games without maintaining Netflix | Requires a separate purchase; current prices vary by region and storefront |
| Standalone PC or console edition | Players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch | It is a separate edition and purchase, not the Netflix mobile distribution |
Neither option is automatically cheaper. The answer depends on whether you already pay for Netflix, how long you expect to keep the subscription, your region’s prices, and whether you also use Netflix’s films and shows.
What Netflix did not replace
The Netflix arrangement did not put the trilogy’s console or PC editions inside Netflix. Rockstar and platform stores separately offer versions for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Rockstar’s product information is at store.rockstargames.com. The mobile Netflix release should therefore be understood as another distribution route for supported phones and tablets, not as a replacement for those editions.

If the games do not appear
- Update the Netflix app.
- Search the exact title in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Check the device’s operating-system version and free storage.
- Switch to an unrestricted adult Netflix profile and review maturity settings.
- Confirm that the Netflix membership is active.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign back in if authentication fails.
- Check the current Netflix Games catalog and the live store listing for regional, device, or catalog changes.
Netflix identifies incompatible devices, outdated apps, maturity settings, and games that are unavailable in a region or no longer listed as common reasons a title may not show. Its troubleshooting guidance is at Netflix Help Center.
Availability note for readers checking today
Netflix’s announcement establishes the December 14, 2023 launch. It does not guarantee permanent catalog inclusion. As of August 18, 2026, verify the live Netflix catalog and the relevant App Store or Google Play listing before downloading; availability, prices, requirements, and regional support can change.
Strategically, the trilogy gave Netflix a globally recognized premium game series as the service expanded beyond smaller casual and Netflix-branded releases. Contemporary reporting discussed that move in the context of Netflix’s broader gaming push; see CBS News.
