Kongregate Announces Kartridge, a Downloadable PC Game Store That Was Later Sunset

Announced in March 2018 as a downloadable PC store for indie games, Kartridge paired community features with generous introductory developer terms. It was later sunset, though the precise closure date and customer-library consequences are not established by the available sources.

Kongregate announced Kartridge on March 6, 2018, pitching it as a downloadable PC storefront built around indie-game discovery, community features and more flexible terms for developers. It was an initiative alongside Kongregate.com, not a replacement for the browser-game portal. Kartridge later was sunset; it is not an active PC storefront today.

What Kongregate announced in 2018

Kongregate described Kartridge as a community-driven platform for downloadable PC games. The idea was to make room for titles that did not fit comfortably within browser technology, while giving developers more control over how their games appeared and were sold. Players were invited to sign up for a beta; the March announcement was not the same as a full public launch. GamesBeat’s March 6, 2018 coverage reported the announcement and its initial pitch.

Kongregate said Kartridge would sit alongside Kongregate.com. The web portal, mobile publishing business and new PC storefront were distinct parts of the company’s business, not interchangeable names for the same service. The planned catalog could include premium, free-to-play, pay-what-you-want and ad-supported games. These were announced options, not proof that each model achieved equal uptake or maturity.

How Kartridge aimed to stand apart

Kartridge was presented as a more curated, community-oriented alternative in the PC storefront market, with particular emphasis on independent developers. Kongregate’s stated goals included editorial curation and algorithmic recommendations to help lesser-known games find players. Those were ambitions, not published performance results. The launch coverage also advertised no upload fees.

Area Kartridge’s announced proposition What the announcement establishes
Store pages and merchandising Developers could customize presentation and merchandising. A promised degree of control; not evidence of better sales.
Pricing and business models Support for premium, free-to-play, pay-what-you-want and ad-supported games. Announced flexibility, not proof every model worked equally well.
Discovery Editorial curation alongside algorithmic surfacing. A discovery strategy, without comparative reach or conversion data.
Community Chat, forums, achievements, rewards and ways for players to connect. Features in the announced vision; their presence and performance could vary by release.
Fees No upload fees were advertised. A launch-era claim, not a guarantee about every later term.

That made Kartridge an alternative storefront with some Steam-like ambitions, not simply a claim to be a better Steam. A favorable revenue split and additional community features could make a platform attractive to developers, but neither guarantees an audience. A new store also has to persuade players to install another launcher and build enough catalog, visibility and trust to create a durable market.

What the historical developer terms offered

In April 2018, Kongregate announced bonuses for qualifying games available before October 31, 2018. The terms were historical promotional offers, not a current developer contract. Kongregate’s announcement set out the thresholds and eligibility conditions.

Historical offer Announced terms Key qualification
First $10,000 per title 100% of net revenue Net revenue was not the sticker price: applicable taxes and relevant processing costs affected the calculation.
Qualifying Kartridge-exclusive titles 100% of the first $10,000, then 90% of the next $40,000 The offer was conditional on exclusivity and eligibility, including availability before October 31, 2018.
Standard share described after the offer 70% of revenue This was the announced standard share, not a statement of current terms.

Kongregate said developers could end exclusivity without a fixed exclusivity period. The 100% figure referred to a net-revenue tier, not the full amount a customer paid. The offer was per title and applied under its stated conditions; it should not be read as a universal guarantee to every developer. An official Kartridge royalties page also described a 100% net-revenue tier, but historical terms should not be mistaken for terms available today.

From announcement to closed beta

  1. March 6, 2018: Kongregate publicly announced Kartridge and invited users to sign up for a beta.
  2. April 24, 2018: Kongregate announced the revenue-share bonuses and said it planned an open beta for summer.
  3. May 2018: Contemporary trade coverage reported publisher and developer relationships connected with Kartridge, including Double Fine and Versus Evil.
  4. October 30, 2018: Kongregate described Kartridge as still being in closed beta in a post about the company’s launch-year activity. The October post is a useful reminder that an announced beta target is not the same as a public launch.

The distinction matters: “kicks off” refers to the start of the initiative, not evidence that Kartridge had already become a public competitor at announcement. The available timeline establishes an announcement, a planned open beta and a later closed-beta reference; it does not, by itself, establish the store’s eventual scale.

The company behind the pitch

Kongregate was founded in 2006 by Jim and Emily Greer and acquired by GameStop in 2010. At the time of the Kartridge announcement, it still operated its web gaming portal and a mobile publishing business. GamesBeat reported that the company had approximately 120 employees then. That context helps explain why Kongregate saw an opportunity to carry its web-game discovery and community experience into downloadable PC games, but it does not establish how GameStop funded or directed Kartridge.

What happened to Kartridge?

Kartridge was later sunset and is no longer an active PC storefront. PCGamingWiki’s Kartridge entry references a Kongregate helpdesk notice titled “Sunsetting Kartridge & Kartridge.com.” The exact official sunset date is not established here, so it should not be inferred from secondary discussion.

The available evidence also does not establish what happened to every customer’s library, account access or developer balance after the service ended. Kongregate’s Kartridge upload agreement contains legacy references and was last updated in February 2020; those references are not evidence that the storefront remained active afterward.

What Kartridge’s story says about storefronts

Kartridge’s proposition addressed real developer concerns: visibility, control over presentation and a larger share of sales. But the economics of a store are not just its commission rate. Players need reasons to visit, developers need buyers, and both groups need confidence that the platform will continue supporting downloads, updates, accounts and community systems. A social layer can help with discovery and retention, while also bringing moderation, infrastructure and support costs.

Those are structural challenges for any new storefront, not documented explanations for Kartridge’s sunset. The available sources do not establish why Kongregate ended the service or quantify its audience, sales or developer outcomes. What they do show is the gap between an attractive launch offer and the harder task of sustaining a two-sided platform over time.
