For gaming performance close to an RTX 3090, look at the GeForce RTX 4070 Super or RTX 5070. If you need the RTX 3090’s 24GB of VRAM, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX or GeForce RTX 4090 is a closer fit; the RTX 4090 is also a substantial Nvidia upgrade. There is no single equivalent for every workload: gaming speed, ray tracing, memory capacity, software compatibility and power draw point to different cards.
Quick comparison: which RTX 3090 alternative fits?
| GPU | Raster gaming versus RTX 3090 | VRAM | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 4070 Super | Near-match at 1080p and 1440p; behind at 4K | 12GB | Similar gaming performance with lower power use | Half the RTX 3090’s VRAM |
| GeForce RTX 5070 | Modestly faster in the cited raster suite | 12GB | Current Nvidia features at roughly RTX 3090-class gaming speed | Half the VRAM |
| Radeon RX 7900 XTX | Clearly faster in raster gaming | 24GB | AMD alternative for 4K raster performance and memory capacity | No CUDA or DLSS; ray tracing and application support differ |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | Clearly faster in raster gaming | 16GB | Current AMD gaming upgrade | Less VRAM; not a CUDA substitute |
| GeForce RTX 4090 | Much faster in raster and ray tracing | 24GB | Nvidia upgrade that retains 24GB | High purchase cost, size and power requirements |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | Faster, especially in ray tracing | 16GB | Stronger current Nvidia gaming and RT performance | Does not match 24GB capacity |
Performance descriptions are based on Tom’s Hardware’s published hierarchy, not a guarantee for every game. Its test system uses a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and a mix of high and ultra settings; results vary with game, resolution, CPU, settings, upscaling and frame generation. See the GPU hierarchy and test methodology.
What does “equivalent” mean?
A card can match the RTX 3090 in one kind of gaming and fall short in another. Decide which of these you mean before buying:
- Similar average gaming FPS: the RTX 4070 Super is close in the cited raster results at 1080p and 1440p; the RTX 5070 is somewhat faster in that suite.
- 4K raster gaming: the RTX 5070 is close to or slightly ahead of the RTX 3090 in the cited results. The RTX 4070 Super is behind at 4K.
- Ray tracing: the RTX 5070 Ti or a higher-end card is a more compelling Nvidia step up. The RX 9070 XT improves on the RX 7900 XTX in the cited RT results, but software support still depends on the application.
- VRAM capacity: the RX 7900 XTX and RTX 4090 both have 24GB; the RTX 5090 has 32GB. The RTX 4070 Super and RTX 5070 have 12GB, while the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT have 16GB.
- Nvidia software compatibility: CUDA-dependent tools, OptiX workflows and some creator applications can make an Nvidia card the practical choice regardless of game FPS.
- Lower power use or purchase value: check the exact partner card and current local price. A similar performance tier is not automatically a good-value replacement.
How fast is the RTX 3090 today?
The RTX 3090 remains a capable high-end card for ordinary rasterized gaming at 1440p and 4K. Its 24GB of GDDR6X memory can also be useful for large scenes and other memory-heavy work. That capacity does not make it automatically faster in games: newer GPUs can deliver similar or higher frame rates with less VRAM.
#1 Best Overall
Nvidia lists the desktop RTX 3090 as an Ampere card with 10,496 CUDA cores, up to a 1.70GHz boost clock, 24GB of GDDR6X on a 384-bit interface, 350W board power and a recommended 750W system power supply. Its launch MSRP was $1,499, not a current buying-price guide. Check the RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti specifications for the listed card details.
For an owner, replacing an RTX 3090 with a similarly performing 12GB card is usually a sidegrade in raw gaming performance and a downgrade in capacity. A switch can still make sense for lower power draw, newer display or upscaling features, or better performance in a particular game or application.
How the gaming comparisons stack up
Tom’s Hardware reports normalized performance scores, with the RTX 3090 scoring 60.3 at 1080p Ultra, 54.7 at 1440p Ultra and 47.9 at 4K Ultra in its raster suite. The table below converts its selected scores into an approximate percentage of that RTX 3090 baseline at each resolution. These are suite averages, not promises of the same FPS in a particular title.

Ray tracing changes the picture. In the same hierarchy, the RTX 3090 scores 52.9, 47.0 and 41.0 at 1080p, 1440p and 4K RT respectively. The RTX 4070 Super scores 57.7, 43.2 and 34.4: near or ahead at 1080p in this suite, but behind at 1440p and 4K. The RTX 5070 scores 58.9, 51.1 and 35.4, likewise showing why one blanket “equivalent” label misses resolution differences. The RX 7900 XTX scores 56.0, 50.1 and 42.6; the RX 9070 XT scores 61.9, 55.1 and 47.0. Treat those as results for this test suite, not a universal ranking across games.
Closest Nvidia alternatives
RTX 4070 Super: closest raster sidegrade
In Tom’s hierarchy it is very close to the RTX 3090 at 1080p and 1440p raster performance, while falling behind at 4K. Its 12GB VRAM is a substantial capacity reduction from 24GB. It makes the most sense if your priority is similar gaming speed with a more efficient card, and your games or applications fit comfortably within 12GB.
RTX 5070: a current-generation near-match
The RTX 5070 edges the RTX 3090 in the cited raster suite, including at 4K, but still has 12GB rather than 24GB. Its newer Blackwell-generation feature set can be attractive for supported games; it is not a memory-equivalent replacement for large local AI models, scenes or other workloads that need more than 12GB.

- Digital Maximum Resolution - 7680 X 4320
- Output- Displayport X 3 (V1.4A) / Hdmi 2.1 X 1
- Memory Interface- 384-Bit
- Package Quantity-1
RTX 5070 Ti: stronger ray tracing, not equivalent memory
The RTX 5070 Ti scores 71.9, 65.7 and 57.3 in Tom’s 1080p, 1440p and 4K RT hierarchy, above the RTX 3090 at each of those resolutions. It has 16GB of VRAM, not 24GB. Nvidia’s newer DLSS 4.5 and Multi-Frame Generation features are relevant only in supported games and modes; generated frames do not equal native-rendered frames and do not remove the need for a sound base frame rate.
RTX 4090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090: upgrades rather than equivalents
The RTX 4090 is the clearest Nvidia replacement when you need 24GB and want substantially more gaming, ray-tracing or CUDA performance. Nvidia specifies 450W total graphics power and recommends an 850W system power supply, so check the PSU and case as well as the price. Its availability and street price can vary sharply; do not assume it can be bought at launch MSRP.
The RTX 5080 is a major gaming upgrade in the cited raster hierarchy, but its 16GB does not match the RTX 3090’s capacity. The RTX 5090 is far beyond an equivalent-class purchase: it offers 32GB and much higher performance, but is aimed at buyers who specifically need maximum throughput and can accept the cost and power demands.
Rank #4
The RTX 3090 Ti is not a like-for-like substitute for the RTX 3090: Nvidia lists 10,752 CUDA cores and 450W graphics-card power, versus 10,496 cores and 350W for the RTX 3090, with 24GB on both. It is a faster same-generation variant, but should be evaluated on actual used price, condition and power needs.
Closest AMD alternatives
RX 7900 XTX: the 24GB AMD option
The RX 7900 XTX is clearly faster than the RTX 3090 in Tom’s raster hierarchy and preserves the 24GB capacity. AMD lists 96 compute units, a 384-bit memory interface and a minimum recommended 800W power supply in its RX 7900 XTX specifications. It suits raster-heavy gaming and memory-intensive work that does not require CUDA. Ray tracing, DLSS and compatibility with Nvidia-specific creator tools are important reasons not to treat it as a full feature-for-feature replacement.
RX 9070 XT: a current gaming upgrade with 16GB
The RX 9070 XT is faster than the RTX 3090 in the cited raster results, and its ray-tracing results are stronger than the RX 7900 XTX’s in that hierarchy. It has 16GB, so it is a gaming upgrade but not a 24GB substitute. AMD lists 304W total board power and a recommended 750W power supply; see its RX 9070 XT specifications. It is a sensible current AMD choice if 16GB is adequate and your applications do not require Nvidia-specific software.
Best Value
Choose by workload
- 1440p gaming: RTX 4070 Super is a close raster match; RTX 5070 is modestly faster in the cited suite. Choose based on price, features and whether 12GB is enough.
- 4K raster gaming: RTX 5070 is close to the RTX 3090 in the cited results. RX 7900 XTX or RX 9070 XT offers a clearer raster performance step up; the former retains 24GB.
- Ray-traced gaming: RTX 5070 Ti or higher is a stronger Nvidia direction. RX 9070 XT is an AMD option with improved RT results over RX 7900 XTX in the cited suite, but check performance in the games you play.
- Local AI or large 3D scenes: favor capacity and software compatibility. RTX 4090 or RX 7900 XTX retains 24GB; RTX 5090 provides 32GB. A 12GB or 16GB card can be unsuitable if the workload exceeds its available memory.
- Blender, CUDA or OptiX workflows: prioritize application support, not gaming FPS; an Nvidia GPU may be required or substantially more convenient for a CUDA/OptiX-dependent setup.
- Streaming: confirm the encoder and software features your streaming workflow uses. Do not assume gaming benchmark rank alone determines streaming suitability.
- Low-power system: compare the specific card’s power rating and PSU guidance. The RTX 3090 is rated at 350W; a lower-power replacement may reduce system demands, but check the chosen model’s specifications.
- Used-card buyer: compare the asking price with newer alternatives and account for condition, warranty and return protection rather than paying solely for 24GB.
Should you replace an RTX 3090?
If the card already meets your needs, a 4070 Super or RTX 5070 is usually a lateral move in gaming performance, not a clear raw-FPS upgrade. The newer cards may still be attractive for efficiency and current-generation features, but their 12GB capacity can constrain workloads that use the 3090’s 24GB. For a meaningful Nvidia performance upgrade while retaining 24GB, the RTX 4090 is the straightforward fit; the RTX 5080 is faster for gaming but drops to 16GB. On AMD, RX 7900 XTX keeps 24GB and raises raster performance, while RX 9070 XT is a gaming upgrade with 16GB.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the workload: check whether the priority is a named game’s FPS, ray tracing, CUDA, rendering, AI or memory capacity. Compare benchmarks at the same resolution and settings.
- Check VRAM headroom: do not replace 24GB with 12GB or 16GB if the software or projects you use already need more memory.
- Verify power and fit: check the exact card’s dimensions, case clearance, PSU recommendation and available power connectors. Partner models can differ from reference specifications.
- Check CPU and monitor limits: at 1080p, a CPU bottleneck can obscure GPU differences; make sure the card suits your display resolution and refresh rate.
- Assess used-card risk: request a working demonstration or return option, inspect fan noise, connector condition and evidence of repair or modification, and ask about warranty transfer. For a used RTX 3090, also check memory temperatures under load and whether the seller has buyer-protection terms.
- Compare actual prices locally: launch MSRP is not a reliable substitute for current street pricing, especially for discontinued or scarce models. Avoid paying a premium without comparing warranty and condition.
These recommendations concern desktop graphics cards. Laptop GPUs with similar names can have different power limits and performance, and workstation RTX Pro, RTX A-series or Tesla cards are not direct consumer gaming equivalents merely because their memory capacity is similar.
