Xbox Game Bar’s Compact Mode is an established controller-friendly layout for Windows PCs, not a new 2026 feature. Microsoft previewed it for Xbox Insiders on August 13, 2024, and made it available to all PC players on Windows devices on September 25, 2024. It is designed for handhelds, small displays and controller use, while remaining available on conventional PCs.
What Compact Mode changes
Compact Mode is a layout and navigation setting inside Xbox Game Bar. It does not add a Windows edition, change game graphics settings or promise higher frame rates. Its purpose is to make Game Bar easier to use when screen space is limited or a controller is your primary input.
Microsoft describes the mode as a focused interface that generally presents one widget at a time instead of the more open, multi-widget desktop arrangement. A Home view provides access to running and recently played games, common launchers and installed widgets. You can also open the Widget Store, move between widgets with the controller’s LB and RB buttons, and reach widget actions through navigation or context menus.
- View running and recently played games.
- Open common launchers, including Xbox, Steam, Battle.net, EA Play, Riot Games and Ubisoft Connect, when they are installed.
- Open installed widgets or browse the Widget Store.
- Quit a running game directly from the Home widget.
- Use the Resource widget to inspect applications using device resources and close resource-heavy applications.
- Open widget settings or close a widget through its navigation context menu.
The Home view is an access point, not a replacement for every game library. Compact Mode does not replace Steam, the Xbox PC app, Epic Games or an OEM handheld launcher.

Microsoft has continued updating Game Bar after the initial release. Quick settings became available in both Compact and Desktop modes in May 2025, followed by further visual and controller-navigation improvements to social widgets in September 2025 (May 2025 Xbox update; September 2025 Xbox update).
How to turn on Compact Mode
- Press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the Settings widget.
- Select General.
- Turn on Compact Mode.
The toggle is in Game Bar, not the main Windows Settings application. Microsoft’s September 2024 announcement documents the same path (Microsoft’s availability announcement).

Using it with a controller or handheld
Compact Mode is optimized for controller navigation. Use LB and RB to switch between widgets, then use the controller’s directional controls and action buttons to select items. Widget-specific options and close commands may be inside the navigation context menu rather than permanently visible in the widget header.
On a Windows handheld, the universal shortcut remains Win + G. If the device has a dedicated button, map that button to Win + G in the manufacturer’s control software. ASUS, Lenovo and other vendors expose different remapping tools, and an Xbox button is not guaranteed to open Game Bar on every model.

Compact Mode versus Desktop Mode
| Aspect | Desktop Mode | Compact Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Primary audience | Traditional PC users and multitaskers | Handheld, small-screen and controller-first users |
| Widget layout | Multiple widgets can remain visible and arranged together | A more constrained, focused presentation, generally one widget at a time |
| Input | Mouse, keyboard and controller | Controller navigation is emphasized, while mouse and keyboard remain available |
| Widget controls | More actions are exposed directly in widget chrome | Some settings and close actions are reached through navigation or context menus |
| Best fit | Large monitors, streaming, chat and simultaneous monitoring | Portable play, living-room setups and quick game management |
Microsoft’s design guidance explains the underlying distinction between the customizable Desktop destination and Compact Mode’s constrained viewing area (Game Bar mode design guidance). Compact Mode can be less convenient if you routinely need several widgets visible at once or rely on precise mouse targeting.

Xbox app Compact Mode
The Xbox PC app has its own interface terminology. That app-level setting is separate from Game Bar and does not control the Game Bar overlay.
Xbox mode in Windows 11
Windows 11’s Xbox mode is a broader, full-screen controller-oriented Windows experience. Microsoft documents it separately, with a requirement of Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, supported-market availability and settings at Start → Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode. Depending on availability, it can also be entered through Game Bar settings, Task View or Win + F11 (Microsoft’s Windows gaming full-screen experience documentation). Xbox mode does not replace Game Bar Compact Mode.

Is it Windows 11-only?
Microsoft’s broad-release announcement described Compact Mode as available to PC players on Windows devices, rather than limiting it to a particular Windows 11 edition. Game Bar is distributed and updated as a Microsoft app, separately from major Windows feature releases. Because compatibility can depend on the installed Game Bar build, do not assume identical behavior on every Windows version without checking that device’s current app support.
If the Compact Mode toggle is missing
The general-release feature does not require Xbox Insider enrollment. A missing toggle usually points to an outdated, restricted or damaged Game Bar installation, or confusion with one of the other “compact” features.
- Open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart Windows.
- Press Win + G, open Settings → General, and check again.
- If Game Bar still misbehaves, use Windows’ available Repair or Reset option for the app.
- Reinstall Game Bar if repair and reset do not restore it.
Microsoft’s Game Bar installation guidance points users to Microsoft Store updates (Game Bar installation documentation), while its Store troubleshooting guidance covers updates, repair, reset and reinstall (Microsoft Store app troubleshooting). On an organization-managed PC, Store access or Game Bar may be restricted by policy. A staged app rollout or a build-specific issue can also delay the setting.
If Game Bar or a handheld button does nothing
- Test Win + G directly; this separates a Game Bar problem from a hardware-button mapping problem.
- Check Windows settings to confirm Game Bar has not been disabled by the device or administrator.
- Update or reinstall the Game Bar app through Microsoft Store.
- For a physical handheld button, configure the OEM control utility to send Win + G. Button behavior varies by firmware and vendor.
Who should use Compact Mode?
- Handheld owners: It makes Game Bar controls more usable on small screens and reduces dependence on a desktop-style mouse layout.
- Controller-first players: LB/RB widget switching and focused views provide a more console-like overlay.
- Small-display or TV users: The constrained presentation is easier to read and navigate from a distance.
- Large-monitor multitaskers: Desktop Mode may be better when you need chat, capture, performance and other widgets visible simultaneously.
Compact Mode is not documented as a performance switch. There is no established guarantee that it increases FPS, reduces input latency, extends battery life or lowers CPU/GPU usage. It is also not an alternative to an OEM control center for TDP, fan, brightness, volume or device-specific input controls.
When it launched and what is current
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| August 13, 2024 | Compact Mode entered the Xbox Insider PC Gaming Preview (Microsoft Insider announcement). |
| September 2024 | Game Bar’s SDK added APIs for widgets to detect Compact Mode and respond when its state changes (Game Bar SDK changelog). |
| September 25, 2024 | Microsoft announced availability for all PC players on Windows devices. |
| May 21, 2025 | Quick settings and visual updates reached Game Bar in both modes. |
| September 29, 2025 | Social widgets received further visual and controller-navigation improvements. |
Third-party widgets can use the SDK’s XboxGameBarWidget.CompactModeEnabled and XboxGameBarWidget.CompactModeEnabledChanged APIs, so their layouts and controls may not be identical to Microsoft’s built-in widgets. The feature is established on current supported installations, but the exact interface still depends on the Game Bar build and the widget.
