The RTX 4070 Ti Super is the stronger choice for most gaming builds: it leads the RTX 3090 in aggregate gaming benchmarks, ray tracing and power efficiency, and it supports DLSS Frame Generation. The RTX 3090’s case is its 24GB of VRAM, which can matter more than gaming speed for large AI models, 3D scenes and other memory-heavy work. If you already own a 3090 and mainly play rasterized games, the 4070 Ti Super is not a major upgrade.

Specifications are GPU-level figures; board-partner cards can differ in dimensions, cooling, power limits and connectors. NVIDIA lists the 4070 Ti Super’s specifications and 700W recommended system power on its RTX 4070 family page. Tom’s Hardware documents the 4070 Ti Super’s architecture and launch specifications in its review; its RTX 3090 review covers the older card’s memory and power figures.
Which card is faster in games?
In Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 aggregate GPU hierarchy, the 4070 Ti Super leads in both rasterized rendering and ray tracing. These averages indicate the overall relationship across that test suite, not a guaranteed result in every game: engine, settings, resolution, CPU limits and upscaling can change the gap.
| Aggregate test | RTX 4070 Ti Super | RTX 3090 | 4070 Ti Super lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1440p raster | 104 fps | 91.5 fps | About 14% |
| 4K raster | 58.5 fps | 53.1 fps | About 10% |
| 1440p ray tracing | 60 fps | 47.4 fps | About 27% |
| 4K ray tracing | 32.2 fps | 26.3 fps | About 22% |
These figures are Tom’s Hardware hierarchy averages, not per-game guarantees. See its GPU hierarchy for the benchmark context. The raster lead is moderate rather than a dramatic generational jump; ray tracing is the more distinct gaming advantage for the newer card.

Rasterized games
For conventional rendering without ray tracing, expect a modest aggregate advantage for the 4070 Ti Super. Some titles will be closer, and CPU-limited games may show little difference, especially at lower resolutions. At 4K, the 3090’s bandwidth and memory capacity do not overturn the 4070 Ti Super’s lead in the cited overall results.
Ray tracing
The 4070 Ti Super’s advantage is larger in the hierarchy’s ray-tracing tests. Its newer Ada architecture and third-generation RT cores help it pull ahead of the 3090’s second-generation hardware. The exact benefit still depends on the game and how demanding its effects are.
DLSS and frame generation
Both cards support DLSS Super Resolution, which renders at a lower resolution and upscales the image. The 4070 Ti Super additionally supports NVIDIA’s standard DLSS Frame Generation in compatible games; the 3090 does not have the Ada-specific optical-flow hardware used by that implementation. NVIDIA positions the 4070 family around Ada and DLSS 3 and describes frame generation in its RTX 40-series announcement.
Generated frames can make supported games look smoother, but they are not the same as frames rendered conventionally by the GPU. Frame generation can add latency or visual artifacts, so judge responsiveness and image quality as well as the displayed frame rate. Tom’s Hardware discusses the trade-offs in its 4070 Ti Super testing. Ray Reconstruction is a separate, game- and driver-dependent feature; it should not be confused with frame generation.

Is 24GB of VRAM better than 16GB?
The RTX 3090 has 24GB of VRAM—50% more capacity than the 4070 Ti Super’s 16GB—as well as a wider memory bus and higher bandwidth. Those are meaningful advantages when a workload needs the extra room. They do not automatically make the 3090 faster: when a task fits comfortably within 16GB, the 4070 Ti Super’s newer architecture and lower rated power can matter more.
- For most gaming: 16GB is adequate for many 1440p games and much 4K gaming, but demanding settings, ray tracing, high-resolution textures and mods can change memory use.
- For AI: 24GB can allow larger models, batches or other configurations to fit in memory. Whether the 3090 is faster depends on the framework, precision, model and whether the task is compute- or memory-limited.
- For 3D and content creation: Large scenes or GPU jobs that exceed 16GB may run on the 3090 where they fail or need reduced settings on the 4070 Ti Super. Software support and the specific application still matter.
More VRAM means more headroom and broader compatibility with memory-heavy workloads, not a guarantee of longer useful life. Tom’s Hardware’s RTX 3090 review describes the card’s 24GB configuration and its relevance beyond ordinary gaming.
Power, cooling and PC fit
The 4070 Ti Super’s rated board power is 285W versus 350W for the RTX 3090, a 65W difference in rated GPU power. The 4070 Ti Super reference specification calls for a 700W system power supply. Actual consumption and connector requirements vary by board-partner model, so check the exact card rather than relying on the GPU name alone. The lower rating can mean less heat released into the case during sustained GPU work, but it does not establish the noise level of every model.
- Confirm the card’s length and thickness, plus clearance from case fans, radiators and other components.
- Check the PSU’s capacity, quality and appropriate PCIe power cables. For a 16-pin-equipped 4070 Ti Super, make sure the connector is fully seated and not sharply bent at the plug.
- For either card, check the specific model’s cooler, power limit and connector setup; partner designs vary.
- A used 3090 merits particular attention to fan condition, memory temperatures and thermal-pad service history, if known.
Should you upgrade from a 3090?
From RTX 3090 to RTX 4070 Ti Super
For rasterized gaming alone, this is a side-grade to moderate upgrade, not a transformation: the cited hierarchy shows roughly 10–14% aggregate gains, while VRAM capacity falls from 24GB to 16GB. The switch makes more sense if you want stronger ray tracing, DLSS Frame Generation, lower rated power, or a newer card with retailer or manufacturer coverage. Consider the net cost after selling the 3090, not just the new card’s price.

From RTX 4070 Ti Super to RTX 3090
This is generally a gaming downgrade. Consider a 3090 instead only if its 24GB capacity directly benefits your AI or professional workload, or if it is substantially cheaper and you accept used-card condition and higher power use.
Buying one in 2026
Launch MSRPs—$799 for the 4070 Ti Super and $1,499 for the 3090—are historical reference points, not current value guidance. Prices vary by region, stock, seller and condition, and the available evidence does not establish a stable current market average. Compare the exact listing’s price with its warranty, return terms and condition. A used 3090 should be meaningfully cheaper than a 4070 Ti Super to account for age, power use and used-card risk; one priced close to the newer card is difficult to justify for gaming.
Before buying a used RTX 3090, look for a return window, seller reputation, transferable warranty where applicable, and clear information about repairs or prior heavy use. If you can test it, check for stable operation under load, abnormal fan noise, artifacts and temperature problems. Mining history alone does not prove a card is faulty, but unknown history makes a return option and condition checks more valuable. For a 4070 Ti Super, verify whether the listing is new, refurbished or marketplace-sold, then check the exact model’s dimensions, connectors and coverage.
