How to solve the January 3 puzzle
1. Lock in the army ranks
GENERAL, MAJOR, PRIVATE, and CAPTAIN are strongly constrained military ranks. This is the clearest foothold and removes four entries quickly.
2. Test the Rihanna titles
DIAMOND, SOS, UMBRELLA, and WORK are song-title references associated with Rihanna. “Work” is especially easy to mistake for an ordinary verb, which is one of the puzzle’s deliberate overlaps.

3. Watch the singular clothing wording
JEAN, JOGGER, OVERALL, and SLACK make up the clothing category. The category requires singular forms, so do not change them to jeans, joggers, overalls, or slacks while checking the grid. OVERALL can also appear to be a general descriptive word, making it a useful trap.
4. Complete the remaining phrases
Once those eight entries are removed, BAR, BLANKET, NURSE, and WILLY all complete the phrase “WET ___.”
