Start the game from Steam and choose Play Sid Meier’s Civilization V (Touch), rather than one of the standard DirectX launches. It supports touch-specific map panning, pinch zoom, unit selection, movement gestures, menu scrolling and escape commands. It is particularly useful on a Windows tablet or 2-in-1, although a mouse remains more precise for dense late-game screens.
How to launch Civilization V Touch mode
The original Civilization V launcher was removed from the normal Steam workflow beginning November 18, 2024. Steam now presents the former choices as launch options, including Touch. See the official explanation at Civilization V Launcher Removal.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Choose Sid Meier’s Civilization V.
- Click Play.
- Select Play Sid Meier’s Civilization V (Touch).
- If Steam does not ask each time, right-click the game, choose Properties, open General, and set the preferred launch option there.
Localized Steam clients may translate the label. An old desktop shortcut normally starts the DirectX 9 version; it does not reliably preserve a separately selected Touch preference.
Complete touch-control reference
The controls documented in Civilization V’s Steam update notes and the original 2012 demonstration are context-sensitive. A double-tap can enter movement mode in one situation and issue a move in another, so confirm the route before committing it. The update notes are available at Steam’s Civilization V news feed; the contemporary demonstration appears at GamesBeat.
#1 Best Overall
- Successful diplomacy will depend on players carefully managing relationships with other leaders
- Expanded visuals and immersive audio invite would-be kings to take up the reigns of power and forge a mighty empire
- An intuitive interface eases both new players and Civ veterans into the game
| Touch action | Typical result |
|---|---|
| Tap | Select a unit, press a button or activate an interface control. |
| Double-tap | Enter movement mode or issue a movement command, depending on the current screen and game state. |
| Tap a destination in movement mode | Issue the unit’s movement order. |
| Touch-drag a unit or destination | Preview a movement path or inspect contextual information before confirming. |
| One-finger drag | Move a scrollbar and interact with scrollable or tooltip-heavy controls. |
| Pinch or spread two fingers | Zoom the camera out or in. |
| Two-finger drag | Pan the map horizontally or vertically. |
| Two-finger tap | Cancel or leave a current command in the behavior described by the original demonstration. |
| Three-finger tap | Perform an escape/menu action, depending on context. |
| Two-finger swipe in menus | Scroll long menu content. |
The Touch interface also exposes gesture and momentum-speed settings, plus a gesture button in the main and in-game menus. Treat a dragged route as a preview until the game visibly accepts the order; this avoids accidental movement.
What touch play feels like
Exploring the map
Two-finger panning and pinch zoom are the strongest part of the interface. You can move across the hex map, change scale and tap terrain or units without reaching for a mouse. This is comfortable during relaxed exploration and routine turn management.
Moving units and handling combat
Select a unit, enter movement mode with the appropriate tap sequence, then tap a destination or drag to preview a route. Because the exact double-tap result depends on context, verify the path and destination before releasing or confirming. A mouse is easier when several units occupy adjacent tiles or when a small target must be selected precisely.

- ENDLESS REPLAYABILITY: Play as one of 43 historical leaders and wage war by land, sea, and air, conduct diplomacy & espionage, establish religious beliefs, and discover new technologies in your quest to build the most powerful empire the world has ever known.
- HUGE BATTLES: Wars between empires spread across land and sea. Ranged bombardment challenges you to develop clever strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield.
- DIPLOMACY: Negotiate with some of history’s most cunning rulers, each with a well-crafted plan for victory. City-states present a diplomatic battleground on which the major powers of the world will vie for supremacy.
- RELIGION: Cultivate Great Prophets and create a religion you can customize and enhance.
- ESPIONAGE: Send your spies into foreign cities for surveillance, to steal advanced technologies from your competitors, or to interfere with city-state alliances.
Managing cities and research
Touch can activate cities, production choices, citizen or specialist controls, research, social-policy choices, diplomacy and confirmation dialogs. These actions work, but Civilization V was not redesigned so every control is equally finger-friendly. Small buttons and crowded late-game panels are less comfortable on a compact display.
Scrolling menus and tooltips
One-finger interaction handles ordinary controls and scrollbars, while two-finger swipes can move long menu lists. Hover-style tooltip workflows are naturally less convenient without a mouse, particularly when information is packed into a small window.
Hardware and compatibility requirements
You need a Windows device with a functioning multi-touch digitizer. At least two simultaneous touch points are required for map panning and pinch zoom; three-finger menu gestures require three-point input. A responsive, medium-size screen is more important to comfort than simply meeting the old game specification.

- Biggest revamp in Civilization's history improves everything from graphics to artificial intelligence, with a game that's easier to play than ever
- Major interface changes make a more believable game world and easier game to navigate, with hex-based movement and naturally growing city borders
- All-new battle system makes combat quicker and more tactical than ever before. Cities can now attack units directly and weight of numbers is no longer guarantee of victory
Legacy Civilization V specifications
The official listings are historical requirements, not a guarantee of modern performance or touch usability. The minimum listing includes Windows XP SP3, Vista SP2 or Windows 7, a 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon X2, 2 GB RAM, 8 GB free storage, DirectX 9.0c and 256 MB-class supported graphics hardware. The recommended listing specifies a 1.8 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB RAM, DirectX 11 and 512 MB-class graphics hardware. See the official PC system requirements.
Separately, the Steam client requires Windows 10 or later from January 1, 2024. That client requirement should not be confused with Civilization V’s much older published game requirements; actual results also depend on drivers, resolution, cooling and graphics hardware. Steam’s game support page is at Steam Support for app 8930.

Touch mode versus mouse and keyboard
| Criterion | Touch mode | Mouse and keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Map panning | Natural two-finger gesture | Precise and familiar |
| Zooming | Fast pinch gesture | Reliable wheel or key control |
| Unit selection | Convenient on a tablet | More precise for small targets |
| Movement orders | Intuitive after learning confirmation gestures | Easier to verify precisely |
| Tooltips | Can be awkward on small displays | Hovering is usually easier |
| Dense menus | Usable, but finger-sized targets can frustrate | Generally superior |
| Long sessions | Works away from a desk | Better for precision-heavy sessions |
| Hybrid use | Usually the strongest arrangement: touch for the map, mouse or keyboard when menus become dense. | |
Touch is a good fit for a Windows convertible or tablet with a responsive capacitive display, a reasonably large panel and enough battery and cooling for long sessions. It is a poor fit for a tiny screen, inaccurate digitizer, single-touch panel or a setup that requires rapid precision throughout the late game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the Touch option is missing
- Confirm that you installed the Windows Steam version of Civilization V.
- Launch from the Steam Library instead of an old desktop shortcut.
- Open the game’s Properties and inspect the launch choice under General.
- If the choices still do not appear, verify the game files in Steam and restart the Steam client.
- Check that Windows recognizes touch input and test two-finger gestures outside the game.
- Try DirectX 9 or DirectX 10/11. If those also fail, the issue is broader than Touch mode.
- If you are using Proton, remote play or a virtual machine, treat native Windows Touch behavior as unsupported or unverified unless you have tested that environment.
The first three steps reflect the official post-launcher workflow; the remaining checks are practical troubleshooting rather than a guaranteed vendor fix.
When gestures behave incorrectly
- Windows may be receiving only single-touch input, or the digitizer and driver may be malfunctioning.
- The game may have started in a standard DirectX mode rather than Touch.
- A remote session, compatibility layer or virtual machine may not pass multi-touch events through.
- An external monitor, dock or screen protector may be changing where touch is delivered.
- You may be applying a two-finger map gesture while a menu expects a two-finger scroll, or vice versa.
- The game may technically run while the available screen area remains too small for comfortable controls.
Confirm multi-touch in Windows first, then restart Civilization V specifically with the Touch launch option. There is no universal fix for every hardware or compatibility combination.
Best Value
- Civilization V introduces hexagon tiles allowing for deeper strategy, more realistic gameplay and stunning organic landscapes for players to explore as they expand their empire
- Over $40 worth of DLC (downloadable content) and bonus content packs to enhance and extend your gameplay
- An intuitive interface eases both new players and Civ veterans into the game
- The addition of ranged bombardment allows players to fire weapons from behind the front lines, challenging players to develop clever new strategies to guarantee victory on the battlefield
- Choose one of eighteen historical civilizations to lead from the stone-age to the space age on your quest to build the world's most powerful empire
Verdict
Civilization V’s native Windows Touch mode is still available through Steam and remains useful for map navigation, zooming, unit selection and relaxed turn-based play. It does not turn every late-game panel into a tablet-native interface. For most players, the best setup is hybrid: use touch for the map and keep a mouse or keyboard available when precision, tooltips or crowded menus matter.
If you do not own the game, the Windows Steam edition is sold on Civilization V’s Steam page. No current price is stated here because it changes by region and promotion.
