Valve’s second-generation Steam Machine is no longer merely “on track”: its launch process began on June 29, 2026. Valve missed the earlier early-2026 expectation, then met its later summer commitment by sending purchase opportunities to reservation-queue customers. The catch is availability: limited initial production and a randomized queue mean many people still cannot buy one immediately, and Valve expects fulfillment to continue through the rest of 2026.
What happened to the Steam Machine release date?
Valve announced the Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame on November 12, 2025, initially targeting 2026 and later discussing an early-2026 or first-half window. Component costs and supply problems softened that timetable. On June 5, 2026, Valve reaffirmed a summer launch, and on June 29 it began sending purchase emails to customers in the reservation queue.
That produces two accurate answers to “Did it launch on time?” Against the earlier early-2026 expectation, no. Against Valve’s later summer-2026 commitment, yes. The original announcement promised a 2026 release rather than a specific day (Valve’s November 2025 announcement).
Key dates
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| November 12, 2025 | Valve announced the new Steam Machine hardware lineup. |
| Early 2026 | The earlier timing expectation became uncertain as memory and storage costs rose. |
| June 5, 2026 | Valve reaffirmed a summer 2026 launch. |
| June 22, 2026 | Valve published final U.S. pricing and reservation rules. |
| June 25, 2026 | Original reservation signups closed at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. |
| June 29, 2026 | The first purchase invitations began going out. |
“Launched” does not mean broadly in stock
Valve launched the product through a reservation system rather than an unrestricted retail sale. Eligible customers joined a model-specific queue; Valve randomized the order after signups closed and began offering machines as units became available. A reservation position meant Valve intended to offer that customer a machine. A waitlist position meant the customer was beyond the available quantity for the initial production run.

Valve said purchase invitations would continue throughout the remainder of 2026. Late-July reporting indicated that catching up with the reservation queue could take until the end of the year, but that is not a guarantee that every waitlisted customer will receive a machine by December (PC Gamer’s queue update; Tom’s Hardware report).
Status checked August 16–18, 2026: The Steam Machine has launched. Valve is still fulfilling reservation orders, and the queue may continue through the end of 2026. That is not the same as normal open retail stock.
How the reservation system worked
Eligibility and regional queues
- You needed a Steam account in good standing.
- Your account needed at least one Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026.
- Valve allowed one signup per household.
- Queues were separate for North America, the United Kingdom/European Union, and Australia.
- South Korea was excluded from shipping; customers in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong were directed to Komodo, Valve’s official distributor.
Signups after June 25 went to the back of the waitlist. Customers could enter multiple model queues, but that did not guarantee multiple machines. After randomization, Valve assigned the highest-end model for which the customer received a reservation spot and removed that person from the other queues. Model changes were not freely available without risking the queue position.

The 72-hour purchase window
When Valve sent a purchase opportunity, the customer had 72 hours to complete checkout. Missing that deadline canceled the reservation and allowed Valve to offer the unit to the next person. A waitlist position, unlike a reservation, did not promise a 2026 purchase.

Why the timing changed and the price rose
Valve attributed the delay and constrained launch volume to rapidly rising RAM and storage costs, difficulty sourcing some components at any price, and lower-than-planned initial production. The company said its original assumptions relied on the historical pattern of PC components becoming cheaper over time; that pattern changed sharply during development. Ars Technica connected the timing uncertainty to broader memory and storage supply pressure (Ars Technica, March 2026).
As a result, $1,049 is not an unexplained launch premium: it reflects the component economics Valve described. It is also a starting price before taxes, shipping, extra storage beyond the selected model or additional controllers.

Valve presents the Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming, not a conventional closed console. It runs SteamOS on PC hardware and is designed for a living-room, controller-first experience while retaining the openness of the Steam ecosystem. That means it does not receive the same kind of hardware subsidy or fixed-platform guarantees associated with some consoles.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Steam Verified is guidance, not a universal guarantee
Valve expanded Steam Verified to cover the Steam Machine and Steam Frame. The label is intended to indicate whether a game runs well out of the box, has readable interface text and offers sensible default settings (PC Gamer’s coverage).
Verified does not mean every Steam title will behave like a console game. Compatibility can still vary with Proton and Linux support, anti-cheat, third-party launchers, DRM, post-verification patches, display resolution, performance settings, peripherals and mods. Check the games you actually play rather than treating the label as a guarantee for the entire store.
Performance expectations
Valve’s GDC 2026 hardware presentation described the Steam Machine as offering approximately six times the performance of Steam Deck (Valve’s GDC 2026 presentation). That is Valve’s positioning claim, not an independent universal benchmark. It should not be converted into a promise of six times the frame rate, native 4K in every game or identical results across resolutions, quality presets, upscaling and frame-generation settings.

Should you buy, wait or choose something else?
Buying makes sense if you:
- Already have a reservation and want a compact, turnkey SteamOS living-room PC.
- Accept the $1,049 starting price and the possibility of waiting for your purchase email.
- Primarily play games that are Verified or known to work well through SteamOS and Proton.
- Prefer a Valve-supported appliance over selecting and assembling PC components.
Waiting is sensible if you:
- Need a gaming PC immediately or do not have a reservation.
- Require broad open retail availability rather than queue-based purchasing.
- Expect every game, launcher and multiplayer anti-cheat system to work with console-like consistency.
- Want guaranteed component replacement or a conventional desktop upgrade path; verify serviceability before buying.
Alternatives
- Existing gaming PC: More flexible and upgradeable, but usually less turnkey for a television setup.
- Steam Deck connected to a TV: A lower-cost way into SteamOS with portability, but substantially less performance for demanding living-room games.
- Traditional consoles: PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X offer standardized living-room software and hardware, but use closed ecosystems and do not provide direct access to a full Steam library.
- DIY small-form-factor PC: Offers broader component and operating-system choices, potentially better performance-per-dollar, and more build effort and configuration responsibility.
Prices for those alternatives change and should be checked separately. The central Steam Machine decision is therefore not whether Valve will launch it: that happened on June 29. It is whether the queue wait, $1,049 entry price and PC-style compatibility trade-offs fit your use case.
