Sequence on Google Cloud Marketplace: What the 2024 Web3 Gaming Launch Means in 2026

Sequence’s Google Cloud Marketplace launch brought managed EVM gaming tools into Google Cloud procurement. Here is what shipped, what it changed and what studios must still verify in 2026.

Sequence became available through Google Cloud Marketplace on October 24, 2024. The announcement put Sequence’s managed Web3 game-development stack—wallets, player accounts, transactions, marketplaces, blockchain data and engine integrations—inside Google Cloud’s partner procurement channel. It did not launch a new blockchain or Google Cloud gaming engine. In 2026, the launch is best understood as a dated procurement and integration milestone, with current ownership and listing status requiring separate verification.

What launched on October 24, 2024?

Sequence announced that its Web3 gaming platform was available through Google Cloud Marketplace. Sequence described the offering as an all-in-one, EVM-compatible stack for games, including embedded wallets, player accounts, gas sponsorship, smart-contract tools, marketplaces, analytics, blockchain data, and Unity, Unreal, web and mobile integrations.

The distinction matters:

  • Google Cloud supplies compute, storage, networking, databases, security, analytics and other infrastructure.
  • Google Cloud Marketplace is a catalog and commercial channel for partner software and services.
  • Sequence is the application-development layer that abstracts blockchain wallets, transactions, assets, marketplaces and game integrations.

The announcement followed a broader Sequence–Google Cloud partnership announced on March 19, 2024, which said Sequence’s game-development stack would be available to Google Cloud developers. (Sequence partnership announcement)

Timeline and current-status caveat

Date Event
March 19, 2024 Sequence announced its partnership with Google Cloud.
September 23, 2024 Google Cloud announced GameShift by Solana Labs on Marketplace as another Web3 gaming route.
October 24, 2024 Sequence announced Marketplace availability.
January 13, 2026 Sequence announced that Polygon Labs intended to acquire it. Sequence said products would continue operating, while noting customary closing conditions and an expected closing in the coming weeks.

The original Sequence Marketplace product URL is Google Cloud’s console listing. Current listing terms, billing structure and availability should be checked manually: the console page was not independently inspectable in the available review. The acquisition announcement alone also does not prove that the transaction closed.

What Sequence provides beyond ordinary cloud hosting

A cloud account can run a game backend, but it does not automatically solve blockchain-specific product and operational work. Sequence packages many of those functions into managed services and SDKs.

Wallets and player accounts

Sequence promotes embedded or “invisible” wallets that let players start with familiar login flows instead of seed phrases, browser extensions or pre-funded gas accounts. This can reduce onboarding abandonment, but it does not remove security responsibilities. Teams still need policies for authentication, recovery, custody, account portability, fraud and support. Invisible UX should not be presented as risk-free or automatically non-custodial.

Transactions, batching and sponsored gas

Gas sponsorship and batched transactions can make several blockchain actions feel like one game interaction. Before shipping, a studio must decide which actions it will sponsor, who pays when limits are exceeded, how bots are controlled and what players see when a transaction fails, stalls or is rejected.

Marketplaces and digital assets

Sequence documents several implementation levels:

  • A no-code hosted marketplace.
  • Custom marketplace boilerplate.
  • An SDK for embedding list, buy and related flows.
  • APIs that aggregate listings from Sequence and external sources such as OpenSea and Magic Eden.

The documentation covers fixed-price listings, offers and bids, cancellation, acceptance, ERC-2981 royalty information, platform fees and marketplace analytics. (Sequence marketplace documentation) A Marketplace purchase did not automatically give every game a finished, configured marketplace; the developer still chooses the product path, contracts, UX and operating rules.

Blockchain data and indexing

Indexers and real-time data services provide balances, ownership, transaction history, inventory, transfers, sales and marketplace activity without forcing the game to query raw chain data for every screen. Indexers can lag, chains can reorganize and RPC services can degrade. A production game should distinguish pending from finalized transactions and define behavior for stale inventory, metadata failures and chain outages.

Smart contracts and game-engine integrations

Sequence markets smart-contract tooling alongside integrations for Unity, Unreal, web and mobile, and says its stack supports EVM layer-1, layer-2 and layer-3/application chains. That is a vendor claim, not proof that every chain, SDK version, operating system or app-store flow has identical support. Check the current chain matrix and documentation before committing to a platform.

What Marketplace changes for a buyer

Marketplace can simplify discovery, vendor onboarding and procurement for an organization that already buys Google Cloud. Depending on the offer, account, geography and date, it may also provide a familiar route for private offers, channel purchasing or cloud-commitment administration. None of those benefits is automatic: Google Cloud commitment drawdown, taxes, support, contract terms and billing vary by offer structure and customer eligibility. Sequence’s Marketplace placement should therefore be treated as a procurement convenience, not evidence that Sequence is included in Google Cloud or free of charge.

Google Cloud’s general Marketplace policy has changed over time; its partner guidance discusses updated economics and channel-private-offer commitment drawdown, but those policies do not establish Sequence’s specific terms. (Google Cloud Marketplace partner guidance)

What “EVM-compatible” means

The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is the execution environment and tooling standard used by Ethereum and many other chains. EVM compatibility can let teams reuse Solidity contracts, wallet standards and development tools. It does not make chains interchangeable. Gas tokens, fees, finality, RPC behavior, NFT standards, bridge risks, indexing quality and chain-specific APIs still differ. Sequence’s statement that it supports EVM layer-1, layer-2 and layer-3/application chains should be checked against its current documentation for the exact chain a game needs.

A practical implementation path

  1. Define the player benefit. Choose a concrete use case such as cosmetic ownership, trading, loyalty rewards, cross-game items or tokenized access. Keep moment-to-moment gameplay off-chain unless on-chain state is genuinely necessary.
  2. Choose a chain strategy. Decide between one EVM chain and multiple chains, and document requirements for fees, custody, finality, throughput, geography and testnets.
  3. Create the project. Use Sequence Builder or the current developer dashboard, then confirm the organization, environment, API-key and account requirements in the live documentation. Sequence described Builder as enabling integration in minutes rather than months; that is positioning, not a delivery guarantee. (Sequence Builder announcement)
  4. Select the wallet model. Compare embedded wallets, external-wallet connections and social or email authentication. Specify recovery, portability, account linking and support procedures.
  5. Select marketplace scope. Use a hosted marketplace for speed, custom UI for control, the SDK for in-game flows or aggregated APIs when external liquidity is important.
  6. Configure sponsorship. Define eligible transactions, per-user and global limits, anti-abuse controls and fallback behavior when sponsorship is unavailable.
  7. Integrate the target client. Test login, wallet creation, inventory, signing, confirmation, retries and failure states in Unity, Unreal, web or mobile as appropriate.
  8. Test edge cases. Exercise reorgs, RPC outages, duplicate submissions, metadata failures, insufficient gas, delayed indexing, account recovery, marketplace disputes and refunds.
  9. Roll out gradually. Move from internal testnet to a closed beta and a limited production cohort. Monitor wallet conversion, transaction completion, support volume, fraud, sponsored-gas spend and player sentiment.

Limitations studios must budget for

  • Managed-service dependence: APIs, SDKs, supported chains, support levels and commercial terms can change, creating migration costs.
  • Gas economics: Sponsored transactions are a customer-acquisition and operating expense, with bot and farming exposure.
  • Indexer and chain reliability: In-game data can temporarily differ from finalized chain state.
  • Security: Smart contracts, signing flows, administrative keys, backend authorization and marketplace APIs each need separate review and, where appropriate, audits.
  • Platform and regulatory rules: Apple, Google Play, console platforms and jurisdictions impose different requirements on payments, assets and digital goods.
  • Royalty assumptions: ERC-2981 communicates royalty information but does not guarantee enforcement on every marketplace.
  • Player demand: Wallets and trading should solve a visible player problem; otherwise they add friction and reputational risk.

Sequence compared with alternatives

Option Best fit Main trade-off
Sequence Managed EVM gaming stack with wallets, assets, marketplaces and Unity/Unreal/web/mobile integrations. Less infrastructure control and dependence on Sequence APIs, roadmap and terms.
GameShift by Solana Labs Teams committed to Solana wallets, tokenized assets and on-chain markets. Solana-centered rather than Sequence’s EVM/multi-chain positioning. Google Cloud announced its Marketplace availability on September 23, 2024. (Google Cloud announcement)
Direct Google Cloud plus custom components Studios with strong blockchain and infrastructure teams that require maximum control. The team must source or build wallets, indexing, marketplace logic, transaction orchestration and integrations.
Modular multi-vendor stack Large teams avoiding dependence on one provider. More contracts, integrations, operational ownership and security work.
Aethir plus a Web3 stack Projects whose bottleneck is GPU capacity or low-latency cloud gaming. Aethir complements wallet and asset services; it is not a Sequence replacement. (Aethir)

Google Cloud’s own Web3 portfolio includes node and data infrastructure. Its Blockchain Node Engine is intended to simplify deployment of blockchain nodes, while the Web3 program advertises up to $200,000 over two years for eligible startup usage and $300 in credits for eligible new customers. (Google Cloud Web3) Those incentives apply to Google Cloud eligibility rules, not automatically to Sequence fees.

How to read Sequence’s performance claims

Sequence’s October 2024 launch article said Sequence-powered games had achieved 4.5× day-30 player retention, 7.5× average revenue per user, more than 20% additional revenue and up to a 4× increase in monetization potential. These are vendor-reported marketing claims, not independent industry benchmarks. The announcement does not by itself establish sample sizes, control groups, game selection, geography, period, platform mix or causation. Treat the figures as questions for due diligence rather than forecasts for a new game.

Pricing, availability and acquisition checks

No reliable current Sequence plan or rate was established from the checked public material; a pricing URL redirected to the main site. Confirm current Marketplace listing status, offer type, billing, minimums, support, data-processing terms and cancellation rights directly with Sequence or Google Cloud before procurement. Also confirm whether Polygon Labs’ announced acquisition has closed and which entity now provides contracts, support and data-processing commitments.

Bottom line for game teams

Sequence’s Marketplace launch reduced discovery and procurement friction for Google Cloud customers and offered a higher-level alternative to assembling every blockchain service themselves. It did not eliminate chain selection, wallet and recovery design, smart-contract security, gas budgeting, marketplace operations, platform compliance or the need to prove player value. Choose Sequence when a managed EVM-oriented gaming stack outweighs the loss of control; choose GameShift for a Solana-first strategy; and choose a custom Google Cloud or modular stack when ownership and specialization matter more than integration speed.
