Best GPU for Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2026

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people playing Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p or 4K, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is the best overall pick: it pairs strong native rendering performance with 16GB of VRAM. Choose an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti instead if DLSS, CUDA, or Nvidia’s wider software ecosystem matters to you; step up to an RTX 5080 for a premium 4K system. The right buy still depends on your resolution, frame-rate target, and the prices available where you shop.

Quick GPU recommendations

Target Good starting point What to know
1080p, around 60 FPS RTX 4060-class, RX 7600-class, or newer A high-end card is usually unnecessary for a 1080p/60 display; use a sensible settings mix.
1080p, 120 FPS or higher RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB High-refresh play can become CPU-limited, so a faster GPU may not raise frame rates in every scene.
1440p, best value RX 9070 Its 16GB of VRAM and raster performance make it a strong fit; consider an RTX 5070 if DLSS or Nvidia software matters more.
1440p, high refresh RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti Compare current prices directly. The RX 9070 XT favors native rendering; the RTX 5070 Ti adds Nvidia’s feature and software ecosystem.
4K, approximately 60 FPS RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti Expect to tune demanding settings rather than assume every Ultra option will hold a fixed frame rate.
4K, high refresh RTX 5080 It offers more premium-tier headroom, but is difficult to justify for RDR2 alone on value grounds.

These are buying tiers, not guaranteed frame-rate results. The available comparisons do not establish a single, directly comparable FPS figure for every card under the same CPU, driver, API, graphics settings, and benchmark scene. Tom’s Hardware includes RDR2 using Vulkan in its GPU test suite, but its hierarchy is an aggregate across games, not an RDR2-only ranking: Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy and test methodology.

Why the best GPU depends on your target

1080p: avoid paying for performance you cannot use

For 1080p at about 60 FPS, an RTX 4060-class or RX 7600-class card is a reasonable starting point, assuming the rest of the PC is suitable. For 120 FPS or higher, consider an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT 16GB, but first check whether your CPU can keep up. At low resolutions, the processor may cap performance before a powerful GPU is fully utilized.

1440p: the practical sweet spot

The RX 9070 is a balanced choice for standard 1440p, while the RX 9070 XT and RTX 5070 Ti make more sense for high refresh rates or extra headroom. At 3440×1440 ultrawide, the GPU has more pixels to render than at standard 2560×1440, so a high-refresh or Ultra-settings target may warrant moving up a tier.

4K: prioritize headroom, then tune

The RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti is a sensible tier for approximately 60-FPS-class 4K play, with settings adjusted to suit the scene and desired smoothness. The RTX 5080 is aimed at buyers who want more 4K headroom, particularly if they also play demanding ray-traced games. None of these recommendations guarantees 4K/120; the result depends on the API, settings, scene, CPU, and whether upscaling is enabled.

RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti?

For an RDR2-focused build, start with the RX 9070 XT if you want strong native rasterized performance and 16GB of VRAM. Pick the RTX 5070 Ti when its features are worth the price difference for your broader use: DLSS, CUDA applications, creator tools, or other games where Nvidia’s ecosystem matters. If the cards are similarly priced, that wider use can make the Nvidia option more compelling; if the RX 9070 XT is meaningfully cheaper and native performance is your priority, favor AMD.

As of August 16, 2026, reporting placed the RX 9070 XT around $719.99 to $759 in the US, above its $599 launch MSRP. Tom’s Hardware listed the RTX 5080 at about $999 median street price. These are dated price observations, not live quotes; check current stock and pricing before buying. Sources: PC Gamer price watch and Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy.

DLSS, native rendering, and what the game supports

Red Dead Redemption 2 received official DLSS support in a July 2021 game update. DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, which can improve performance at the cost of rendering natively at the display resolution. Nvidia reported gains of up to 45% at 4K under its own test conditions; that is not a guarantee for every system or settings combination. Its earlier game-specific testing said DLSS could deliver more than 60 FPS at 1440p on an RTX 3060 Ti or faster under its test conditions. Read Nvidia’s DLSS update and test details.

  • At 1440p or 4K, try DLSS Quality first if you need extra performance and prefer a modest internal-resolution reduction.
  • Compare cards at native resolution when judging raw GPU performance; do not mix native and upscaled results as if they were equivalent tests.
  • Frame generation, where available, creates additional displayed frames; it does not provide the same input responsiveness as rendering an equivalent number of native frames.
  • Official DLSS support in the game does not mean every newer DLSS feature is integrated. Nvidia lists Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction separately, with support varying by GPU and game: Nvidia DLSS feature and compatibility information.

RDR2 is demanding, but it is not a modern path-tracing workload. Do not pay a premium for a card solely on the assumption that the newest ray-tracing or frame-generation feature will transform this game.

Settings that can save performance

The game exposes many graphics controls, and a blanket Ultra preset can spend performance on settings whose visual gains are modest. PC Gamer’s settings analysis notes that 1440p High can be less demanding than 1080p Ultra, illustrating why resolution alone does not describe the workload: PC Gamer’s settings and performance guide.

Keep textures high; reduce expensive effects first

  • Keep texture quality high or Ultra when the card has enough VRAM; lowering textures is not the first response to a frame-rate problem.
  • Reduce volumetric quality and near or far volumetric resolution if performance drops in fog, smoke, or atmospheric scenes.
  • Lower water physics quality, reflections, and tree tessellation before making broad image-quality cuts.
  • Trim grass and tree level of detail, lighting, or shadow quality if you still need more headroom.
  • Be cautious with MSAA and resolution scale: both can impose substantial rendering costs.

Use the same settings profile when comparing cards. An optimized High/Ultra mix can be a better experience than maxing every option, especially when the alternative is unstable frame pacing.

VRAM: useful headroom, not a speed rating

Eight gigabytes can be acceptable for 1080p, but it is less attractive for a new long-term purchase. Twelve gigabytes is generally workable for 1440p; 16GB is a preferable target for a new 1440p or 4K card, especially if you keep high textures or use mods. Twenty gigabytes or more may help with longevity, high-resolution texture packs, and other games, but capacity by itself does not make a GPU faster.

AMD lists both 8GB and 16GB versions of the RX 9060 XT in its Radeon product range; check the exact model before purchase. For the RX 9070 family’s capacity and other specifications, consult AMD’s specifications. The game can run on cards with less than 16GB; that amount is a purchase preference for headroom, not a minimum requirement.

Vulkan versus DirectX 12 affects comparisons

RDR2 lets players choose between Vulkan and DirectX 12, and performance can differ by API, driver, and GPU. Tom’s Hardware’s hierarchy tests the game using Vulkan, while AMD’s published comparison material includes RDR2 under DX12. A result from one API should not be presented as universal performance for the other.

If you benchmark or troubleshoot, change only the API while keeping the other conditions fixed. The built-in benchmark is useful for repeatable comparisons, but its scenes do not represent every moment of play: dense towns, forests, storms, and horseback travel can have different frame-time behavior.

How to compare performance fairly

  1. Update the game and GPU driver, then note the CPU, GPU, driver version, and resolution.
  2. Choose Vulkan or DirectX 12 and keep it fixed for every card in the comparison.
  3. Use the same preset and individual settings, including texture quality, MSAA, and resolution scale.
  4. Record whether rendering is native or upscaled, and specify the DLSS mode if used.
  5. Run the same built-in benchmark pass under the same conditions; test additional gameplay scenes if possible.
  6. Compare average FPS alongside 1% lows or frame-time consistency rather than relying on a single average.

This process will not eliminate differences between systems or scenes, but it avoids treating unlike results as a direct GPU comparison.

Should you upgrade an older GPU?

An RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, RX 6700 XT, RX 6800, RTX 4070, or similar card can still make RDR2 enjoyable. A newer model name alone is not a reason to replace a working GPU. Upgrade when your current card cannot meet your actual resolution and frame-rate target, forces settings compromises you dislike, or struggles with high settings and shows memory-related stutter. Moving to a 4K monitor is also a stronger reason to reassess than simply wanting a newer generation.

At 1080p, check for a CPU limit before buying a faster card: if lowering graphics settings does not raise frame rate, or GPU utilization remains well below full load, the processor or a particular scene may be the constraint. At 1440p and 4K, the GPU is more likely to limit performance, although the CPU still matters for smooth frame delivery.

Check fit, power, and the rest of the system

  • Confirm the power supply’s wattage, quality, and the connectors required by the exact card. Follow the card maker’s guidance on separate PCIe cables rather than a daisy-chained cable where recommended.
  • Check case length, thickness, airflow, and available slots against the partner card’s dimensions.
  • Verify the card has the display outputs needed by your monitor and supports its resolution and refresh rate.
  • Account for partner-card specifications: cooler, size, connector arrangement, and power requirements can differ from reference specifications.
  • Balance the GPU with the CPU, particularly for 1080p high-refresh gaming.

Buying decision by priority

  • Choose the RX 9070 XT for a strong native 1440p/4K-oriented card when its current price is clearly below premium alternatives.
  • Choose the RTX 5070 Ti if DLSS, CUDA, Nvidia creator tools, or broader Nvidia support matter enough to justify its price.
  • Choose the RX 9070 for mainstream 1440p if it is priced sensibly; compare it with the RTX 5070 based on native performance, VRAM, and software needs. Tom’s Hardware’s comparison finds the RX 9070 broadly competitive in rasterization: RTX 5070 versus RX 9070.
  • Choose the RTX 5080 for a premium 4K system or broader high-end gaming, not simply because it is the most expensive option.
  • Choose a 16GB RTX 5060 Ti or RX 9060 XT for budget-conscious 1080p or moderate 1440p, provided the price and performance match your target.

Rockstar’s official PC requirements are a baseline, not a promise of modern high-resolution performance: the minimum lists a GTX 770 or Radeon R9 280, 8GB of system memory, and 150GB of storage. Check Rockstar’s PC requirements and support hub for current requirements and troubleshooting. Laptop GPU names are not directly comparable with desktop names because laptop power limits can substantially change performance.
