Its 144Hz IPS panel, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, USB-C video, and built-in KVM still make it unusually versatile for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and work-from-home setups. Its weak HDR, 1,000:1 contrast, limited USB-C charging, and DSC-dependent 4K/144Hz inputs are dated beside newer Mini-LED and OLED displays. Buy it when it is clearly cheaper than those newer options; skip it at a near-premium price.

What makes the M32U still appealing
The M32U combines features that are often split across several monitors. You get a large, sharp 4K desktop, high refresh rate for PC games, HDMI 2.1 inputs for current consoles, USB-C video, and KVM switching for a desktop-and-laptop desk. Its IPS panel also offers wider viewing angles and generally more consistent color than a comparable VA screen.
That combination is most compelling for mixed use. It is less compelling if your priority is cinematic HDR, OLED-level motion clarity, or charging a powerful laptop through one cable.

Is 4K at 144Hz realistic?
The panel can accept it; your GPU must render it
The monitor supports 3840×2160 at up to 144Hz for PC use. Esports titles can often reach high frame rates, but demanding modern games usually require a high-end graphics card, reduced settings, or upscaling such as DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or in-game resolution scaling. The monitor cannot make a midrange GPU produce 144 frames per second.
Bandwidth and DSC
DisplayPort 1.4 uses Display Stream Compression (DSC) for 4K/144Hz. Gigabyte lists HDMI operation at 4K/144Hz with DSC-enabled 4:4:4 or at 4K/144Hz 4:2:0. Therefore, “HDMI 2.1” here does not mean every 4K/144Hz signal is carried uncompressed. It does provide the practical bandwidth needed for 4K/120Hz consoles and high-refresh PC input.
What consoles actually use
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S generally target 4K/120Hz, not 144Hz. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and select 4K/120Hz in the console’s video settings. The M32U’s console ceiling is 120Hz even though a PC can run at 144Hz.
Gaming performance
Latency, VRR, and refresh rates
Independent testing by RTINGS finds very low input lag, support for FreeSync and variable refresh rate, and strong console performance. VRR is useful when frame rates move below 144fps because it synchronizes the panel to the game instead of forcing a fixed refresh cadence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Response behavior changes with refresh rate and overdrive setting. The most aggressive overdrive mode can create inverse ghosting, so a middle setting is usually the safer choice when moving between 144Hz PC play, 120Hz console play, and 60Hz games. Check the image at the refresh rate you actually use rather than assuming the fastest mode is best.

Motion clarity and strobing
Gigabyte’s “1ms MPRT” is a motion-strobing claim, not a guarantee that ordinary pixel transitions measure 1ms. The M32U includes Aim Stabilizer Sync, but strobing reduces brightness and limits flexibility compared with normal adaptive-sync operation. Newer 240Hz OLED monitors deliver clearer motion in competitive games; the M32U is better suited to single-player, racing, strategy, and mixed gaming unless you specifically need extreme refresh rates.
Fixed-refresh gaming
At a stable frame rate, fixed refresh can avoid the brightness fluctuations some users notice with VRR. Conversely, games with unstable frame rates are generally smoother with VRR enabled. Reports of VRR flicker, wake problems, or KVM behavior differ by firmware, cable, and system; anecdotal user discussions should not be treated as a universal defect rate.
Image quality in everyday use
Sharp 4K IPS image
At 31.5 inches, 4K provides a dense desktop that keeps text, game interfaces, photos, and video detailed. Windows scaling at 125% is a comfortable starting point for many desks; 100% maximizes workspace but makes interface text smaller, while 150% favors readability. macOS may use a scaled mode rather than a native 4K desktop, so preview your preferred scaling before buying.

Gigabyte rates the panel at 90% DCI-P3 and 123% sRGB, with 350 cd/m² typical brightness. That is suitable for a bright room and general creative work, although wide-gamut color can look oversaturated in applications that do not manage color. A calibration device is worthwhile for color-critical work; factory accuracy is not a substitute for a calibrated workflow.
The non-glare coating controls reflections but does not eliminate them. IPS viewing angles are a strength, while IPS glow, backlight bleed, and uneven corners vary between units. Buy from a retailer with a practical pixel and return policy because panel uniformity is partly a sample-to-sample lottery.

Why 32 inches instead of 27 or 28?
The larger screen gives games a more immersive field of view and provides more room for side-by-side windows. A 27- or 28-inch 4K monitor is sharper per inch and easier to fit on a shallow desk, but text and interface elements appear smaller at the same scaling.
HDR is the M32U’s biggest weakness
DisplayHDR 400 certification confirms basic HDR compatibility, not high-impact HDR. The M32U’s 350 cd/m² typical brightness and 1,000:1 contrast ratio, combined with the lack of meaningful local dimming, cannot produce the bright highlights and deep blacks of a Mini-LED display or OLED panel.

Dark HDR scenes can look gray or washed out, especially in a dim room. HDR may add some color-volume and highlight information, but it should not be the reason you buy this monitor. If HDR is central to your games or movies, spend more on a modern Mini-LED or OLED model and weigh OLED burn-in management and text-rendering differences.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S compatibility
Both consoles can use the M32U’s HDMI 2.1 inputs for 4K/120Hz-class gaming, and RTINGS rates the monitor highly for console use. You will not use the full 144Hz ceiling on a console. HDR impact remains limited by the panel’s brightness and contrast, and current-firmware VRR behavior should be checked with your specific console settings.
There is no TV tuner, streaming platform, or remote-control ecosystem. Treat it as a monitor rather than a television replacement.

Ports, USB-C, and KVM setup
The connectivity package is the M32U’s strongest differentiator: two HDMI 2.1 inputs, one DisplayPort 1.4 input with DSC, USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, three USB-A downstream ports listed in the product information, a headphone jack, and built-in speakers. OSD Sidekick and KVM functions require the appropriate USB connection to the computer, as described in Gigabyte’s documentation.
Desktop-plus-laptop KVM wiring
- Connect the gaming desktop by DisplayPort or HDMI.
- Connect the laptop to USB-C if its port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. A USB-C cable without video support cannot carry the display signal.
- If the desktop uses HDMI or DisplayPort, connect the monitor’s USB upstream cable to the desktop so its USB hub and KVM can communicate.
- Plug the keyboard and mouse into the monitor’s USB-A ports.
- In the monitor’s KVM settings, assign each video input to its corresponding USB source.
- Switch the display input, or use the monitor’s KVM control, to move the keyboard and mouse between systems.
Switching may not be instantaneous. A sleeping laptop can fail to wake or renegotiate video until you reselect its input or reconnect the cable. These behaviors can vary with firmware and operating system.
USB-C charging limitation
The listed USB-C power delivery is approximately 18W: Gigabyte product information sheet. That is useful for light devices but insufficient to replace the charger for most performance laptops, particularly while gaming. The M32U is a USB-C display and peripheral switch, not a 65–100W docking station.
Productivity, design, and audio
The 32-inch 4K workspace suits coding, spreadsheets, editing timelines, and office applications. KVM is genuinely useful when one keyboard and mouse serve a desktop and laptop, but the low USB-C wattage means you still need separate power or a dock.
Design is conservative black rather than premium-looking. Tom’s Guide describes an understated, somewhat downscale exterior while noting the extensive port selection: Tom’s Guide review. The stand’s adjustment range, VESA details, and cable-routing provisions should be checked in the manual for your regional model. The built-in 3W × 2 speakers are convenient for alerts and casual video, but dedicated speakers or headphones provide better volume and quality.
Who should buy the M32U?
- Buy it when you want a large 4K desktop and gaming screen with IPS viewing angles.
- Buy it when you need two HDMI 2.1 inputs for a PS5, Xbox, and PC.
- Buy it when desktop-to-laptop KVM switching matters.
- Buy it when it is substantially cheaper than current Mini-LED and OLED competitors.
- Prefer another monitor if HDR, OLED blacks, 240Hz-plus competitive play, or one-cable 65–100W laptop charging is your priority.
- Reconsider if you are paying close to the original launch-era premium rather than a current discount.
Alternatives to consider
| Your priority | Alternative direction | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller or cheaper 4K high refresh | Gigabyte M27U or Gigabyte M28U | Less screen area and immersion |
| More contrast with a curved panel | Gigabyte M32UC | VA dark-level smearing and narrower viewing-angle behavior can be drawbacks |
| Best HDR and blacks | Modern 32-inch Mini-LED or OLED | Higher prices; OLED requires burn-in management and may render text differently |
| Competitive gaming | 240Hz-or-faster 1440p or 4K display | Often less desktop space or substantially higher cost |
| One-cable laptop workstation | Monitor with 65–100W USB-C power delivery | May cost more or omit dual HDMI 2.1 inputs |
