Short answer: the original MSI Claw A1M is worth considering only at clearance pricing. The Claw 8 AI+ is a legitimate Windows alternative to the Steam Deck OLED, especially for PC Game Pass, non-Steam launchers and higher performance limits. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is faster again, but its reported price of about $1,799 makes it a premium enthusiast handheld rather than a value rival.
This comparison uses the Claw 8 AI+ as MSI’s mainstream challenger, then explains how the A1M and 8 EX AI+ change the recommendation.
First, which MSI Claw are we talking about?
| Model | Position | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Claw A1M | Original 2024 model | Intel Meteor Lake, 7-inch 1080p/120Hz LCD and 53Wh battery; launch software and value were weak. |
| Claw 8 AI+ | Main current comparison | 8-inch screen, Intel Core Ultra Series 2, 80Wh battery and Windows 11. |
| Claw 8 EX AI+ | Premium 2026 model | Intel Arc G3 Extreme platform, 8-inch 120Hz display, 80Wh battery and substantially higher pricing. |
| Steam Deck OLED | Valve’s current Deck | SteamOS, 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 50Wh battery and a 15W AMD APU. |
MSI’s original specifications list the A1M’s 53Wh battery and Core Ultra configurations (MSI specifications). The 8 AI+ is an 8-inch Windows handheld with an 80Wh battery (MSI product page). The newer 8 EX AI+ uses Intel’s Arc G3 platform and must not be treated as the same device (MSI product page).

How to compare fairly
The A1M has a more powerful theoretical platform than the Deck OLED, but early Intel drivers, game compatibility and power consumption reduced its practical advantage. The 8 AI+ is a more credible competitor and can produce higher frame rates when allowed higher power limits. The 8 EX AI+ sits above both in raw performance, but Windows overhead and its premium price remain part of the buying decision.
Do not call one device “twice as fast” without matching the exact processor, RAM, game and driver. A defensible test reports:
- 1280×800 or 1280×720 on both devices, plus each system’s native resolution;
- the same preset, textures, upscaling mode and frame-generation policy;
- approximately 15W on both systems for efficiency testing, then each device’s practical maximum mode;
- average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, fan noise and battery drain; and
- whether the Deck uses SteamOS or Windows.
Windows Central identifies the 8 AI+’s Intel Arc 140V graphics and 80Wh battery versus the Deck’s 8-CU RDNA 2 GPU (comparison). Frame generation can raise the displayed FPS while adding latency or artifacts, so native rendering and generated frames should be reported separately.
By game type
- Modern AAA: Claw 8 AI+ and especially EX AI+ have more performance headroom, but settings, resolution and TDP decide the actual experience.
- Indies and older games: either device is generally capable; the Deck’s simpler software often matters more than peak GPU speed.
- Emulation: both can work well, with the better choice depending on emulator setup, controls and desired systems.
Display quality: OLED image quality versus Claw size and refresh rate
The Steam Deck OLED is the image-quality winner. Its 7.4-inch HDR panel reaches up to 1,000 nits peak HDR brightness, exceeds 1,000,000:1 contrast and covers 110% of the P3 gamut (Valve specifications). OLED black levels, response time and HDR presentation are especially effective in dark-room and cinematic games.

The Claw A1M’s 1080p/120Hz LCD and the 8-inch Claw panels provide a larger physical image, more desktop workspace and greater refresh-rate headroom. However, rendering 1080p costs performance and power; 800p or 720p may be the better gaming choice. Choose the Deck for contrast and HDR, the 8 AI+ or EX AI+ for screen size, and the Claw for high-refresh competitive play when its GPU can sustain it.
Battery life: capacity is only half the story
| Device | Battery or estimate | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | 50Wh; Valve estimates 3–12 hours | Runtime varies with game, brightness, frame cap and power draw. |
| Steam Deck LCD | 40Wh; Valve estimates 2–8 hours | Included for context, but it is not the current OLED model. |
| Claw A1M | 53Wh | Capacity is only slightly above the Deck OLED. |
| Claw 8 AI+ / EX AI+ | 80Wh | Large advantage in energy capacity, offset by higher performance limits and an 8-inch display. |
Valve’s estimates are manufacturer ranges, not a common laboratory test (Deck technical data; Deck product page). The Claw 8 AI+ may last longer in a matched low-power scenario, while the Deck OLED can be more efficient in lighter or capped games. For demanding AAA play, neither should be described as an all-day battery without controlled testing. Sleep and standby drain also differ, with SteamOS generally offering the more predictable handheld sleep experience.
SteamOS versus Windows 11
Why SteamOS feels more like a console
- Fast suspend and resume, gamepad-first navigation and per-game performance controls.
- Shader-cache and Proton integration with clearer Deck Verified compatibility signals.
- Less desktop maintenance for a primarily Steam-based library.
Valve specifically presents suspend/resume and a console-like interface as Deck strengths (Steam Deck OLED page). Deck Verified is a useful signal, not a guarantee of perfect text scaling, performance or future patch support.
Why Windows makes the Claw more flexible
- Native Xbox PC Game Pass downloads and Microsoft Store games.
- Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Riot and other Windows launchers.
- Windows-only anti-cheat services and conventional desktop applications.
The trade-off is maintenance: Windows updates, notifications, drivers, background processes, scaling and launcher authentication can interrupt the handheld flow. MSI Center M and Windows layers may require troubleshooting, and suspend/resume is less consistently console-like. Windows compatibility is a flexibility advantage, not proof of a better handheld interface.

Game compatibility and anti-cheat
| Library or use case | Likely advantage |
|---|---|
| Steam-only library | Steam Deck |
| Xbox PC Game Pass downloads | Claw |
| Epic or Battle.net | Claw, although Deck workarounds exist |
| Competitive games with Windows anti-cheat | Usually Claw |
| Older Steam games | Either; Deck is often simpler |
| Mouse-oriented strategy and simulation games | Steam Deck, thanks to trackpads and Steam Input |
| Windows productivity software | Claw |
Proton lets the Deck run many Windows games, but kernel anti-cheat, DRM, launchers, codecs and controller support can still block or complicate individual titles. Windows removes many Linux compatibility barriers, but a Claw can still suffer from GPU drivers, scaling, anti-cheat conflicts, controller recognition, VRAM allocation or simply insufficient performance. Check the specific game’s current support rather than assuming either operating system guarantees success.

The Deck has trackpads, four rear grip buttons, gyro and mature Steam Input remapping (Valve controls specification). Those features matter for shooters, strategy games, simulations, cursor-heavy interfaces and emulation. Its broad community and established accessories also reduce setup friction.
Claw models use a more conventional Xbox-like layout and may include Hall-effect sticks or macro buttons depending on the exact SKU. Verify those features before buying. Judge either device by grip depth, weight distribution, trigger resistance, D-pad, stick height, rear-button placement, heat on the grips and fan noise—not weight alone.
Both connect through USB-C to displays and peripherals. Valve lists DisplayPort support up to 4K/120Hz or 8K/60Hz under cited conditions (Valve specifications). Windows makes the Claw the more natural replacement for a small desktop PC, while the Deck’s Linux desktop is workable but less convenient for Windows-only software.

Storage and upgradeability
The Deck OLED offers 512GB or 1TB NVMe configurations and a high-speed microSD slot (Valve specifications). MSI lists 1TB PCIe Gen 4 Claw 8 AI+ configurations (MSI store listing). Both support internal SSD replacement and microSD expansion, but the SSD form factor and opening procedure vary by model.
- Keep demanding modern games on the internal SSD where possible; use a reputable UHS-I microSD card for indies and older titles.
- Compare the cost of a larger SSD with the manufacturer’s higher-capacity tier.
- Plan for Windows recovery media or a reinstall after Claw storage work.
- Confirm the exact case and screen protector: A1M, 8 AI+ and EX AI+ accessories are not automatically interchangeable.
Price and value in the United States
Valve’s May 27, 2026 US pricing update lists the Steam Deck OLED at $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB (Valve pricing update). Older articles quoting $549 or $649 are outdated for this cited US update.
MSI pricing is SKU-, retailer-, promotion- and stock-dependent; consult the live MSI Claw store and record the exact configuration and price on the day you buy. At least one report places a Claw 8 EX AI+ configuration around $1,799, a retailer or publication price rather than a universal MSRP (TechRadar; Windows Central).
Include the total cost of a microSD card, dock, case, charger, possible Windows reinstall time and subscriptions. Near equal pricing favors the Deck for Steam users; a discounted 8 AI+ earns its premium through Windows and performance; the EX AI+ should be judged like a premium gaming PC.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you:
- Primarily buy games on Steam and want the least-friction experience.
- Value OLED contrast, HDR, suspend/resume, trackpads and extensive remapping.
- Play many indie, older or Steam Verified games.
- Do not need native PC Game Pass downloads or Windows-only launchers.
Choose the Claw 8 AI+ if you:
- Need Windows, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net or Windows-only anti-cheat.
- Want a larger screen and more performance headroom than the Deck’s 15W APU.
- Accept driver, launcher and Windows maintenance.
- Find the exact SKU at a meaningful discount.
Choose the Claw 8 EX AI+ only if you:
- Prioritize peak MSI handheld performance over value.
- Want newer Intel graphics, 32GB-class memory configurations and an 80Wh battery.
- Understand that generated frames are not equivalent to native-rendered performance.
- Are comfortable paying premium gaming-laptop money.
Choose neither if you:
- Expect desktop-class performance, all-day AAA battery life or uncompromised current-console exclusives.
- Do not want to troubleshoot Windows or Linux.
- Would use a laptop, desktop or console more comfortably at the same budget.
Final verdict
The MSI Claw is a worthy Steam Deck contender only when the model, price and Windows requirement line up. The A1M is a clearance buy, the 8 AI+ is the practical Windows alternative, and the 8 EX AI+ is a premium performance product. For most Steam-first players, the Steam Deck OLED remains the simpler and better-value choice; for Game Pass, Windows-only games or higher power limits, the Claw 8 AI+ is the one MSI handheld that makes a strong case.
