Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Elden Ring stutters on PC, changing CPU settings is not the first fix to try: shader compilation, ray tracing, the wrong GPU, damaged files, or background activity can cause similar symptoms. Update the game, check the likely causes in order, and only then test CPU affinity or hybrid-core settings. These steps cover the Windows PC version, not consoles or Steam Deck.
Start with the current game update
Update Elden Ring through Steam before changing Windows or BIOS settings. FromSoftware’s May 28, 2026 PC update lists fixes for brief or continuous freezes, unexpected crashes, and rendering problems. Its title-screen versions are App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1; check the official update notice for later version changes.
- Launch the game and check the version text in the lower-right corner of the title screen.
- Restart Steam and the game after an update.
- If problems remain, in Steam open Library → right-click ELDEN RING → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. This is useful after an interrupted update, crash, or mod removal; see the official file-verification notice.
Identify what kind of performance problem you have
A high average FPS does not rule out stutter. Look at a frame-time graph if available: a stable 60 FPS target can still feel uneven when frame times spike.
- Stutter: brief hitches or frame-time spikes while the game is otherwise running at a reasonable speed.
- Consistently low FPS: the game runs slowly all the time. Check graphics load, CPU limits, temperatures, clocks, and hardware capability rather than assuming a scheduling problem.
- Area-entry or first-use hitch: shader compilation is one possible cause, particularly if revisiting the same content reduces the pauses.
- Multi-second freezes: check for updates and file problems, then investigate drivers, overlays, storage activity, and system stability.
- Network lag: delayed multiplayer actions without matching frame-time spikes point away from CPU performance.
Try the safe, supported fixes first
Turn ray tracing off as a diagnostic
Open Title screen or in-game menu → System → Graphics Settings → Raytracing Quality, set it to Off, and restart the game. Official patch information has warned that ray tracing can become unintentionally enabled and cause unstable PC performance; see the patch notes and FromSoftware’s ray-tracing notice. If switching it off removes the hitching, the issue is more likely tied to rendering load than CPU scheduling. You can turn it back on later to compare.

Compile shaders using the game’s setting
- Open System → Graphics.
- Set Compile Shader to ON.
- Return to the title screen and let compilation finish, then restart the game and retry the same area.
Square Enix’s stutter guidance estimates that this can take about 35–90 minutes depending on the PC. It also says the GPU shader cache must be enabled for the cache file to be generated correctly. This procedure may address shader-related pauses, but not every DirectX 12 frame-time spike, driver issue, or engine stall. Game patches, driver updates, or cache deletion can make stutter return. Avoid repeatedly clearing the cache: that removes compiled data and can force another rebuild.
Choose the discrete GPU on multi-GPU systems
On Windows 11 systems with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is assigned to the intended GPU. In Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add the game executable if needed, select it, choose Options → High performance, save, and restart. Microsoft documents this setting for systems with more than one GPU in its Windows 11 graphics guidance. It selects a preferred graphics processor; it is not a CPU-performance boost.
Reduce competing load and compare display modes
- Plug in a laptop while playing.
- Close CPU-heavy background applications, including browsers playing video, recording software, RGB utilities, monitoring tools, launchers, and unnecessary overlays.
- Use Task Manager during a hitch to see whether another process is consuming CPU, whether disk activity spikes, or whether the game is placed in Efficiency Mode.
- Use a normal Balanced or High performance power plan that suits your system; neither guarantees better frame pacing on every PC.
- If the problem seems tied to how the game is presented, test borderless windowed and fullscreen separately.
Change one setting at a time and replay the same area. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped and to reverse it.

Check whether the CPU is actually the bottleneck
Monitor a frame-time graph alongside GPU utilization, per-core CPU use, CPU and GPU clocks, temperatures, RAM and VRAM use, and disk activity. Watch what changes at the moment of a hitch, not just the average across a long session.

- High GPU use with high temperatures or falling clocks: investigate graphics load or thermal throttling before changing CPU scheduling.
- One or two CPU threads saturated while GPU use is low: a CPU or game-thread limit is plausible, though this alone does not prove that affinity is the answer.
- CPU and GPU use both low during a freeze: consider shader compilation, asset streaming, storage, driver behavior, or an engine stall.
- Stutter begins after a game or driver update: check for changed settings, including ray tracing, and allow shader data to rebuild.
Low utilization during a pause does not mean the CPU simply needs to be made faster. It can indicate that the game is waiting on something else.
Test CPU affinity only if simpler checks do not help
CPU affinity limits which logical processors a process may use. It changes scheduling eligibility; it does not increase clock speed, core performance, or the game engine’s throughput. Some players report smoother play after removing CPU 0 or restricting the game to selected cores, but these are hardware-dependent community reports, not a universal developer-confirmed fix. Make a temporary Task Manager comparison
- Start the game normally through Steam and reach gameplay.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Details, and find the active Elden Ring process. Depending on the launch state, the process may be
eldenring.exeor the protected launcher process. - Right-click the process and choose Set affinity. Record the original selection before changing it.
- Test just one change: deselect the first logical processor, often labelled CPU 0, or, on a hybrid CPU, select performance cores only if your tool can identify them reliably.
- Play the same area for several minutes and compare frame pacing. If it is no better or is worse, restore the original selection.
Task Manager may not allow changes to a protected process, and a process can relaunch under a different name. Do not rename or replace executables to force the setting. CPU numbers identify logical processors, not necessarily physical cores; on Intel hybrid CPUs, CPU 0 does not automatically mean an E-core. Removing processors can reduce performance, and a rule that helps one CPU model may hurt another.
Handle hybrid CPUs and E-cores cautiously
On an Intel hybrid CPU, first test with Windows’ normal scheduler and no affinity override. If monitoring or repeatable comparisons point to scheduling as the cause, a temporary P-core-only test may be worthwhile, provided the cores are clearly identifiable. Limit the change to the game process.

Disabling E-cores in BIOS affects the whole system, reduces available CPU resources, and is not a first-line fix. Treat it as a last-resort experiment only when you have a repeatable reason to suspect hybrid-core scheduling; restore the original BIOS setting if the test does not measurably improve frame pacing. A report about E-cores helping a modded setup is an edge case, not proof that the standard game benefits: see the community report.

Should you set the game to High priority?
Usually, no. Setting a process to High changes how Windows schedules it, but it is not a proven way to improve Elden Ring frame pacing and cannot fix shader compilation, GPU saturation, thermal throttling, or engine stalls. Process Lasso’s FAQ warns that priority and affinity changes are not guaranteed to improve performance and that excessive manual scheduling can be counterproductive.
If you have a specific, repeatable reason to test it, use Task Manager → Details → right-click the game process → Set priority → High, compare the same scene, and restore Normal if there is no benefit or the desktop becomes less responsive. Do not use Realtime priority.
Keep anti-cheat and online play in mind
Some community workarounds replace start_protected_game.exe with eldenring.exe or bypass the protected launcher. Such methods can disable Easy Anti-Cheat and force offline play, removing online multiplayer features such as messages, invasions, and co-op. They can also create compatibility problems after updates and make results unrepresentative of the normal launch configuration. Do not use a launcher bypass as a routine performance fix. If the game works only offline after a change, that is not a complete fix for someone who wants online play. Restore the original files and verify the Steam installation before testing again. If a protected process prevents an affinity change, leave it alone rather than trying to defeat the protection. Process Lasso’s documentation discusses affinity handling, but does not guarantee compatibility or a performance gain.
Separate modded-game problems from the base game
If you use Seamless Co-op, Convergence or another overhaul, an FPS unlocker, widescreen or frame-time tool, DLL injector, ReShade, or a custom launcher, first compare against an unmodified installation. Modded reports do not automatically describe the standard game. After removing modifications, verify the game files and test the online-capable Steam launch before drawing conclusions.
Choose the next step from the symptom

Use persistent tuning tools only after a successful test
Windows Task Manager is sufficient for a temporary, manual affinity or priority comparison when the process allows it. Process Lasso can automate persistent per-process rules, but it is optional, not required; the developer cautions that results are uncertain and warns against over-tuning in its FAQ. Consider a persistent rule only after the same temporary change produces a repeatable improvement, and remove it if a game update or launch problem changes the result.
