The SteelSeries Rival 710 is still a capable wired gaming mouse, but it is a niche buy in 2026. Its large, palm-friendly shape, solid construction, OLED screen, programmable vibration alerts and replaceable parts set it apart. Its substantial weight and stiff cable make it a poor match for players seeking lightweight, wireless or fast-swipe performance. Consider it only if those distinctive features appeal to you and the price is well below newer alternatives.

The CPI and IPS figures describe advertised sensor limits, not a ranking of overall mouse quality. Shape, weight, lift-off behavior, click response and cable movement have more practical impact for most players. Best Buy lists the sensor specifications in its Rival 710 product listing.
Design, weight and comfort
The Rival 710 is a large, right-handed mouse with a broad rear and a substantial, rigid feel. Its separate primary buttons, textured side areas and prominent thumb controls create a familiar ergonomic layout. The construction feels solid, but solidity is not the same thing as a modern, lightweight design: the mouse’s heft is one of the first things to consider before buying.
Who is likely to find the shape comfortable?
Its size and contour are best suited to medium-to-large hands, particularly with a palm grip. A relaxed claw grip may also work, depending on hand size and button reach. Small-handed users may find the body too large, while fingertip users may dislike the high mass and rear-weighted balance. The three side buttons are useful for a few commands, but check that you can reach them without shifting your grip.

RTINGS describes the Rival 710 as well-built and comfortable for long sessions, especially for palm grip, while also identifying its weight as a drawback for ultra-light gaming (RTINGS review). Comfort remains personal: hand size, grip, sensitivity and desk space all matter.
What the weight means in play
A heavy mouse can feel planted and deliberate, which some low-sensitivity players and desktop users prefer. The trade-off is more effort for repeated rapid swipes, a greater chance of fatigue for some users over long sessions, and less convenient transport. Unlike mice with removable ballast, the Rival 710 does not give you a weight system to tune its feel. If low mass is a priority, this is the wrong design.
Tracking and gaming performance
The TrueMove3 optical sensor tracks consistently for ordinary gaming and desktop use, and the advertised 12,000 CPI ceiling is ample for most players. Maximum CPI alone does not make it better than newer mice; many people use a much lower setting. RTINGS found its overall sensor performance excellent, but its comparison with the Logitech G502 HERO favored the Logitech for CPI accuracy and lift-off distance (RTINGS comparison).

RTINGS also characterized the Rival 710 as a decent FPS mouse with low click latency in its testing. That does not erase the two physical factors most likely to affect fast play: its weight and its stiff braided cable. A cable that catches or pulls can interfere with a low-sensitivity swipe even when the sensor itself is tracking well. A mouse bungee, a raised cable route or extra slack near the mouse can reduce that drag.

How it fits different games
- Competitive FPS: Usable if you prefer a larger, heavier palm-grip mouse, but not a natural pick for rapid flicks or ultra-light setups. Cable drag and weight are the compromises.
- MMOs: The three side buttons, macros and profiles can cover a modest set of commands. They do not replace a dedicated MMO mouse with a larger thumb-button grid.
- General desktop use: The shape and programmable controls can be comfortable, but the cable and weight are unnecessary drawbacks for many office setups.
- Travel: Its size, weight and wired-only connection make it inconvenient, despite the removable cable.
OLED display and tactile alerts
The small monochrome OLED can show a custom image or text, configuration information and supported GameSense status. It is most useful as a profile or status indicator, or simply as a way to personalize the mouse. It does not improve aim, and its small size means most players will rarely look at it during a match. SteelSeries’ original product guide describes configuration through its software; the feature’s usefulness depends on setup and compatible integrations.
An internal haptic motor can deliver programmable tactile alerts, such as a notification tied to an event or timer where the software and game support it. That physical cue may suit players who value immersion or prefer not to look away from the screen. It can also be distracting or feel unwanted during precise play. Treat vibration as an optional extra, not a reason to expect better gaming performance; the original guide documents software customization, but does not establish that every integration remains available today.

Buttons, cable and modular parts
The Rival 710 provides three side buttons, a scroll-wheel click and programmable primary controls. Its reinforced split-trigger main buttons are listed with a 60-million-click rating by Best Buy; that figure is a component rating, not a promise about how long any individual mouse will last. Three side buttons are enough for push-to-talk, browser navigation, reload or a few MMO actions, but the lack of scroll-wheel tilt and a larger thumb grid limits its flexibility for users who want many commands.
The braided cable is removable, and SteelSeries’ guide lists a 2-meter standard cable plus a shorter 1-meter notebook cable. Removability helps with transport and makes cable replacement possible if a compatible replacement can be found; it does not guarantee parts will remain available. RTINGS found the cable stiff enough to create drag, so braided should not be mistaken for flexible.
The sensor assembly and rear plate are also removable. This is useful modularity, but it is not an open-ended upgrade platform: it does not make the mouse wireless or ensure that modern replacement modules will be sold. The OLED, haptics and modular construction are distinctive, yet none compensates for a poor fit or a price close to newer options.

Software and compatibility caveats
The original SteelSeries guide lists Windows 7 or newer and Mac OS X 10.8 or newer, along with 120 MB of free disk space. Those historical requirements explain the product’s original compatibility, not whether every feature works in current SteelSeries GG or on current operating systems. The available documentation does not establish present-day support for OLED customization, haptics, GameSense integrations, onboard profile storage, full macOS features or Linux. If any of those capabilities are essential, confirm them with SteelSeries or the seller before purchasing rather than relying on the original minimum requirements.
Rival 710 alternatives
| Alternative | Why consider it | What the Rival 710 retains |
|---|---|---|
| Logitech G502 HERO | RTINGS judged it slightly better overall, citing adjustable weights, a better cable, more accurate CPI behavior, lower lift-off distance and additional controls. | The Rival 710 may feel more comfortable over long periods and offers an OLED display, tactile alerts and a removable sensor module. See the comparison. |
| SteelSeries Rival 600 | RTINGS describes it as better overall, with adjustable weights, a more comfortable ergonomic slant, lower click latency and lower lift-off distance. | The Rival 710 has the OLED and haptics, as well as a higher advertised CPI ceiling—though most users are unlikely to need the maximum. See RTINGS’ assessment. |
| SteelSeries Sensei Ten | Consider it for a lighter wired shape that is better suited to claw grip, according to RTINGS. | The Rival 710 may be more comfortable for some users and is described as better-built; the Sensei Ten has one more programmable side button. See RTINGS’ assessment. |
| Modern wireless gaming mouse | Better aligned with buyers seeking freedom from cable drag, portability and current wireless designs. | The Rival 710’s specific OLED-and-haptics combination has few direct equivalents; choose based on priorities rather than expecting a feature-for-feature match. |
Should you buy the SteelSeries Rival 710?
Buy it if you want a large, right-handed, heavy wired mouse, prefer palm grip, need only a few side buttons, and genuinely value the OLED, vibration alerts or replaceable parts. Its price must also be meaningfully below newer premium mice, since the current price and availability are not established by the available retailer listing (Best Buy listing).
Skip it if you prioritize wireless convenience, low weight, small-hand ergonomics, a full MMO button grid, scroll-wheel tilt, Linux support or minimal reliance on gaming software. For a used or old-stock unit, inspect the main clicks, scroll wheel, cable, side grips, OLED and sensor module, and confirm that the seller offers a return option. Those are practical checks, not evidence that every unit has a defect.

Launch-era reviews should not be mistaken for a current-value verdict: TechRadar listed an original launch price of about $99 / £99 / AU$149 and praised the modular approach while finding the OLED and haptics more gimmicky than essential (TechRadar review). Those are historical prices, not current quotes. At a substantial discount the Rival 710 can make sense for its unusual feature mix; near the price of newer premium mice, the weight, cable and age make it difficult to recommend.
