Sony’s Project Q is no longer an unreleased handheld. The 2023 project became the PlayStation Portal Remote Player, released in the United States on November 15, 2023, at a launch MSRP of $199.99. Portal is a handheld streaming accessory for PS5—not a portable console that installs and runs PS5 games locally.
What happened to Sony’s Project Q?
Sony introduced Project Q on May 24, 2023, as a dedicated device for streaming games from a PS5 over Wi-Fi. On August 23, 2023, Sony announced the retail name, release date and U.S. price: PlayStation Portal Remote Player, launching November 15, 2023, for $199.99. The announcement is documented in Sony’s launch post.

Project Q, Q Lite and Portal are not the same terms
- Project Q: Sony’s public development or announcement name for the device.
- Q Lite: A name used in reporting and leaks, not an officially confirmed Sony product name.
- PlayStation Portal: The official retail product.
There is no verified 2026 announcement of a separate device still called Project Q.

The $199.99 figure is the verified U.S. launch MSRP, not a guaranteed current price in every country or at every retailer. Check Sony’s official buying page for current availability. A Midnight Black edition is listed separately at Sony Direct, but a current price should not be assumed without checking the live listing.

Portal’s real cost depends on what you already own. Standard Remote Play requires a PS5, while cloud streaming requires a PlayStation Plus Premium membership and eligible games. If you need both a PS5 and Portal, this is not a $199.99 replacement for a console.

Sony markets an 8-inch LCD capable of 1080p play at up to 60 fps. Actual streamed image quality and frame consistency depend on the network and game. Sony’s instruction manual documents the battery, ports and wireless standards. Another official manual, Sony’s alternate regional version, shows the different approximate weight figure. Sony does not provide a dependable official gameplay-runtime guarantee, so battery capacity should not be presented as a fixed number of hours.
Sony has not publicly established an exact processor model, RAM amount, internal storage capacity, GPU, cellular modem or expandable-storage system for Portal. Those are not meaningful local-console specifications because the game normally runs elsewhere.
How PlayStation Portal works
Remote Play from a PS5
- Sign in with a PlayStation Network account and use a compatible PS5.
- Install the game on the PS5. The console performs the game processing.
- Connect the PS5 to broadband internet and leave it on or in Rest Mode with Remote Play enabled.
- Connect Portal to Wi-Fi. It receives the video and audio stream and sends controller input back to the PS5.
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband Wi-Fi requirement and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Download speed alone is not decisive: upload performance from the PS5, latency, interference, congestion and router placement all affect play. An Ethernet connection for the PS5 can improve the console side of Remote Play, but it cannot repair a weak Portal-to-router connection.

Cloud Streaming
Later software updates added cloud streaming for selected PS5 games to PlayStation Plus Premium members. Sony’s current Portal page describes eligible titles from the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and selected digital PS5 games in a user’s library.
- A Premium subscription is required.
- Only eligible games can be streamed; the entire PS5 library is not available.
- Catalog, account and regional eligibility can change.
- The game runs on Sony’s cloud infrastructure rather than on your PS5 for that session.
- Cloud streaming remains sensitive to latency and connection stability.
Remote Play and cloud streaming are therefore separate modes: one uses your PS5, and the other uses Sony’s servers under Premium eligibility rules.
Is Portal a standalone gaming handheld?
No—not in the conventional sense. Portal is physically handheld, but it is fundamentally a remote player. It does not provide a general-purpose local game library like a PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck or Windows gaming handheld. It also is not an Android device for installing ordinary apps, and it does not natively run Steam, Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce Now.

Its original purpose required a PS5. Cloud streaming broadens the use case for Premium subscribers, but it still does not turn Portal into an unrestricted portable console. Streaming can also introduce input delay, compression artifacts and disconnections that do not occur with local rendering.
What games can Portal play?
- Compatible PS5 games installed on your PS5 through Remote Play.
- Compatible PS4 games installed on the PS5, subject to game compatibility.
- Selected PS5 games through PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming.
Games requiring PlayStation VR or PS VR2 are not compatible, and titles that depend on additional peripherals may not work correctly. Games streamed to the PS5 through PlayStation Plus were originally excluded from Portal Remote Play; cloud streaming is now a separate route for selected titles.
Portal Remote Play connects to PS5 consoles, not PS4 consoles. Sony’s compatibility guidance is at this support page.
What changed after launch?
Portal is not frozen at its November 2023 feature set. Sony’s software history documents additions including:
- Support for more public Wi-Fi authentication flows.
- Battery-percentage display.
- PlayStation Link device settings.
- Cloud Streaming beta and subsequent broader cloud functionality.
- Improved cloud-streaming game selection and account features.
- Game-invite notifications and interface refinements.
Sony’s March 2026 update added a 1080p High Quality mode for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. On Portal, open Quick Menu → Max Resolution → 1080p High Quality, then restart the Remote Play or cloud session for the change to apply. This setting is a quality ceiling, not a guarantee that every network delivers perfect 1080p.

- Fast internet but poor play: latency, Wi-Fi interference, upload quality and congestion can matter more than download speed.
- Public Wi-Fi: some networks require a captive-portal or other validation step. Sony says a phone or tablet may be needed to complete authentication, and initial setup should be completed first.
- Mobile hotspot: data use and inconsistent latency can make sessions unreliable.
- Competitive games: fast reaction-based games expose latency more than turn-based or slower single-player games.
- Audio expectations: Sony identifies PlayStation Link devices and wired 3.5-mm headsets as supported paths; do not assume universal Bluetooth-earbud compatibility.
Portal works best when the PS5 is wired to the router, Portal has a strong nearby Wi-Fi connection, and other traffic is not saturating the network.

Should you buy PlayStation Portal?

Portal’s advantages are its large screen, integrated DualSense controls, haptics and simple PlayStation-focused interface. Its trade-offs are streaming latency, dependence on a strong network, the original PS5 requirement and recurring Premium cost for cloud streaming.
Alternatives to Portal
Phone plus controller
A smartphone paired with a Backbone-style controller is smaller and can run multiple remote-play and cloud-gaming apps. Portal offers a larger display and more direct DualSense integration. See Backbone’s official site for the controller platform.
Steam Deck or Windows handheld
These devices install games locally and provide broader PC storefront access, but they generally cost more and require more software management. Steam Deck details are available at Valve’s official store.
Android cloud handheld
Devices such as Logitech G Cloud emphasize multiple cloud services and Android apps. Portal is the simpler choice for a PS5-centered setup and supports DualSense features that generic controllers may not reproduce.
Nintendo Switch-family hardware
Switch-family systems run native portable games without a PS5 connection. Portal is preferable only when access to your existing PS5 library and Remote Play is the priority.
What about Project Q 2, Portal Pro or a PS6 handheld?
The confirmed story ends with Project Q becoming Portal. The official sources here do not establish a successor called Project Q, Portal Pro or Portal 2, nor do they provide a release window or price for an OLED, 120 Hz, 5G or native PlayStation handheld. Treat those claims as speculation until Sony makes a primary announcement.
