The Gigabyte AORUS FI27Q-X is still a capable 27-inch, 1440p monitor for competitive PC gaming: its 240Hz refresh rate, quick motion response and low input lag are its strongest reasons to buy. But weak contrast, limited HDR, a BGR subpixel layout and no USB-C make it a conditional purchase today. Consider it when the price is clearly below newer 240Hz displays and you can test or return it; otherwise, newer IPS models or OLED may make more sense.
What the FI27Q-X is—and who it suits
The FI27Q-X is part of Gigabyte’s AORUS gaming range and a faster successor to the original FI27Q. Its defining change is a move from 165Hz to 240Hz, paired with the same broad idea: 27-inch QHD resolution for high-frame-rate PC gaming. RTINGS’ comparison of the FI27Q and FI27Q-X also notes the newer model’s BGR rather than RGB subpixel arrangement.
That combination remains useful for competitive games if your PC can deliver high frame rates at 2560×1440. It is less compelling for slower single-player games, where stronger contrast and HDR can matter more than the jump from 165Hz to 240Hz. The monitor does not generate extra frames: the GPU, game and settings determine how often a new frame is ready to display.

Gigabyte identifies the panel as SuperSpeed IPS, specifies 240Hz and lists DisplayHDR 400 on its official product page. The manual supplies the brightness figures above. Treat advertised response times as manufacturer claims: actual transitions vary with refresh rate and overdrive, and an aggressive overdrive setting can add inverse ghosting.

Gaming performance: its best reason to buy
240Hz at QHD
At 27 inches, QHD offers more desktop space and sharper detail than 1080p without the GPU load of 4K. At 240Hz, animation and motion can look smoother than at 144Hz or 165Hz, especially in fast competitive games. The advantage is most useful when frame rates are high and consistent; if your system rarely approaches 240 frames per second, you will not get the full benefit of the refresh ceiling.
Motion response and overdrive
RTINGS describes the FI27Q-X’s response times as very fast and its motion handling as a strength. Still, the advertised 0.3ms MPRT or 1ms-class GTG figure should not be read as the time every pixel takes to change in ordinary use. Response depends on the transition, refresh rate and overdrive mode. Too much overdrive can create bright trails or halos behind moving objects; settings that look acceptable at 240Hz may perform differently at lower refresh rates. Test more than one setting rather than selecting the most aggressive option by default. Reviewers have differed on the best balance, as reflected in this discussion of overdrive results.
Input lag and variable refresh rate
RTINGS reports very low input lag and support for FreeSync, and describes the monitor as G-SYNC compatible. That supports a strong PC-gaming case, but it does not remove latency elsewhere: game processing, GPU frame delivery, mouse and network all contribute to the experience. Compatibility and behavior can depend on the graphics card, driver, connection and game; verify VRR with your own setup rather than assuming every combination behaves identically.

For a PC setup, connect over DisplayPort unless the manual confirms that the HDMI input supports your desired resolution and refresh mode. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and select 2560×1440 at 240Hz. Enable Adaptive-Sync or FreeSync in the monitor’s on-screen display, then enable the corresponding VRR option in the GPU control panel. If using VRR, a frame cap just below the refresh ceiling can help keep a game within the variable-refresh range; the ideal cap depends on the game and GPU configuration.

Image quality: good viewing angles, ordinary IPS blacks
Contrast and dark-room viewing
The main picture-quality compromise is contrast. IPS panels typically offer broad viewing angles and more consistent colors across the screen than many VA panels, but their blacks are usually less deep. RTINGS flags the FI27Q-X’s low contrast and poor dark-room performance: black areas can look gray, and a dark game or film loses depth. IPS glow and backlight bleed also vary between individual units, so one sample does not establish how another will look.
Color and everyday SDR
The FI27Q-X supports a wide color gamut, and Gigabyte and TFTCentral’s product coverage discuss its coverage claims. Wide gamut is not the same as accurate color. Results depend on factory calibration, the selected picture mode, gamut handling and color management in the application. Unmanaged standard-dynamic-range content can look oversaturated on a wide-gamut display unless an sRGB mode or color-managed workflow is used. For color-critical photo or video work, look for measured white balance, gamma, color error and gamut behavior for the specific unit—not just a coverage percentage.

HDR is a feature, not a selling point
DisplayHDR 400 and HDR10 support do not make this a high-contrast HDR display. RTINGS reports no local dimming and only moderate HDR brightness. Without local dimming, the screen cannot make highlights much brighter while independently preserving dark areas, so HDR content may gain brightness or color without the striking highlight-to-black contrast associated with OLED or well-equipped mini-LED displays. Keep HDR secondary in the buying decision; for normal SDR desktop use, turn it off if the desktop looks washed out.
BGR text rendering: check before committing
Most PC displays arrange their red, green and blue subpixels RGB. The FI27Q-X uses BGR. Some text-rendering systems assume RGB order, so small text can look slightly fuzzy or show colored fringes in particular applications, fonts or scaling settings. RTINGS notes that this can affect text clarity in some programs and recommends adjusting Windows ClearType; it does not suggest that every user will notice the same problem. Games and moving images are generally less affected than a day of reading, coding or working in spreadsheets.
To check a unit before the return window closes:
- Set the display to its native 2560×1440 resolution and inspect black text on a white background from your normal seating distance.
- Check the applications you use most: browser, office suite, code editor, game launcher and Windows menus.
- Search Windows for Adjust ClearType text, enable ClearType and complete its calibration wizard.
- Restart the affected applications, then compare at 100% scaling and your usual scaling setting.
- If possible, compare the same text on an RGB monitor. Return the FI27Q-X if fringing remains distracting and the seller’s return terms allow it.
ClearType is a mitigation, not a guaranteed fix for a layout that does not suit your eyes or applications.

Stand, controls and connectivity
The stand’s height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustment makes the monitor easier to position than a basic tilt-only stand; RTINGS also describes its ergonomics favorably. The pivot can be useful for portrait work, though BGR text remains a consideration in that use. The OSD provides gaming-oriented tools including Black Equalizer and Aim Stabilizer, while RGB Fusion lighting is a preference feature rather than a performance advantage.
The FI27Q-X has no USB-C video input or laptop charging, and it lacks the KVM-oriented convenience of the Gigabyte M27Q X. Consult the manual for its exact ports and supported input modes; do not assume every connection reaches 240Hz or supports the same color-depth and HDR combinations. Gigabyte’s M27Q X product page describes that model’s different feature set, and revisions matter when comparing connectivity.

Office and creative work
QHD resolution, wide viewing angles, a flexible stand and smooth scrolling make the FI27Q-X usable for mixed work and play. Its BGR layout can be a deal-breaker for text-heavy work, however, and low contrast is less pleasant for dark interfaces in dim rooms. Wide gamut can also oversaturate unmanaged SDR content. It makes the most sense for creators who also place a high priority on gaming speed and have confirmed that text rendering and color behavior suit their workflow—not as a dedicated professional HDR display.

Console gaming
The 240Hz headline is principally a PC-gaming advantage; consoles do not use the full refresh ceiling. Console resolution, 120Hz output, VRR range and HDR behavior depend on the console and the monitor’s HDMI mode. Confirm those combinations in the manual and with the particular console before buying. If your main use is console gaming, do not pay extra for 240Hz without verifying that the features you will actually use work over HDMI.
How it compares with newer options
| Monitor | Why consider it | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gigabyte AORUS FI27Q-X | QHD, 240Hz IPS, fast motion and an adjustable AORUS stand | Best considered when discounted and returnable; weak contrast, limited HDR, BGR text risk and no USB-C |
| Gigabyte M27Q X | Similar QHD/240Hz target with KVM and more productivity-oriented connectivity | Check the exact revision and ports; the FI27Q-X has the more adjustable AORUS stand. See the RTINGS comparison. |
| LG UltraGear 27GR83Q-B | Another 27-inch QHD/240Hz option; LG’s U.S. listing showed $279.99, reduced from $499.99, when checked for this comparison | That U.S. sale price is time-sensitive and must be rechecked. Verify its ports, stand and subpixel layout rather than assuming feature parity. See LG’s U.S. monitor catalog. |
| ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQMR | QHD Fast IPS with up to 300Hz and DisplayHDR 600; ASUS’s U.S. store showed $449 | The quoted U.S. price is a time-sensitive listing, not a permanent price. 300Hz helps only if your system can deliver very high frame rates; HDR 600 is not automatically OLED-like. | 27-inch QHD OLED | Much deeper blacks, stronger perceived HDR contrast and very fast pixel response; LG’s catalog includes 240Hz OLED models | Usually costs more and raises burn-in or image-retention, warranty and static-desktop-use considerations. Surface finish and text rendering also vary by model; see LG’s catalog. |
The M27Q X comparison source is labeled M27Q revision 1.0, so do not treat it as a direct specification sheet for every M27Q X revision. Current prices and stock vary by seller and region. The FI27Q-X’s official page remains available, but a current official U.S. price or guaranteed new-stock availability is not established; check the seller, condition, warranty and return terms at purchase.
Buying a new, clearance or used FI27Q-X
There is no sensible fixed price threshold independent of the alternatives available where you live. Compare the final price, condition and return protection against current 240Hz IPS models, faster IPS options and entry-level OLED. A clear discount can justify the FI27Q-X for a competitive PC player; at prices near newer monitors, its older feature set and known compromises erode the case.
- Buy when: competitive PC gaming is the priority, your system can drive high QHD frame rates, the price is meaningfully lower than newer choices, and you can test text clarity.
- Pass when: HDR, deep blacks, text-heavy work, USB-C, laptop charging or KVM are priorities—or when the price nears newer 240Hz/300Hz IPS or OLED alternatives.
- For a used unit: ask about purchase date, panel history, dead or stuck pixels, original accessories and remaining warranty. Check whether the seller or retailer allows returns.
- On arrival: inspect uniform black and gray screens in a dim room for glow, bleed or unevenness; test for pixel defects; verify native resolution, refresh rate, VRR and the input connection you plan to use.
Panel uniformity varies, so inspect the actual unit rather than relying on another owner’s sample. A used monitor without a practical return option is a poor way to take a chance on text clarity, pixels or panel condition.

Verdict by use
- Competitive PC gaming: a strong candidate if discounted, because 240Hz QHD motion performance remains the central appeal.
- General gaming: consider it against newer options; the IPS contrast and limited HDR are more noticeable in atmospheric, dark-room games.
- Office work: buy only after checking BGR text rendering in your own applications.
- Content creation: potentially useful for wide-gamut work alongside gaming, but verify calibration and color management; it is not a premium HDR reference display.
- HDR films and games: choose an OLED or suitable mini-LED model if deep blacks and impactful highlights are the goal.
- Console gaming: verify HDMI refresh-rate and VRR support for your console; the full 240Hz value is aimed at PC use.
