Post Malone reportedly paid $2 million in 2023 for the unique 001/001 serialized version of The One Ring from Magic: The Gathering’s The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set. Toronto collector Brook Trafton opened it on June 16, 2023. That figure is a reported historical sale price, not a verified current valuation.
What makes Post Malone’s One Ring card unique?
Wizards of the Coast produced one serialized traditional-foil copy of The One Ring for the 2023 The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth release. It is numbered 001/001, making it a one-of-one collectible rather than one copy in a numbered run.
The card’s rules and artwork are tied to the Lord of the Rings crossover, while its identifying inscription uses the Black Speech of Sauron written in Tengwar letterforms. That combination—not merely the card name—defines the famous collectible.
Who found the card?
Brook Trafton pulled the card in Toronto on June 16, 2023, according to The Washington Post. The discovery happened shortly after the set’s release and turned an already high-profile crossover product into a global collecting story.

How much did Post Malone pay?
Post Malone bought Trafton’s card for a reported $2 million in 2023. Star City Games attributed that price to The Notable Group, Trafton’s marketing agency, and The Washington Post also reported the $2 million sale.
The transaction establishes what was reported for that specific sale at that time. It does not establish what the card would fetch in a later auction, nor does it provide a guaranteed current market value. No reliable current appraisal is established by those reports.

Could the One Ring still be pulled from a booster?
No. Wizards of the Coast says the one-of-one card has been found and is no longer available in packs. The original promotion placed it in one English-language, non-Special Edition Collector Booster.
A current Collector Booster can contain cards from the wider Tales of Middle-earth set, but buying one is not a route to Malone’s card. The unique 001/001 copy is an individual collectible that has already been removed from the unopened-booster hunt.

What is known about its grading and later appearances?
Star City Games reported that PSA slabbed the card and described it as Mint 9. That is a reported certification detail, not an independent appraisal or a promise that the grade determines value.
In coverage published in August 2026, PC Gamer reported that Malone showed the card during a Commander game while it remained in a smaller slab. The report documents that appearance; it does not establish current ownership arrangements, insurance, or a new market price.
Why the card became a landmark MTG collectible
- True scarcity: 001/001 means there is no second serialized copy in the run.
- Recognizable license: The card combines Magic’s trading-card audience with Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings fandom.
- Clear provenance: Trafton’s documented pull and the reported sale to Malone give the card a widely followed ownership history.
- Distinctive production: The traditional foil treatment, Black Speech text, Tengwar lettering, and serial number make it visibly different from ordinary copies of The One Ring.
